K-Pop Demon Hunters X Danny PhantomChapter 01: Comeback2016Lunch Period, Casper HighZoey sat on the stairwell just outside the cafeteria, headphones on, nodding to the rhythm that pulsed through her. Her pen moved fast across her notebook, her hand keeping time with the beat in her ears. Every few seconds, she muttered a few bars under her breath, scratching out a word here, circling a line there. Her brow furrowed in thought, then relaxed when the rhyme finally landed right.Someone dropped down beside her with a faint clatter of wheels. She didn’t need to look. She knew the sound of that skateboard and the quiet way he waited for her to finish her verse.Zoey wrapped up the last line, underlined it once, then pulled her headphones down to rest around her neck.A tap landed on her shoulder. She tilted her head and smirked. “Five minutes?”Danny nodded, backpack slung loose over one shoulder. “Five minutes till next period.”“Thanks,” she said, flipping her notebook closed halfway. She glanced around. “Where are Tucker and Sam?”Danny rolled his eyes. “Still in the cafeteria. Last I saw, they were arguing over the movie we’re planning to see next week.”Zoey snorted. “Let me guess. Sam’s going for the latest horror flick?”“Pretty much.” Danny leaned a bit, eyes flicking to the lyrics still visible on the page. “How’s the songwriting going?”“It’s going,” Zoey murmured, then adjusted the headphones around her neck. “I’ve been looping one of my favorite albums from when I was little. Helps me focus.”She reached into her backpack and pulled out a well-worn CD case, handing it to him.Danny read the title aloud. “Sunlight Sisters?”“They’re an older Korean pop group,” she said. “But there was something about their music that made me feel… I don’t know. Liberated. Like I didn’t have to bottle everything up.”Danny chuckled. “Really? Sometimes I feel that you’re like that with me already.”Zoey rubbed the back of her neck. “You’ve never complained when I go off on a tangent.”“I don’t. Makes the conversations more interesting.” He flipped the case over to look at the track list. “Still, didn’t expect you to be into older pop.”Zoey shrugged. “Oh, their harmonies were beautiful. I can send you the link later if you want.”“Yeah, maybe I’ll give it a listen one of these days,” Danny said, surprised by her enthusiasm. She smiled faintly, but her voice softened. “It’s just too bad about one of the singers.”“What happened?”“One of them had a baby, but she passed away not long after,” Zoey said. “It was really sweet of Celine, their lead singer, to adopt her. They were best friends.”“Must’ve been close,” Danny said.Zoey nodded, tucking the case back into her bag. “They didn’t talk much about it in interviews.”“Makes sense. It’s personal stuff at that point.” He jerked a thumb at the notebook. “Mind if I…”Zoey handed it over without hesitation. “Sure.”Danny cleared his throat in a theatrical way and read aloud, quick and sharp:“Okay, I know I ramble,But when shootin’ my words, I go Rambo!Took blood and tears to look natural,That’s how it’s done, done, done!”He looked up. “Sounds good so far.”Zoey leaned back against the wall, arms resting on her knees. “Are you sure you’re not just being nice?”“Zoe… I really think you’ve got something here.”She looked away, quiet for a second. “Thanks, Danny. I’m sorry. You know how I get. It’s hard finding people who’ll actually listen to what’s rattling around in my head.”Danny grinned and nudged her arm with his elbow. “And ever since grade school, I’ve been looking for someone who wanted to talk to me despite my parents.”Zoey exhaled through her nose. “Sometimes I feel like all this,” she gestured to the notebook, “my thoughts, my lyrics... It’s just noise. Weird noise.”Danny handed the notebook back. “Zoe, I’m the kid with ghost-hunting parents. Pretty sure wanting to be a singer is one of the more normal things around here.”She snorted. “I guess you’ve got a point. Still trying to be an astronaut, right?”“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “Hoping to take astronomy next year.”“I’m hoping the music course here will help me out, too,” she said. Then her voice dipped. “There’s this musical showcase I want to go to next month, but… I’ll be in Korea with my mom.”Danny winced. “Next month? Man, that sucks. She can’t reschedule?”