i don't ever talk about things like this! hear me out

i remember family members telling me not to grow dreadlocks because of how other people would associate me to things i don't do... When i was younger i watched rap videos and had friends involved in the streets trying to teach me signs, boy my mom kicked my ass LOL. I know of people not being alive due to that culture... it's not funny to some people, it's not easy to overlook for others... you can make what could even resemble some type of hand sign in the wrong place and get in some trouble. does that mean they can't throw c's up for cortis? or wyw signs? no -- but two things can be true - the attire, their music, mannerisms in addition to those things are what people are making points of!

I think one point that’s very annoying is that it happens ALL THE TIME. It’ll happen, they’ll apologize, and you would think they would learn but the cycle starts again. I think with the internet, especially now, there is no excuse for this to happen again and again and again.

a2r

Hey Rawna, hope all is well! I agree! That's why everyone thinks it's not giving af or rage baiting for marketing because what else are they left to feel.

Ana

Yes I understand what u mean but some type of genre that has being used for a long time now in kpop not just in kpop but in general and the hip-hop culture and from their documentary and from the people that worked with them and even did interviews and talked about the boys we can see clearly they really appreciate the culture, they are genuine about and we don't even have to say that they love music. But the fact that people saw this trend that they did bcs of the break in video u saw and doing a heart sign and W sign is not gang signs plus if the accusation of them doing gang signs and people saying they are doing culture appropriation is even a worse stereotype since people associated gang with black people, and gangs are not part of a culture or a expecific race. Anthony I know many people understood cortis intentions that is very important, as someone that I know just like me follow the kpop world for a very long time, u know that most of the people that are not even showing their faces and just using this to hate on them don't even care at all about this important matter, that is racism and culture appropriation. I'm of course not here to say how people should feel about cortis and their intentions but as someone who has followed them closely I think I can say they don't have any bad intentions.

nai

i’m so glad that you’re speaking on this and i’m really curious of what the discussions will look like in the community. hopefully everyone keeps a level head and are able to handle these conversations. my take on this is i don’t understand why in the kpop community people choose to act confused or delusional when it comes to black american culture/stereotypes being blatantly shoved in our faces and us speaking out against it? kpop stans only care about these micro aggressions and harmful stereotypes being displayed that only continues to hurt our community when it’s someone they don’t like. calling us sensitive or trying to make it like we are intentionally trying to cancel the boys? like no .. but this “trend” they took a part in was 100% rooted in racist stereotypes?? like buddy they shouldn’t have partaken in it. 😭 no one is trying to cancel cortis. i don’t think at all that they were purposefully doing it in ill-will but they should be called out for it so they can be educated on why it wasn’t okay so it doesn’t continue and god forbid get worse to a kiof situation. and tbh even saying they needed to be educated by us is wild because in the big 25 you’re telling me you can’t figure out why certain things would leave a bitter taste in people’s mouths? i’m tired of the black community having to be silenced whenever we feel uncomfortable.

nai

and what really gets me is atp no shade cortis and tarzzan are doing the EXACT same thing. yet people choose to close their eyes to that fact but full body hate tarzzan?? cause every excuse they have for them you could make for him. a black woman braids tarzzans hair, he shouts out where his inspiration comes from, worked with black producers ect. but there is a LINE where it begins to feel like mockery and cosplay. that they both have been teetering since their debut ! like if we’re gonna talk about it, lets talk about it ! i could have seen this happening from a mile away . like i am in no way surprised . but what really irks me is kpop stans acting like the sagging pants, the aave, the hand motions, ninja emojis in the caption and the ski masks is not directly referencing black american culture. like NO WAY are y’all that delusional?? we’re tired fr. this is the reason why things like this keep happening! bcs people pick and choose what and who to call out. like it honestly feels like i’m being rage baited. 😭

