Hey y’all! A little update and request for you to weigh in.

The Bye Sister Part 4 finale retrospective is on a brief delay right now as Kat is fully occupied at her… real job. And it would be pointless to do without her.

While we wait on that, I was thinking that this month, we could do a sort of mini-tangent-palooza: a sort of edited sample platter where I provide brief (ish?) coverage of a variety of topics at your request in a single bonus episode. A charcuterie board of politics, culture, and the internet.

Please comment on this post any topic, question, culture clash, political query, or niche internet drama that you’d like to be considered for a mini-dive! I’m excited.

How RuPaul’s Drag Race shaped queer culture and, over time, made itself more and more palatable to straight people

Sarah

I'd love for you to weigh in on fast fashion/overconsumption and the new wave of "underconsumptioncore"

Liz

elon musk, specifically the history of the twitter saga

Cayleb Stives

tangentially related to Bye Sister, I would love if someone talked about Shane Dawson as it pertained to that weirdly racist era of YouTube

Liz

although that could be its own full episode lol

Alec Berg

the history of queer people and parasocial internet relationships

Ash Carson Green

I guess maybe how the US electoral system works? 🙈🙈 Lots of us non-US people (and probably lots of US people too lol) don't understand it cause it's so fucking dumb

Lindsey

could you just talk to me about jennifer coolidge for 20 minutes

Tito Mercado
>>151599337

I would definitely love another contra/matt crossover, and she does understand the repercussions and implications of gamergate pretty well... So something like that or like... The Falwell scandal 💅🏳️‍🌈🔥

Hannah

On the theme of YouTubers, I'd love to hear you talk about Trisha Paytas and her many reinventions over the years

Gigi

This might be a weird one. But I would love someone to talk about third parties. Why we extreme leftist like us stand for what we stand for but we still want to vote for kamala who is in love with genocide. The role social media plays into it, the narrative that plagues us. I dunno. I'm bad at words

Peeb

Third party voting 😬😬😬 is that too controversial

Jamie

The cover ups of bad celeb behavior (CultureWork on TikTok has a HORRIFYING playlist about Chris Rock mob level harassment history that should be career ending, Diddy, etc.)

Christian Scholer

What is a current topic you're truly obsessed with? I love when people rant about their passions.

Lambda Sitta

I would love an update on various celebrities who were quick to sign the IsNOTreal petitions and support letters, and had little negative impact on their careers versus the pro-Palestine celebrities that lost contracts, roles, etc.

tiger

seconding the drag race one; would love to hear your take on the evolution of the show and how it’s changed to fit into the mainstream

L E L L Y B E L L Y

Idk if you’ve talked about this (and it might also not be ur thing 😅) but I’d love to hear you talk about kpop being introduced into western music spheres. Groups being gives music awards, attending western award shows, etc. because I think there’s a lot of underlying themes that really need to explored! There’s a lot of discourse about it inside the kpop community itself, but there’s a lot of it in western culture about keeping groups out. I’ve seen a lot of people say that the groups aren’t popular enough to attend (stray kids and BTS are great places to start for that kind of stuff lol). Anyway, whatever you do, I’ll be sure to listen 💖

The early 2000s child/teen celebrity purity ring trend and its implications

i know you already talked about her recently, but i feel like chappell roan has been getting woman'd even harder just within the past few weeks because of her political stance clarification vids and then her subsequent show cancellations 🤔 i kinda just like hearing you talk about maligned women tho lolol matt bernstein 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼 sarah marshall (you're wrong about, you are good podcast fame): fixating on maligned women

I mean I know u aren't my therapist BUT I wouldn't say no if you were going to do a dive into the thinking behind how and why 'supportive' family members use so many damaging microaggressions and can't seem to do the work to accept/learn why that behaviour is horrible

Ketra Elizabeth

i’d love a dive into amberlynn reid in the past couple months. so niche and irrelevant but it would tickle me.

