I went to a thrift store like place today and they had this print from the 80’s I thought it was a bunch of black people from some other country cause I seen a flat top haircut haha, didn’t peep the Jakarta first glance.

Anyways, would that be odd to have this as a decor piece in my apartment? The arts dope, never been to Jakarta and I’m pretty sure I have no Indonesian roots 🤣 I just want to make sure it can be respectful to have it, if not then I’d just keep waiting to source other art. Maybe it’s a non issue and I’m over thinking.

The piece looks sick, if it fits the aesthetic I don’t see why not haha you may have to answer to Have you ever been to Jakarta? I didn’t know your Indonesian in the future though lol Edit: I don’t think it’s disrespectful if you are admiring an art piece and adding it to the home, it gets to disrespectful territory when you change the art in some way or make the aesthetics some how disrespectful towards the culture

I’m not Indonesian but just wanted to check who made the art at least; looks like it’s Tony Biddle; he was Canadian but lived in Indonesia for a bit and made the ‘Jakarta: A World of its Own’ poster; the site I found says it’s “a playful caricature of street-life in the chaotic, bustling city — back in 1984” so seems harmless enough (based on artist intent at least) If there’s any Indonesian patrons here who could chime in though, that would be ideal :) From my perspective, the fact that you’re even thinking twice about it is a good sign! I think I’d have thought twice too just bc of the caricature-esque nature of the art since it’s from the 80s but I saw online that the artist also made a modern 40th anniversary version of this poster but the style still looks the same even in 2026

Hi, I’m Malaysian but have Indonesian relatives. In my opinion, we’re generally pretty chill people, so I don’t think it would be disrespectful for you to buy that art. However, I did notice a mosque in the caricature (building with the moon and star on top), so I’m not too sure about that—especially since I don’t think you’re Muslim, right? Personally, I think it might be better not to get it—but not because it’s disrespectful to the culture, rather out of respect for the religion.

hi, Muslim here,, there’s absolutely no problem! anyone can have art of mosques, religious cites etc as long as it’s not being disrespected or not depicted accurately(distortion, orientalist, history revisionist) etc..