Brittany

Yeah it sucks no one ever listens and everyone is just yelling at each other. I usually don't say anything because I'm Canadian and a woman so my black experience is totally different. I can't even imagine or compare to how it is for Americans so I understand when they are upset. I wouldn't say the video bothered me I don't follow Cortis like that but I did shake my head because why ? Lol like why was all that necessary? It just reminded me of high school when all the guys did that wether they were black or not because they were copying the music they listened to. Does it make it right ? No. The difference these guys are in the public eye and have so many people to go through before it gets posted or maybe the problem is it goes through no one 👀🤷🏾‍♀️. I do think things like this will continue to happen unfortunately unless we get some non Korean people on their teams that looks at what they post. That would be a miracle in Korea honestly 😬. Because sadly they are not looking at if anything will offend anyone unless it offends Korea....They have media training for korea🙃. But yeah these things are always touchy and hard :/.

a2r

Hey Ana! I believe acknowledged everything you commented in the video - minus the internet people who used this as a "omg let's cancel cortis" type of fan war, push other groups down because you simply don't like them type of thing. People saying they're appropriating is not bad, imo, because of the fact that in America the blanket statement of black people are violent, probably in a gang, rappers, drug dealers, etc... apply as a stereotype to black people whether they fall into the stereotype or not. It's taught to black children as they're young that society already views you a certain way... Anyways, tangent aside - due to the music they make, the artists they love, mannerisms they've adopted etc. the first thing to some can jump to is, oh they're imitating black people in that video. They don't sag their pants because they seen other races do it same with their slang and many other things they do! That's fair from that perspective. I don't believe they have ill intentions either, which is what I hoped to double down on in the video. Many things can be true at once though.

a2r

Hey Nai, totally understand! I think Tarzzan is a similar situation as well, different sides of the coin. I don't know entirely what makes him different as I don't know the full story I guess with him but the conversation happening I'm not surprised. I mean, it's even happening before LNGSHOT debuts right.. so, understandable. I do understand that their hand motions from WYW and stuff I get it, but when they seen the trend and said oh we can do that and this instead of actual gang signs are people's points. In the holiday break-in video, they could have theoretically worn skinny jeans and whatever else with a mask or anything else but they kept their streetwear style (understandably) and sagged their pants with a ski mask and fed into a stereotype unintentionally or not. I can see both sides here, I just feel like the side with wanting idols to have accountability gets overlooked a lot of these times.

Dami

Yeah im ngl, they really threw me off with this. One thing I really hate with Kpop in general, that I think is more apparent now than ever is the poser-ness of it all. Idk just the idea of people who haven’t grown up in America especially Black American circles, trying to imitate what we do for 1.)profit and 2.) aesthetics is cringey at best and disrespectful at worst. Especially if what they’re imitating is relating to gang culture. A world they know nothing about. I still remember my mom telling my brother he’s not allowed to wear bandanas, durags or have his hoodie up outside the house. Kpop is great when they aren’t trying to be something they aren’t. This why all my fave groups tend to be groups that are very “Kpop” if that makes sense. Also one talking point that I’m hating is the “they worked with black producers”. lol majority of groups have worked with black producers, who do you think is making the songs??? But srsly why are people who have no actual sustainable relationships with the Black community (Cortis in this case) using stereotypes that have been used against us, while also enjoying and promoting in a musical genre created by us. It don't make no damn sense. Overall I wish K-pop would just move out of this trend of adopting Black aesthetics and culture without hesitation. Their only saving grace is the fact that the average age in that group is 17, and tbh I fear this is a problem with young men even in America. Glamorizing gang culture and perpetuating harmful rhetoric. Edit: I’ve been following Cortis since their debut, and I’m still gonna support, since as a metal head and hip hop head, I’ve seen way worse. But I just wish Kpop Stans would stop trying to do mental gymnastics to defend their faves. Like they fucked, thats okay. I fs did and said dumb things when I was in highschool. It’s not hate, it’s just calling it out

a2r

Exactly! All I see is teenagers who are replicating what they listen to. But aiming for global appeal, not considering potential backlash in these situations I don't get! Gotta be able to assess risk and know why.