Libby Forsmark

How AIDS has had a devastating impact on marginalized communities beyond even the gay community bc no one acknowledged it - thinking specifically about drug users and also kids (specifically BIPOC kids) born with AIDS and so many living their whole lives in hospitals

Karayah Whiseheart

-Phenomenon of movie studios trying hide their film is a musical in trailers & promotion -Liberal white women who have fallen in platonic love with Tim Walz because he represents the dad they lost to Fox News -Since the news about P. Diddy broke, the guilt by association people have assigned to different *cough cough* Black *cough* celebrities & also on the flip side, people trying to rehab Kanye because of it -Kamala’s promise to make America the most lethal military in the world 🫠 -advice you’d give to queer content creators who wrestle with mental health, especially with the hate machine online -Hurricane Helene & the rampant misinformation and/or how capitalism is the biggest driving force of climate change yet refusing to do anything to stop it is unbelievably expensive (the years it’ll take to rebuild the damage Hurricane Helene has done) -Democrats removing abolishing the death penalty from their platform as innocent men like Marcellus Williams are killed

i was about to say this! like kpop has a lot of issues, just as any industry, but theres so much racism in europe and the us in regards to kpop and viewing it as legit music. and its just starting to get interesting as more and more kpop artists feature with eg. US artists, aaand theres an interesting thing going on with kpop and latin pop artists! I'm talking ateez here for example. plus, a lot of kpop groups, especially the ones that self produce, have never shied away from tackling social issues in their music! id say def bts, stray kids, also gidle (their whole new ep about the position of women in society, chefs kiss) and mamamoo, would be good starting points for that

Tawnya

I would love this!! You always have such great insight!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how celebrities are worshipped and idolized, so we tend to push them towards speaking on their political/ethical beliefs publicly. So we can label them as “good” or “bad” or cancelled in our collective opinion. And they’re damned if they do and damned if they don’t … because flip side of the same coin: why do we feel mega famous celebs like Taylor Swift or Chappell Roan need to express their political ideologies if they’re supposedly NOT supposed to be idolized in the first place? Why should I care if an ultra rich celebrity aligns with my political beliefs when I know they’re out of touch BECAUSE they’re rich?? (disclaimer: I personally understand the benefit of someone with a large following speaking on world issues) Would love if you expressed more in depth your thoughts Matt! <3 Am I making sense??

Elizabeth
>>151599587

Yes! And what are the possible paths to ending the electoral college and having a popular vote. Like how legally could that work?

Elizabeth

Would love your thoughts on Drag Race too. Also maybe explore a bit on why some of us queers don't see assimilation as a goal? Also since the elections are super close (and I can't be the only one barely stomaching tbe national race) highlight some down ballot races, propositions, etc that people can get actually excited about and involved in?

Anjali

The current state of the music industry, like who's making money and how!

>>151600108

I would love to dive deeper into the hate campaign against Chappell, but also how many liberals with “LGBTQ+ ally” in their bios have used it as an excuse to harass queer people online defending her. Like how thousands of queer women thought the SNL skit was mocking her. While we now know it wasn’t Bowen’s intention, the harassment towards queer women who were upset by it was wild.

Avery

This is a huge topic, but I would love to hear you devote even just a few minutes to it, if not a whole episode! ❤️ Sex worker here 👋🏼 At this point I think many queers know that we owe a *lot* of our rights and progress to the BIPOC, sex working, transgender women who spearheaded gay rights movements. While various issues plaguing queers, trans people and BIPOC folks are at the forefront of a lot of conversations right now, there’s very little focus on what sex workers specifically are facing in today’s political climate. It would literally be a dream come true if you collaborated with SW activist Pomma (@onlypomma on IG) and used your incredible platform to educate people about what sex workers are going through. I would cry happy tears for days! Issues like de-platforming, how the upcoming election may affect our jobs, FOSTA/SESTA, how SW is often conflated with trafficking, our desire for total decriminalization instead of legalization (or any form of criminalization, including the Nordic model), how the stigma surrounding SW actually hurts victims of trafficking, how sex workers are never at the forefront of conversations that affect us… etc. etc. If you couldn’t collaborate with a SW’er for whatever reason (which I would highly recommend doing — nothing about us without us!) then I would say do some reading of books by SW’ers to gain an understanding of some issues. The book “Revolting Prostitutes” by Molly Smith and Juno Mac is an amazing resource that touches on some REALLY important stuff worldwide, even though those authors are based out of the UK. The book “Red Light Labour - Sex Work Regulation, Agency and Resistance” is fantastic too. It focuses on Canada, but has so much information of relevance to the lives of SW’s worldwide as well. Sorry for such a long comment! Thanks for reading, Matt! Sending love! ❤️

