Being a dad to a couple of toddlers, I had a rough time with some of these episodes (same with Child’s Play). I’ve learned to steer clear of the true crime genre largely because it may now deeply trouble me. Unrelated to that, I’d like to suggest “A True Story,” by Lucian of Samasota. I first encountered this proto-sci-fi tale in a first-level Classical Greek course. It’s a satire of popular travel literature (spoiler alert: it’s not actually a true story), that details the war between the insect-riding denizens of the moon and sun. The protagonist, sadly, doesn’t get to the moon via cats.

Wow, I’m hurt that Chris didn’t believe me about Mignola’s name pronunciation…why, I bet you wouldn’t believe I’m in a Facebook group with Alan Moore either, huh? And that he actually LOVES Snyder’s watchmen movie but he has to pretend to hate it in public so nobody thinks he’s a poser? Wow, you think you know a podcaster..

I also assumed the children in the Penance were killing the chickens, but the small cast of characters in Saki’s super short stories are often going to imply that kind of subtext. The stories are framed so narrowly that you only have a few details on which to build theories.

If you ever decide to revisit the evil child short story category, I'd like to recommend Jane Rice’s “The Idol of the Flies.” I read it probably fifty years ago and still remember it to this day. Thanks.

Speaking of creepy kids: Have you guys considered creating a Witch House Media / Strange Studies Discord Server? The comments section is good, but i think a Discord Server would be a great addition for subscribers

If a truly chilling Jack the Ripper story is what you’re after, I can recommend God of the Razor by Joe R. Lansdale. It could make good fodder for a Strange Studies episode, especially if you guys (Chad and Chris) want to consider more stories from living writers (now that the seal has been broken). The story was published in 1987 and is available to read for free on Nightmare.com, for those who might be interested.

*Inserts comment about how amazing Chris’s son’s reading was, due to feeling guilt for not giving him a compliment the first time*