“It’s not her fault,” Zoey added quickly. “The trip’s been planned for a while between my parents. I only found out about the showcase last week.”He nodded. “You've been bouncing back and forth for a while now.”“Yeah. Just trying to spend time with both my parents is already eating up what little social life I actually have.”“At least we still get to video chat.”“Yeah, but it’s not the same after a while.”Danny rested his arms on his knees. “Too bad I can’t visit South Korea with you. The way you talk about it, it sounds pretty awesome.”“Maybe one day,” Zoey said. “I’ll show you around. All the food, the markets, the rooftop cafes… you'd love it.”She hesitated, then glanced at him. “Actually… can I ask you something?”Danny raised an eyebrow. “Sure.”“I’ve been thinking,” she said, brushing a stray braid from her face. “I need someone to practice with. Just, like, help me run lyrics out loud. Try out cadences. Doesn’t have to be serious. Just someone who won’t make it awkward.”Danny looked uncertain. “Me?”“Yeah, you,” she said, nudging him. “You’re already honest with me, and you’ve got rhythm. I’ve seen you tap along to music in class.”“That’s not the same as rapping.”“I’m not asking you to rap battle against me,” Zoey said. “Just… try. Even if it’s bad, who cares? It’d mean a lot.”Danny looked like he was weighing it. “I don’t know…”Zoey tilted her head at him. “C’mon, you still owe me. Or did you forget who helped sneak you out for that planetarium opening last semester?”Danny groaned. “You’re never letting that go, are you?”“Nope.”He laughed under his breath, defeated. “Alright. I’ll give it a shot. No promises.”“That’s all I wanted,” she said, smiling. “Just knowing you’d be willing to share something like that with me… It’s nice.”Danny coughed into his hand at her cute expression. “Would be a nice break from all the ghost stuff back home. My parents are still buried in that experiment I told you about.”Zoey tilted her head. “The one they tried back in college? The Ghost Portal?”“Yeah. Same one. They’re still chasing it.”She smiled faintly, gaze drifting. “Back in Korea, my grandmother used to tell me stories when I couldn’t sleep. Especially after nightmares. She’d say demons have always haunted our world, sneaking through shadows to steal people’s souls. Feeding them to their Demon King for power.”Danny blinked. “That’s… intense bedtime material.”Zoey laughed softly. “It gets better. She’d say heroes rose to protect us. Not just with swords or brute strength, but with music. Voices strong enough to drive the darkness back. Songs full of courage and hope. The first Hunters were singers, warriors who used music to connect hearts. That connection, that harmony, created a shield to protect our world from the Demon Realm.”She glanced down at her notebook, fingers brushing the edge of a page. “And every time she finished the story, she’d hum this old lullaby. It always helped me sleep.”Danny leaned back and chuckled. “Maybe that’s why my parents haven’t found any ghosts yet. That music-barrier-thing is still up.”Zoey shrugged. “That’s how the stories go over there. I didn’t grow up with Western myths. Most of what I know about ghosts and demons from here is just TV shows and cartoons.”“My mom calls ghosts ‘odd manifestations of ectoplasmic energy and post-human consciousness,’” Danny said, using air quotes. “But… you know. Take that with the obvious salt. My parents say that all ghosts are evil, so that’s one thing the stories have in common. The bell rang sharply overhead.Danny stood and slung his bag over both shoulders. “Biology calls.”Zoey grabbed her board and tucked the notebook away. “Alright. Let’s go.”The two walked off side by side to class in the mass of students.2017The sun had started to dip, streaking the sky in orange and lavender as Danny and Zoey walked side by side, their skateboards tucked under their arms. Tucker and Sam had split off a few blocks back, leaving the two of them to wind down from their afternoon at the skatepark. They stepped off the path and found an empty bench tucked under an old tree.Zoey sat first, brushing off a few leaves before settling in. Danny followed, stretching out his legs with a soft sigh. Neither spoke for a moment..Then Zoey pulled her phone from her pocket and looked at it, fidgeting with the corner of the case.