This would be great as a full public YouTube episode, a true deep dive and commentary. I think a lot of people would want to watch that

Joanne Griffin

Eric Adams! Maybe invite Michael Hobbs and discuss the damage that gay white men do to the queer community Lebanon and the Palestinian fight for liberation Your experience of parasocial relationships

Jessica Daylover

I’m a queer, leftist, polyamorous mom and influencer who critiques and satirizes the nuclear family. I just launched an app to help folks create modern villages and chosen families, and @libsoftiktok and the right are super fucking triggered about it 🙄 Libsoftiktok shared one of my videos (and Matt Walsh has made 2 videos about me) and a few weeks later I was doxxed and had CPS called on me with absolutely horrific (and ridiculous) claims. The entire thing was so fucked up. I actually didn’t realize it was a libsoftiktok follower until I listened to your episode about how that’s what happens after they post about you! Anyway, the hellscape of the nuclear family is my autistic special interest and I’d LOVE to hear you dig into it! It triggers everyone, tho, not just the alt right 😒 Ps fuck Libsoftiktok and Matt Walsh ✌🏼

Nickie Bro
>>151600108

Yes!! I totally agree, especially liberals using the excuse that she "wasn't being clear" about her stances, as though her being a proud lesbian and a proponent of the trans community doesn't make it obvious where she stands 🙄 but you're totally right, i think that convo is a great place to jump into the larger topic of the harassment of queer women in general, because ik the girlies are getting dismissed as just uber fanatics worshipping chappell's every move, when it's like... no, we're just trying to point out how unfair it is to put all these high expectations on celebrities, but ESPECIALLY a gay woman who is still a newborn baby celeb walking on wobbly legs just trying to adjust to this newfound super stardom

Nickie Bro
>>151608187

Ohhhh I'm waiting for the Michael Hobbes x Matt Bernstein crossover episode like no tomorrow 👀👀👀

lauren

i would love to hear about being excited for queer media and the representation it brings vs the fetishization of it. not necessarily fetishization in a sexual way but more so in how/why people are so obsessed/invested in queer media and people that it feels disrespectful in a way. for example, heartstopper, i love the show so much and i don’t see anything wrong or fetishizing about the show itself, but something rubs me the wrong way about the intensity of peoples reactions/audience reactions or reasons for watching. also would love to hear about multicultural heteronormativity and the intersections that gender, race, and class play in our identities. maybe just on intersectionality in general especially in activism. idk i feel like there’s a lot to be explored there it could potentially be a whole episode lmao

>>151609127

Totally agree with the theme about queer media representation (Ie. Queer media for queer people) vs queer media "wish sublimation" (Ie. Queer media for straight people). I know Lucy Neville wrote a book about this but I think there's more to likely unpack particularly contrasting how queer stories are told and the distinct meta narratives actually make queer people feel seen vs those that placate straight people.

Erica

I’ve recently been really annoyed by make up (and other) trends that seem to just be about putting women down and/or conformity and a very specific set of beauty standards. Specifically the “make up blindness” trend is one that I got a bad feeling about from the first time I heard about it.

Please don't forget many of subscribers are not American and most of these are very American and related only to your country. That being said I'm sure these are important themes and ofc sometimes only America will be the topic, but if it's a mix of topics video please include something relevant to non-americans also.