Ana

Hii🫶🏻I hope u are doing well. I want to clear my point up since I feel like u said much everything my comment did. And in my opinion saying that the tarzzan situation is the same as Cortis is not true. Bcs we can clearly see the difference in intentions when Cortis do a thieves video I think thieves uses masks, it has nothing to do with black culture same as gangs. So they used this emoji bcs the masks they were wearing not bcs of the n word like tarzzan did. I can even send to u the general chat the tarzzan ig prints . He literally said “fam and the ninja emoji with a 🫶🏽 “ like this and a fashoo with a ninja again. So u can see the different interactions as well.

Dami

Tbh if you ask me the only reason why Cortis got a pass of validity is bc there was some plausible deniability. Tarzzan is full cosplay, everything he does is a costume and aesthetic to him. He’s trying to curate a particular image, this is why it’s so fake. This is also why he gets smoke compared k-rappers who at the very least, believe the kool aid their drinking. Cortis was okay in my book because while yes, they were clearly reheating carti’s nachos, they didn’t come out with cornrows, timbs, a durag, and all the other markers of Black cosplay you often see with Kpop.

Ana

Another thing guys I’m reading all the points for me to learn more. I’m Brazilian so as u can see I’m white but as u can imagine I’m in a very diverse country so I know all the types of races and backgrounds u guys can imagine. So as a foreigner of course some problems, stereotypes, racism and things like that everyone should know with no explanation needed as someone said we are already in 2025 but I’m not gonna lie there are some things even with the American culture that’s is still hard for me to understand like how do I know for sure what is culture appropriation and what is culture appreciation. For example here in Brazil it doesn’t exist a thing such as culture appropriation bcs our culture is not divided from races but the Brazilian culture in general. ( of course the problems u guys said it above about the way u let ur hair, the way u act, the way u talk being a black person this unfortunately exists in every country I feel like). It’s just the culture appropriation that is very different from here. And about some type of a genre that was”born “ bcs of the black culture, should people don’t do songs with this style if they are not part of the culture? I’m genuinely asking bcs I see many different opinions coming from the same community and culture of course every individual thinks differently since some people see a problem and some don’t. Bcs for American people should be easier to see everything clearly but in other countries is a little different how we see things or don’t even have this conversation. Bcs in Brazil and in the states I would say that is different to a point where in the USA the black community and the culture that comes with it is more separate from the other races than here in Brazil with black people, white, Asian or whatever. So I’m always open to try to understand it bcs it really can sound obvious for u guys but for others countries even the way the society is organized and the cultures are different❤️

nai

hi ana ! when it comes to the ninja emoji part i can see why people took tarzzan’s a lot harsher, i’m not saying in the context that his was used is similar to cortis at all. but saying that what they did had nothing to do with black culture i disagree with. they could have simply dressed as ninjas and stole from the hybe building. why did they have to sag their pants, wear ski masks, throw up signs with their hands that are similar to black gang culture and literally partake in a trend that is rooted in racist stereotypes even if they were not aware of it, it was still harmful. if they genuinely had no clue how this was going to be interpreted which again they honestly should know better especially martin .. then this is still something that should be addressed so they can learn from it.

a2r

Exactly! It definitely makes sense. I am seeing the same convo of the producers and such, but that's the point -- kpop has been bringing black producers over in general and where is it based off? Or dare I say, make it like Family Guy - use something from every culture and other aesthetics too. A piece from every book, more often. I mean shoot, you're right. After seeing some of my family members from cousins to nephews now that they're 14-17 was definitely just like this or worse.

