I watched the highlight reel and was delighted to hear incidental music that Chad has sampled for some projects. Almost an Easter egg!

the NEXT episode isn't very good? the NEXT? The NEXT

His little move at like 5:10 is something good god

I love these Manimal recaps. It's fun to hear you guys having so much fun. I watched the show in its original run, I would watch so much crap back then so long as it had enough of a geeky premise. I did not watch Nightman-- I could smell the cheese on that one a mile away. But you must cover the Manimal/Nightman episode! I watched a YouTube video to learn a bit more about the show, and it has full of some really notable actors, like Patrick Macnee from The Avengers! I need to know if Manimal drops any more new transformations like the bull in that last ep. https://youtu.be/cA6-xy4396A

I don’t know if this has been suggested before, but after Manimal you lads should try an episode of the notorious Animorphs live action series. In case you don’t know, Animorphs is a sci-fi teen series about a group of ordinary kids given the ability to transform into animals by a dying alien. He tells them their planet is under secret invasion by brain-controlling slugs called Yeerks, and together they have to face the trauma of war and espionage to try and fight back. The books are genuinely great works (most of them) examining real traumas of war and the ethical choices involved. They are often dark, quite funny, and actually pretty good scifi on the whole. The show is almost none of those. Made on a budget absolutely incapable of the books’ ambition the resulting show is awkward and hilarious. I would love to know what you two who presumably haven’t read the books might think of it. And I wouldn’t worry too much about offending the Animorphs fan base either. The series has been mocked by almost everyone including the writers of the series itself! Even if you only cover a single episode I’d love to hear your perspective on it as Manimal Diehards, and hey if you ever want to see the Manimal premise treated with a frankly impressive sincerity and gravity I would actually recommend the books. They’re written for kids and it shows, but the series has a depth that has kept the fan base returning to it for years.

I managed to live though the 80s (I was 23 in 1983) without ever hearing of or watching Manimal. Thank you(?)

I have never seen an episode of Manimal. But as a child, somehow all of my best friends would be playing army or something and someone would just scream "MANIMAL" and then they were a beast man? No idea how we all just did it, but it was fun. I have loved the coverage you gents have given. One more time!

Erik Gordon

Holy moly! I just watched the clips on YouTube. Thanks for the reminder I need to practice my karate in my basement where no one can see me. Chef's kiss to you

Chad, every 10-year-old has nunchuk fever

Sweatin' to the Great Oldies

I want to say this episode reminded me of The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. I really want to say that. My lord I wish I could say that. An incompetent fella trains in order to protect the innocent. They have that in common. So Manimal is sort of like . . . no . . . it isn't. It just isn't. Some day. Some day I will play the lottery. And win the lottery. And spend that money on Manimal remakes with the finest special effects, acting, fight choreography, and set design money can buy. And I will not change one word of the script.

Just an FYI, the download is being tagged as 23_05_30, not 23_06_30.

Manimal again. Cover Bay Watch Nights Season 2, damn it!

There are legit martial arts based on animals - one of the jokes in the Kung Fu Panda movies (starring James Hong as a duck!) is that all the martial arts masters are built around actual animal themed styles - but J.C.'s little story is absolute nonsense. As you would expect. I have vague memories of this episode, at least of the monkey style Kung Fu that made me laugh even as a child, but watching those clips very little looked familiar. Also, my god, but J.C. is a smug asshole.

I put this on in the car on a road trip. My wife looked at me and asked “what on earth is this? This is chaos!” So thank you for that. Then later I showed her the highlight reel. Date night done right!

As a former teenager who owned nunchuks, I feel compelled to mention my strong belief that they are far more dangerous to the user than to any opponent. If I had a dollar for every teen (myself included) who hit themselves in the genitals with their nunchuks, I'd be able to pay for a Manimal reboot.

Jason Rainbird

Inspired by ideas for a Manimal reboot, who would you all cast? I would love to see Matt Berry as JC. Ba-a-at!

All this time, I had no idea that one of my favourite BGMs you guys use is a remix of the Manimal score! Just makes me love it even more. Seriously, I fucking love this Podcast.

It's a Ghost.

I loved Rescue from Gilligan's Island growing up! I had it on VHS and watched it many times. It's currently available to watch on YouTube as well as readily available on both DVD and Blu-Ray. So, I think Leslie H. Martinson probably did a good job directing it. On the other hand, The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island sounds like it would be a great, wacky idea, but I remember not liking it nearly as much as a kid. Which is weird because the idea of the Globetrotters playing a game of basketball on Gilligan's Island against a team of basketball-playing robots owned by Martin Landau sounds like it would be pretty rad…Also, I don't see anywhere where you can readily watch the movie today. I really wonder how I managed to watch it in the mid-90s, unless some cable channel just happened to air it. Also, here's a link to the time the cast of Gilligan's Island faced off against the cast of Batman (including Vincent Price!) on the Family Feud. It's great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NX6yqCTRO4

All I can write is “holy cow!” about this episode.

This episode has one thing in common with classic kung fu movies: the ethical problem that kung fu is supposed to be a noble, virtuous spiritual practice, but in order for the plot to work 90% of kung fu guys have to be evil assholes hellbent on murdering the hero..

Eric S. Vallone, M.D.

I have never watched “Manimal” but I am wondering if the “bull scene” is really a play on “bull in a china shop” as you mentioned, or rather, given the 1983 setting, a reference to the “Don’t say beer. Say BULL!” Schlitz Malt Liquor commercials.

Karlandos

Watching the footage provided for the show made me cringe but also reminded me why Kung-Fu movies are awesome for their unbridled melodrama and over the top action, some being executed better than others. That said, I could totally see the idea of JC being a Kung Fu fighting animal shifter who learned the ancient power while training. That said, if you guys ever decide to step your toes into classic Kung Fu movies, Having looked up the actors in Big Trouble in Little China I was pleasently reminded they worked alongside Carter Wong who was a prominent member of the Venom Mob who were a group that did a bunch of movies together, a big name one you might be familiar with being 5 Deadly Venoms which I highly suggest watching. That said, the late 70s early 80s were a boon for Kung Fu cinema and I only regret not being around when you could go to the movies on the weekends to see them and experience them that way.

Adequately Excellent Entertainment

I’m legit hyped for the Nightman crossover. I never watched Manim but I remember watching Nightman and laughing so much.

Jeremy Impson

Oh, the sweet freedom from Manimal was in our sight,! Alas, they've found an excuse for one more again, and I fear they will continue to find excuses to torture us! (Just kidding, I love it! Maybe there's a novelization you could cover?)

Jim Kruk

YES! I'm having a Manimalism right now!

Kuria

hearing some music from the show pop up in the Manimal clip...😂😂😂

MonsterTalk

You know it's a real shame MacCorkindale has passed away. ( Aaron Eckhart could always pick up the mantle and nobody would notice the difference.) I got to thinking that given when this show took place there was this golden opportunity for a Manimal/Beastmaster crossover. Would Dar be able to control Jonathan Chase? Or his beast forms? Would this turn into slash-fic? They left money on the table, z'all I'm sayin'.

James Anthony

You've probably already covered it, but Night Man was a special interest of mine as a kid. Absolutely loved the car, though I've since heard the Prowler had about as much horsepower as a horse and buggy

ChiveOnOCM

Still waiting on that cross over episode coverage.