Hi, I recently had a discussion with a queer friend from the older millennial spectrum about Ellen Degeneres and how her "downfall" is a typical example of how the business treats successful (queer) women and how no one would seriously accuse a straight cis male comedian of being "mean" because it's such a shallow, meaningless accusation that would never seriously hurt a cis man's image. My friend was angry that from his perspective Gen Z in particular doesn't understand what it “owes” to some older queer people in public life and puts them down instead of giving them some grace. I would be very interested in your perspective on the topic of how to deal with older icons who are not in tune with the zeitgeist in all nuances and generational differences in general.

would love to hear your take on the divine feminine/divine masculine “trends” and its origins and how it’s just traditional gender roles repackaged also would love to hear your discussion on the politics of gen z - specifically the concerning trend about how gen z cis men are becoming more conservative than their older counterparts

Lucy Newman
>>151602640

This is a great topic, but I personally think Chappell Roan is in a very different category from Taylor Swift here. She’s only recently famous and imo seems to genuinely care about both queer people and Palestine. I think saying she’d vote for Kamala but not endorse here is the best thing she could have done when we have a choice between two evils, one of which is strictly worse, and third parties that have no real hope of winning.

Lucy Newman

Would love to see some content from Matt about Drag Race too, also the parasocial relationship between fans & some queens, plus hatred towards certain queens is getting very out of hand at the mo

Anna

So many great ideas here! This one’s a bit left field - the recent marriage of Norwegian princess Martha Louise to American shaman Durek Verrett who has some very worrying claims about how he thinks he’s able to ‘spiritually cleanse women’, apparently he’s close friends with Ms Paltrow. Märtha Louise ran a psycho-babble type school at one point. Also would love to see you do a collab with QAA Matt 😊🤞

Lucy Newman

What the gym means to you as a queer person. I always think it’s funny when left-leaning people like Naomi Klein in Doppelganger don’t seem to understand why anyone would want to go to the gym other than to perform conventional gender roles, and paint it as a gateway drug to right-wing extremism. I love Naomi Klein and she makes great points about toxic wellness culture, but I feel like there’s another side of the story where there are some of us who work out for our own reasons. I think you’ve mentioned working out in the past so would love to hear you talk about this!

Lucy Newman
>>151608187

On the topic of Eric Adams (there’s a lot) but the recent issue where cops shot a farebeater in Brooklyn, two bystanders, and another cop, and Eric Adams praised the cops for their brave work. More generally, over-policing of the MTA, building a cop city, etc

Lucy Newman

Media bias. The reporting on Israel/Palestine is so bad that a journalist self-immolated his arm. During the Vietnam war, protests happened because local and national papers published accounts of atrocities being committed. Now, it seems they always try to hide it and make it look justified or not as bad. How have we gotten here?

Lucy Newman

The Overton window. Kamala basically picked up Trump’s 2016 immigration policy, which is one of the things that made me and a lot of people I know hate him most in 2016. Now, most of those people are Kamala stans, and Trump wants to use the military to enact mass deportations. The Dems have also dropped other progressive policies like abolition of the death penalty and are now pro-Fracking, with no clear plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And the GOP’s racist and fascist leanings are becoming more and more explicit. Why is this happening and how do we stop it?

Lambda Sitta
>>151631010

THIS, OH MY GOODNESS!!! Everyone in my life is sick of hearing me say how much I hate this stuff. Such a good suggestion!!!

Sara

as someone in nc who has seen a lot of batshit takes from blue state liberals in the last week about how appalachia deserves to sink underwater because they vote red, would love to hear some discussion about the way we talk about the south and the rural poor in general in leftist spaces

Steph

This is definitely niche. But I’m from Massachusetts, and the Karen Read case is such a wild ride. She is a college professor accused of killing her Boston cop boyfriend, and she is currently fighting against the cops and others in the system, saying that this was set up by them and that she was framed. It’s a huge cop cover up story, but what really interests me is that the biggest supporters of Karen are MAGA “back the blue” people, and it’s so weird and confusing. Very interesting deep dive case for anyone who hasn’t heard of it!

I would love a bit about RuPaul and the fracking thing. Or in general about how drag has really taken off in the past few years

please talk about how Rob Anderson is a menace to society and gay pretty privilege

I don't think I saw anyone mention the whole RT secretly funding all those right wing influencers like tim pool, dave rubin etc. Your take on whether it would be weird as a political influencer for someone to suddenly want to give you hundreds of thousands of dollars might be funny lol

Ambró Stoics

I’d love to hear your thoughts about whether or not we can separate the “art from the artist.” I’m thinking specifically about JK Rowling as a millennial who fell in love with the HP books, but I think this also applies to a lot of music, movies, etc. However, her anti-trans rhetoric is abhorrent. LOVE your content!

