(x2 this rant mannnn.)

Okay, I had to let that off bro... it's been tough... I was trying to work this out in the meantime but I keep getting told "we'll figure something out" and nothing is changing. I've been told this over 5x the last 8 months. Things may get a little rocky within the next 4-6 weeks if I'll actually try to find a spontaneous apartment and start a moving phase rq... If it does, I'll let you all know!

My poor buddy is pissed every day but so am I LOL. That ending was RIGHT after this bro, I'm tellin ya. Now how do I stay locked in with bro either looking right at me or jumping at the door hitting that last meow🤣

I moved from Texas to Alaska once and any moving trip to/from Alaska is expensive as hell. I spent most of what I had, lived with my parents for a while and got kicked out basically because Indigo had an accident inside when they didn’t follow my directions about keeping him in his kennel when they leave (he got into something that made him sick while they were gone). So the situation was like “it’s either you both leave or your dog leaves”. Hell no. I didn’t have any savings, but I took to Facebook to see if anyone knew any cheap places to stay short time while apartment hunting (like roommates or whatever) and an old friend from high school’s retired mom offered me her daughters room while I searched and was more than happy to have Indigo too since she was lonely with no kids in the house and her dog passing away recently. I didn’t have a lot of money and was on a budget, but really really lucked out with this ad on Craigslist for a very cheap, very cute, tiny condo in a pretty safe part of town. I made sure to go stop by the complex first and then looked up the landlord. She was an old retired author who lived mostly off grid with her husband and wanted someone she could rent the condo out to long term. Lol, I contacted her and we met up at a Taco Bell near the condo to talk about the lease, get to know each other a little bit, and for her to meet Indigo and it all turned out perfectly. $750 lease that allowed pets with no extra fees. She dropped the price to $700 after the first year because she wanted me to stay for a long time. So!! While most people have the ick for Craigslist, I highly recommend it for apartment hunting as long as you do all your research first. My story was a success story and I know you can find yours too!

Sheeeesh! What a steal, I never actually considered FB or Craigslist but that's a positive experience that I'd love to actually look into. Thanks for that, I'm going to consider what I know, either MI or back to TX for another year. I'd love to go Chicago but I think I have to go at whatever pace I can for now, the big city will have to wait for a while! When it comes to the research, am I just googling the name of the person, property and vetting the area like normal? Did you have a contract to sign through Craigslist?

Katie

That’s probably smart to go somewhere familiar where you also have friends and/or family. And yeah, Facebook Marketplace does have a lot of great options that are way cheaper than looking on an apartment website or whatever. I honestly have liked having a landlord better in this place and my last couple apartments more than a leasing company. But yes, when you find places that look promising, I google Map the address and look at it from street view, maybe do a drive by if it’s close, and also google who the person leasing is. They will usually have their own website, be on LinkedIn or be on some type of realtor website. Landlords are usually more laid back about utilities and that kind of stuff too. Just have to find the right one and make sure to ask as many questions as possible.

It's totally not a minor situation when it's giving you so much stress and throwing obstacles up around the things you do on the daily to make a living. Cats are 100% not easy to keep in a small, confined area, especially if they aren't able to just see what's happening outside of their space. That's at least the experience I've had with previous cats that I've owned. My last cat which was technically my very first official house ONLY cat and he was given to me by my dad, with only my mom's knowledge and approval of it beforehand. That was kind of a big deal because we also lived with my grandparents. My grandad had always been an animal magnet and my grandma was more on the dislike end of the spectrum when it came to just animals in general. It sucked, because neither of them would've been too happy to agree to taking in a house cat had they been approached about it from the jump, so I felt really pressured to try to keep Axel in my room. That was kind of hard to do seeing as though I didn't have an actual door to my room at the time, just a big curtain, so he was technically just confined to my room and the hallway for the most part and he would just go into the hall and scream at the door leading to the living room in the middle of the night for what seemed like hours at a time sometimes. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ Eventually everyone did come around to him being a part of the family and he was able to access the rest of the house in the daytime on most days, but unless he slept through most of the night he would always be out there screaming at the closed door a couple of times in the AM. So, Jasper's definitely always going to be yearning to explore and venture out on his own terms when the doors are closed, whether he's able to be more free range or not. I think it would definitely help if he had access to more space for sure though, so he's not feeling too trapped.