“Hey,” she said quietly, not looking at him. “I’ve got something to tell you.”Danny glanced over. “What’s up?”She hesitated, thumb tapping against the screen even though it was off. “A music agency reached out to my grandmother. They want me to audition… for a training program.”His eyebrows rose. “Whoa. That’s huge, Zoe! That’s amazing. I mean, this is what you’ve been working for, right?”Zoey gave a small nod, but her smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Yeah. It is. I’m really happy. But... there’s more.”Danny shifted, his expression starting to tense.“The program’s in South Korea,” she said. “And... I’ll be moving there full-time with my mom.”Danny’s face fell. “Oh. That’s... when do you leave?”She looked down. “End of the month. Even if the audition doesn’t work out, my parents have already decided. The move’s happening either way.”Danny nodded slowly, but the motion looked mechanical. He tried to smile, but it wavered. “I… I’m gonna miss you.”Zoey’s voice cracked a little. “Oh, me too, Danny. I don’t think I would’ve made it this far without you.”She reached over and pulled him into a hug, arms tight around his shoulders. Danny hugged her back, his chin resting lightly on her shoulder. They stayed like that for a long moment before Zoey pulled back just enough to look him in the eyes. “Promise we’ll call each other at least once a week, deal?”Danny gave a genuine, if small, smile. “Deal.”7 Years Later2024The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. Rumi stepped out first, hoodie pulled low over her eyes. Mira followed, tugging at the strap of her duffel bag. Zoey lingered at the back, earbuds still in, scrolling through messages she’d ignored mid-flight.They reached the apartment door at the end of the hall. The security panel lit up the moment Rumi pressed her thumb to it. A soft click followed, and the lock disengaged.Inside, the lights came on automatically. Marble floors stretched across the open-plan living room, with an L-shaped couch positioned by the windows. The Seoul skyline shone beyond the glass.Zoey dumped her bag and walked straight to the kitchen. Mira kicked off her shoes and collapsed onto the couch, legs sprawled like she hadn’t slept in days. “It still smells like eucalyptus,” Mira muttered, eyes half closed.“Thank the cleaners,” Zoey called from behind the fridge door. “Otherwise, we’d still be finding months-old ramen cups under the couch.”Rumi dropped onto the other end of the sofa, head tipping back against the cushion.A rare silence followed, warm and earned. Mira let out a breath.“Another tour in the bag,” she said.“Yeah,” Zoey replied, walking in with a drink. “And fewer… complications this time.”Rumi raised an eyebrow. “Don’t jinx it.”They shared a tired laugh, one that came more from the relief of being home than anything else. Then Zoey’s phone buzzed on the table. She perked up immediately and grabbed it. “It’s that time.”Mira rolled onto her side. “Tell Danny to hurry and visit for once.”Zoey smirked. “It's on the list.”Rumi gave a small wave as Zoey slipped into her room and shut the door. Her weekly call with Danny had become a ritual, one she never missed, no matter what country they were in. Mira and Rumi knew who he was, of course. He’d even chatted with them a few times, but the details of their other lives stayed off the table.Zoey flopped onto her bed and picked up the call. “Hey, stranger.”“Hey, international pop star,” Danny said. “Just got back?”“Like, an hour ago. I think my ears are still ringing from the jet.”"Celebrity problems," He laughed. “Good timing then. I’ve got something to tell you.”Zoey sat up, brushing her bangs from her face. “What’s up?”“Jazz is heading to Korea next month. A major psychology conference, focusing on mental health and youth trauma. She got invited to present and everything.”Zoey raised an eyebrow. “Sounds impressive.”“Yeah, she’s been prepping nonstop. Anyway, she told me I could come with her. So I was wondering… since Huntrix’s tour is over... maybe we could finally meet up?”Zoey’s eyes lit up. She bounced once on the mattress. “Yes! Danny, yes! We’re off for the next three months. I can’t believe you’re actually coming!”Danny laughed. “I mean, assuming you’re not too busy being famous.”“I’ll make time,” she said, grinning. “We’ve got so much to catch up on. Seriously. This made my whole week.”“One month,” Danny said. “I’m already counting down.”“Same here,” Zoey said softly. “I’ve missed you, Danny.”“Me too, Zoe. Can’t wait.”