Please talk about fat politics! I think your reach would really help change people's ideas on this.

Nicky

Seconding; a follow up on the Ozempidemic episode would be great

Nicky
>>151650621

Thirding! This logic doesn't just apply to the U.S., either! I live in "Canadian Texas" (Alberta) and we are frequently told that we deserve natural disasters, abhorrent politics, etc. because of the provincial voting history/gerrymandering that exists here.

Nicky

something that interests me and I'd love a dissection on is the (somewhat recent) portrayal of cops in left-leaning media, and how frequently "good cop" characters are written as oppressed groups to make them more sympathetic (netflix's Eric, amazon prime's Hunters, brooklyn 99, etc.). to me, it furthers the myth of the Good Cop™️, and furthers the idea that all the problems with policing are due to Bad Apples™️.

Steph
>>151654821

Oh, man. I’m still looking for one source that lays it all out, a lot of media reports leave out so much of the crazy courtroom drama. Unfortunately, it all started with “Turtle Boy.” Turtle Boy is a local alt-right news source run by a middle aged man named Aidan Kearney. He is Karen’s number one supporter and has covered this case extensively. You can read more about his involvement here: https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-trial-aidan-kearney-turtleboy-canton-massachusetts/ but definitely take a look at his website just to get a feel for the insanity of it all. Here is the most recent timeline of events, published in late September: https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/karen-read-trial-timeline-john-okeefe/ I also suggest searching her name in TikTok to see all the commentary on this. There’s a big conversation to be had that all these white MAGA people didn’t care about police corruption until it happened to an attractive, well-off white woman. It got so bad that Boston’s infamously conservative newspaper made THIS their cover: https://x.com/DoctorTurtleboy/status/1800865340055773531 This case caused other cases to be opened back up and the entire Canton (that’s the town this took place in) Police Force is under investigation. One of their former officers groomed, had sexual relationships with, impregnated and murdered a girl who was once in his teen police academy class. Her name was Sandra Bichmore, if you’re interested in that case as well.

Francesca Liberatore

JD Vance might be fun/hellish. book banning! more on the way conservatives "protecting" children is actually doing the opposite - controlling/oppressing them.

I’d love to hear your take on the politicization of these massive hurricanes impacting Florida, I only ever use tw*tter to track weather events, and I was mind blown at the volume of people saying these storms are man made and designed intentionally to influence votes, and the amount of people weaponizing these disasters against their political opponents (Ps I hope all my Florida friends are staying safe rn 🫶🏼)

Can we not say leftist spaces tho? Cause these people are not leftist. They are right wing blue Maga fascist neo liberals, they can call themselves whatever they want but doesn’t make them left

Gio O
>>151641271

Matt seems to only focus on boogeyman republicans these days, even tho democrats are the ones in power with the same policies. Picking the lesser of two evils is how both parties keep getting more evil… we need to breakaway from both, if not with a live streamed genocide and bigger and more frequent climate catastrophe, when will we finally have enough and build our own working class political power??

Gio O
>>151602640

I truly don’t understand how people can look at the last four years, even the last one year, and say trump is “strictly” worse. I don’t like him but materially things have never been worse: first ever live streamed genocide, climate catastrophe denial, closer to WW3/nuclear war than we have ever been… “but trump!!!!” Third parties absolutely have a chance if people voted based on what they “say” their values/morals are instead of voting out of fear

couple of different things. tan and bobby had a falling out (which bobby confirmed in his vanity fair article discussing why he was leaving). there was an article published in rolling stone which interviewed production crew, many of whom said that jvn would often scream at people, which he denied. the same article mentioned that tan might have worked to get jeremiah (bobby's replacement) hired. tan did a video responding referring to bobby as his 'former coworker who was fired' which was interesting given that he a) didn't mention bobby's name directly b) said he was fired when everyone said he was leaving. i'm just nosy and want to hear more takes on what happened.