Sorry you're going through such a rough situation. It's tough since it's not like the cat can be reasoned with in terms of his happiness and it seems like you've tried to suggest pretty reasonable alternatives to let him know a bit more IMHO. My advice may come off a little bit differently since I am generally risk adverse but take it with a grain of salt because I also have not had to be in a situation where moving without the opportunity to save and prepare was necessary. What I would say is if your decision is fixed what is the maximum amount of time that you're willing to hold off for that would actually benefit you? There was some mention of holiday deals, I don't know how that works but I would double check the math and confirm the amount that would be saved by moving next month vs in 3 months if you're able to hunker down and save/plan. Including that math not only the savings from any rental deals but the costs associated with moving. If it's not possible and you really have to move imminently then I see other good suggestions in comments but I guess I'm just thinking about how can you maximize the situation you have now so that your next move is set up for success

Omg yes, so you know exactly what's going on! I think I'd be even more understanding if I've seen him mess things up but I haven't he's honestly really good and chillin from my experience. I just keep basically getting told yeah, yeah, we'll let you do something with him so you can work without issues just get back to us in a couple days... and nothing happens, then I bring it back up and nothing. I'm glad your people were able to accommodate for Axel in your situation that's excellent news! My thing is, I KNOW y'all hear these screaming cats LOL.

Taisha Caldwell

Right?! It was definitely impossible not to hear our's yowling his soul out through these super thin walls! Figured they liked the quiet version of him a lot better than the expressive one. 😂 Same here though, Axel was a longer haired cat, so the only thing I could ever say he ever really messed up were people's clothes when he wanted to lay on them or beside them or whatever. He was super chill, just wanted extra places to lay around and nap in, more company to steal attention from, and he occasionally wanted to be able to look out of the screen door and windows. Nothing crazy. Sounds to me like in your situation, they're telling you that they're going to figure something out and then they're just not communicating or brainstorming amongst themselves at all about it, or maybe they just don't really want to give themselves the opportunity to get attached to Jasper in any way. Or maybe they're trying to wait and see if the kinks will iron themselves out first, which we know they won't. I don't know, it's hard to say when the only answer you ever get is a perpetual "Let's talk about this later." And you know what Moon Sang-Tae said about what later means, it'll be addressed some time before you die. For your sake, I hope it's just that they're putting off really having the necessary discussion about it. That's the option with the quickest fix, but I'd love to hear that they have a change of heart before you end up just having to find a new place altogether. That's definitely a lot of trouble to go through for such a minor issue. 🤞🏾

Axel sounds like Jaspers buddy fr, cause they be chillin but LOVE to lay on dark colored clothes LOL. Honestly nah, they come up here every couple weeks, pet him, call him so adorable and cute and then say "if only he didn't shed so much and run all over the place" then put him back in my room and move about their days. Whenever I ask, they say we'll figure something out and then nothing. I think it's an out of sight, out of mind thing and as long as he isn't in their sight it's chill. Which would be fine if this was enough room for him and enough for him to not scream while I work lol, it's a loop! Sometime before ya die huh... Fair enough, and that's why I'm trying to weigh addressing it myself by just taking it on the chin and arranging a place for us to coexist lol. I think it's also annoying me even further because all my friends say "we'll figure something out" too, every time I ask them to hangout or do a new activity. Thanks for the understanding here Taisha! I'm glad someone could relate even though it does suck!

Taisha Caldwell

Absolutely! Anytime, Anthony. Always important to know you aren't the only one harboring some of these crazily specific struggles every now and then, and trying to look for new perspectives. It definitely sucks though! I hate that for you because knowing that tidbit of info, I would say that that's probably the best thing that you could do for you and Jasper. He'd be happier for it and if you can manage to swing it without driving yourself in too big of a financial crater while making everything work, you'd finally get that peace of kind as well. It's crazy realizing how little friends want to hang out for new experiences the older we get, but I've actually had to make new friends younger than me at work in order to actually do activities with someone other than my little family. That "We'll see" be hitting in a different way when you're just needing to get out of the house and into a different type of mental space with other humans that share your interests. I know you'll weather the storm and figure things out just fine! You know we've just got to wait the rougher patches out.
