Weapon, rarity varies

This magic weapon is a launcher that weighs 10 pounds and resembles a hollow tube, which bristles with electric power and is designed in the likeness of a behir. The launcher is a ranged weapon that has the ammunition (range 40/120), loading, and two-handed properties. If you are proficient with crossbows or firearms, you are proficient with the behirazooka.

The launcher can be loaded with any ammunition or throwable equipment, such as a flask of alchemist's fire or a weapon that has the thrown property. If the launcher is loaded with typical ammunition (arrows, bullets, or crossbow bolts), its ranges are doubled, and it uses a d4 for its damage die; the damage type matches the nature of the ammunition (GM's discretion). Treat any target that's hit with a ranged attack from the launcher as if it were hit by the fired projectile, including any of its additional effects. Furthermore, on a hit, the target takes extra lightning damage based on the behirazooka's rarity: 1d6 (uncommon), 2d6 (rare), or 3d6 (very rare). If there's another target within 5 feet of the original one and behind it (relative to you), that target also takes lightning damage equal to half the amount rolled on the d6s.

'The roar of a behir—the might of a storm incarnate—in your hands! Fire away with impunity, hero: nothing can stand in your way with the proper amount of fire power.'(Ammunition not included)

As a big fan of Behirs, this is fantastic

I'm a bit confused as to what "within 5 feet of the target and behind it (relative to you)" means. It's that supposed to be two different additional descriptors (ie 5ft splash zone around the target, as well as another potential target from the "exhaust" port of the bazooka) or is that a single, confusing descriptor?

This would be much better if it actually fired a live behir at the target. Or even a dead behir doing significant bludgeoning damage.

While that would indeed be awesome. Behirs are a little big to fit in there and it would be quite the challenge to maintain "ammo" or do you mean if it could magically summon behir to launch at targets? Hmmm... tiny behirs. That is an interesting idea, but lots of questions. Now you got me thinking 👍

I read it as two effects myself, because obviously this is a magical bazooka, but yeah I can see how the wording is a little confusing.

Elfin magic! Get rid of loading requirement and give the item a limited number of uses (per day/week/etc.). I'm going to suggest a "whale gun" (sounds like railgun) to my DM. There's already precedent for moon druids (in 2014) flying above targets and turning into an elephant/ankylosaur/mammoth to wreak terrible fall damage havoc.

The Griffon's Saddlebag

That's saying that is someone else is immediately behind the hit target, they *also* take some of that lightning damage!

Now all I can think of is a Monty Python style "Cattlepult" a catapult that magically creates and launches cows.

This item has a stellar name. Make it be all it was meant to be...

This is an engaging idea you got here James. I say the creature/ammo should have some sort of protective field around it so it can survive impact and then hang around several rounds attacking the target. Maybe this is even a weapon special to summoners letting them use summoning spells or maybe just spell slots to charge at the time of firing? Though I could definitely see druids also having a version.

Requires attunement and uses Action to fire behir. Range somewhere between 60-120'. Assuming the item can be wielded by any class, I would set a fixed DC (say 15 or 16) with a target Dex save to avoid being hit. Failure results in Xd6 damage and the target being knocked prone. Success results in no damage or prone condition. The behir would take the damage, would/would not be proned (need to think more on implications of this, and would become enraged at the target. The behir would roll its own initiative and engage with target as appropriate on its turn. Great item to gain advantage on target and distract it, somewhat akin to Summon Greater Demon spell.

Awesome! Hope they make some version of this 👍👍