kat

Ngl I dont think it’s necessarily racist or done with ill intent but it is definitely distasteful. This isnt new to bighit either. You might not have been there when it was bts doing this( cultural appropriation from multiple cultures, slurs, colorism and all that shit). But it was alot to handle back then definitely more than now. I personally thought it was over because of the way TXT debuted and are very culturally aware and sensitive, so its kind of hard to believe that they dont know it will cause some kind of backlash. Hybe never apologizes about these kinds of things, so I dont think this will ever get addressed unless they do it themselves but they were live I think yesterday and did the same heart/crip sign concoction loll. Its definitely nowhere near as bad as Kiss of Life since their entire fanbase was made entirely of the people they mocked(literally the entire reason why they blew up), Julie had already apologized for saying the n word before so its no doubt they knew too😭. And also the only thing Ive seen from Tarzzan is the braids and the ninja emoji ( lowkey reminds me of the whole rich chigga mess). Also some people said that he said the n word as well when singing along, but I personally couldn’t hear it. He denied it and said he’d never use a slur or offend anyone, so idk. Im lowkey sideyeing everyone right now tho lol nobody’s getting my full support bc I remember how shitty it felt when kiof did that live, and they were my ult gg at the time. Also with Jay Parks group coming out soon(they do seem really sweet tho so idk), its too many of these groups like back in the day we only had bts and block b😭 And omgg all the new videos of blackpink slanging it back and forth😭😭 including rose on a guitar like tf??? I did grew up in nyc tho so this isnt really new to me. Everyone was saying the N-word and pretending to be someone they aren’t from the Hispanic, Albanians, Arabs, Indians, koreans and chinese. but Its too much now we all know better but what do I know. Sorry for the rant if you managed to read the whole thing loll majority of my friends are lowkey anti kpop so I can’t even talk about this without hearing “I told you so.”

nai

i agree with all your points here. i also have never understood the “they work with black producers.” take. bcs like you said everyone does and working alongside black people does not give you a golden ticket to being racially insensitive. 😭 the music is one thing but to build a brand off a culture you know nothing about for the looks and the trendiness of it (not even speaking specifically just abt cortis here.) and glamorizing gang culture which these koreans have never lived through a day in their lives really bothers me . like this entire thing is very distasteful.

kat

Heavy on that!!! Lets take a look at SM😭 literally all their hits are made by black people since way back then and has the CA, racism and colorism ever stopped. Its getting too muchh atp

a2r

Other people I see are also anti kpop, music aside just because they see those things when they slip it immediately makes them not try. I get it I guess right? I mean, not as diverse as NY here in MI but yeah, same here in HS, get in where you fit in. I never liked it + seeing everything switch when the majority black friends leave the room it sucked. Eh, it'll always be something probably! Haha, I'm sure it's like that in other countries around the world with diverse pops too. Doubling down to let you know they may not have meant that - I mean, I can even take it outside of CORTIS. My boy Choi from Treasure has some sort of sign he throws up all the time + his mannerisms and how he was talking at the show I watched - it can be taken the same way. KIOF still hurts fasho.. Tons of groups coming, and even more to come! lol for better or worse (fomo/too much to keep up with)

Ana

Yes I can see this point clearly now. I have been in this last days really trying to see everyone’s opinions (from people who seriously care and are taking this situation that happen to explain it). If u would like to read what I wrote in the comments I think u would understand better coming from a foreigner like me, bcs how different culture appropriation is different from Brazil and the USA. So when people say everybody should know better I agree but there is some points that is difficult to understand bcs of how different it is. Yeah I stand for what I said that I don’t think Cortis has any malicious intentions but now I can see better that they should know since they appreciate the culture how this could be harmful and left a bitter taste. I still think this is not comparable with kiss of life or tarzzan bcs of the intentions. Also the only reason I said about the producers is bcs of people are talking about the type of genre of music they do so that’s the only reason I said that meaning they understand and appreciate it🫶🏻💕