Sara
>>151650621

@Gio, I get where you're coming from and I totally agree that said takes are inconsistent with leftist beliefs, but I don't think it benefits us to just dismiss people acting badly who identify with the same groups or labels as us as not actually part of said identity group. I think it's worth asking why people would believe and confidently say these things while simultaneously claiming to be on the left-- what messages have they received and from where that would cause them to believe that those two actions are ideologically consistent with one another?

red halverson

climate change as it impacts extreme weather is def topical, you could also include some about the price gauging attached to that (like them racking up the prices of flights out of tampa rn)

The parallel between various spheres (culture, social, nutrition, health, beauty) demonizing science and facts and emphasizing on emotions and “save the children” rhetoric. I see a lot of push to try to fight these anti-science facts rhetoric but it’d be nice to spotlight the overarching rhetoric “unifying” these various areas (thinking about AOC being accused of not calling the Palestine a genocide, health panel on nutrition and supplements from a panel of non-experts that’s been covered by Dr Andrea Love amongst others, misinformation about beauty products that labmuffinbeautyscience fact checks).

Artie

Late to this, but I would love a section on fast fashion and how TikTok has influenced young people to engage in fashion microtrends that harm our planet and exploit laborers.

Maya Henry has been speaking out against Liam (her ex-fiance) because he abused her and also was messaging underage fans. She's been getting a lot of hate and vitriol from stans and I think the media discrediting her too.

Matt I just listened to the jubilee episode and now I keep getting recommendations for them on literally every app 😭 low key scary

I’d love to hear your perspective on gamergate since you mentioned it before. It’s the most fascinating absurdity to me

I feel like Cynthia Erivo is an interesting person to talk about, with her weird involvement about the cast of The Great Comet, to the recent Wicked outburst, there’s a bit there to dissect.

I would be interested to hear more discussion kind of like in the pinkwashing episode discussing (your or general) Jewish identity in relation to Palestine. Specifically, I've been thinking a lot recently about how being a Jew these days feels closely mirrored to my experience being a white woman in terms of having an identity that does face challenges to some degree but whose challenges are also corrupted in order to persecute or justify violence against others, for example how crime against white women is used to persecute Black men by people who don't meaningfully care about women at all. Idk if that makes sense, also definitely not the most important issues to discuss rn, just would be curious to hear a discussion about past and present uses of (semi?) marginalized groups to justify harming other marginalized groups, entrenching the system with the guise of caring about people?

I saw someone suggest some discussion about the way rural poor people are talked about, and I think that would be a good tangent. There's a "gentle savage" undertone mixed into the "helpless illiterates" vibes that, in my opinion, deserves to be examined.

Sounds great! Right-wing American commentator Candace Owens has been refused entry to Australia for her upcoming speaking tour.

Thank you for taking the time to make this, Matt. Hard times are coming. I hope we will show up for each other in the ways we know we need to. Take care of yourself—we need your voice. Glad to be in it with you.

✔️Would love your thoughts on the companies/ceos and their political donations in the last election. ✔️ Any current left leaning politicians you think could have a chance in four years. ✔️I have a few coworkers who voted for Trump because of processed food?? Found it wild they think food will be healthier under Trump but would be interested in a deep dive of how they got there. Relatively new watcher here!! Really appreciate your content during these times. Hope you are taking care of your peace 🩷

Were you still planning on doing the Lohanthony video?

Frank

Since you’re a big Britney fan, I would be really interested in hearing your take on dr drew and how he “diagnoses” people without ever having spoken to them and just generally using other people’s pain for profit.

Ruby

Hey Matt! i joined to beg you (if this hasn't been put forward before) to look into the youtube channel fundie fridays. They do great videos on christian fundamentalism (and gay stuff) and are really forward thinking and kind with their words. I think they would be up for doing colabs too.

Seconding. I’ve also heard that R Kelly’s royalties go to his victims? Not sure if true but adds another layer to think about

cass

coming in here late, but RFK would be so interesting (even if it’s just talking about the "Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would pour into the windows of the car, and it was the rankest thing on the planet” quote)