Dami

Thank you for trying to learn. I understand that as a Brazilian living in America, even with having exposure to other races, this conversation may not be understood. For starters there's some cultural and historical context that Black American fans are referencing. When people are talking about cultural appropriation, it's not just one particular thing. It's about the method in which it's done. Simply put, it's inappropriately adopting a culture, and this can be done in many ways. It's also important to know that throughout all of American history, African American culture and even other Black Cultures have been continuously appropriated. In fact during the era of segregation–when Black and White people were separated legally–It was common practice for Black musical artists to have their work stolen, with credit given to a White artist or for their music to be “toned” down for white musical audiences. This is still happening even today. Another fact is that during the 90s, N.W.A, a famous rap group, many white Americans and the press demanded that their songs be removed from the radio, and that their album be banned. Only later for white suburban kids to start rapping. Black Americans have been fired for wearing their natural hair, braids, or locs. We have been racially profiled for the clothes we wear and the way we speak. Etc. Yet kpop idols mimic all of these to wear as costumes. The same outfits that my family friends were wearing in the 2000s is now a watered down aesthetic for idols to wear as stage costumes. The same braids that my cousins weren't allowed to have because white America called it ghetto, are the same cornrows these idols wear when they want to show an “uncivilized” or “wild” image. When Black fans are saying that a kpop idol has doesn’t cultural appropriation, its better understood as “The way this idol has represented or used aspects of my culture is either inauthentic or harmful” As a non black rapper you can be either an appreciator or appropriator of culture. Jurin from XG is a great example of cultural appreciation. She is someone who appreciates rap and hip-hop without needing to cosplay people or rip directly from black aesthetics. She's authentic in the way she presents herself and her work. Or another Korean artist like Dean is a good example of cultural appreciation. Tarzzan on the other hand is an example of cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is not about intent, but how it affects the people of that culture, and what sort of narratives you’re pushing when you represent said culture. I understand that this isn’t common knowledge for everyone. However I believe that when you partake in a culture you need to do your best to educate yourself on such topics. For example even though I am Black, living in America–I still enjoy a lot of east asian pop culture. Anime, K/C/J dramas, games, youtubers, reality tv etc. I’m not even a public figure, but as someone who enjoys east asian pop culture, I’m still responsible in being mindful and respectful towards the people behind it. Honestly this really is a problem for groups that steer into a “hip-hop” or rap heavy direction. I'm not saying that other groups are incapable of anti-blackness or racist rhetoric, absolutely not. But I think there is something to say about groups who have a clear visual/musical direction taken from Black aesthetics/culture showing the most anti-blackness. Edit: sorry about all the comments, I'm realizing that I acidentally ratioed you Anthony. LMAOO

kat

To give some foreign perspective. I came to the States when I was around 8, and one of the first things my dad told me was to never say the n-word and its history. Now even my little cousins back home know it’s wrong, mostly because of the internet. People really underestimate how popular African American culture is globally, my Arab mom, who doesn’t follow celebrities, still knows Nicki, Cardi, Kanye, etc. even look at cardi going viral in Saudi Arabia right now too. To appreciate isnt to appropriate and thats really hard for people to understand for some reason. Heavy on the switching up too. Once we got to college, everyone suddenly dropped the AAVE, stopped saying the n-word, and started dressing differently. I also see my religion and culture constantly mocked and appropriated by both K-pop and Western music, so without overstepping, I understand how frustrating it is for people.

Ana

Wow thank u for taking ur time to explain to me in a deeper level. I do my research but it’s difficult to fully understand some parts to me but I understand better how ur culture and the kpop world collided, and the stereotypes. Even though not just bcs I like Cortis and like I said about their intentions but I think they are not doing in a malicious way. But I also know the problem is way deeper than that when it comes to all the kpop. And btw I’m not a Brazilian living in the USA. I still live in Brazil. Thank u again 🫶🏻❤️

a2r

Haha no, your comments and others just showed me that people would be okay with talking about things haha! It’s all good I’m just glad to see people talking to one another respectfully

Mattie H.

See maybe this is a bit unpopular, but I don’t like when someone who is non black so much as sags. Bc if I can still see black folks being fired from jobs, pulled over, or much worse die for things that are inherently (even if it’s a negative stereotype) us no one else should be participating. And I know that that’s such a fine line bc, am I saying folks shouldn’t make black genres of music or be fans of black culture? No, but until it’s a worldwide praised thing, we’re gonna get people like Gdragon, Blackpink, KISS of Life, BTS, Jay park, Tarzzan (and lit every other idol ever) who do too much in my opinion in the name of “appreciation”. I’ll get off my soapbox, but this is no hate to Cortis specifically (as someone who vibes with their music) something’s are never serious enough to be out here canceling folks. But again, if a black boy can be indiscriminately punished, called ghetto, etc for the way they’re acting in this video, it’s not cute to me.
