Painting 3 is snowy and icy trees using wet into wet for the white of the snow. For this painting we break it down into sections so we don't have to work as fast. Using the watery and light colored base as our light values and slowly building up from there. There are so many fun ways to paint snowy trees, but I think this way is my favorite. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, magenta, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green.

Brushes: round 4 and 10 - Princeton brand.

So pretty! I’m excited to paint this one!

Kristin Van Leuven

Haha yes we went on a little weekend family trip so I made sure it was all ready to go early ♥️

Lindsay

Oh I am so here for this. I just did 17 versions of 9/100 (2025). I think i still have my snowy tree template lol.

Kristin Van Leuven

That’s awesome! This one is similar, but approaches the snow the opposite way. I’m interested to see which one you find easier or more straight forward

Harry Brownsell

This one looks lovely. I'm keeping up this year!

Jeanette

I like the background in this one better than the ‘25 painting! I am interested to see how I paint this one differently with a wet on wet approach. The technique practice stretches me!

Denomin8tor

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the YouTube link. Thank you. Also thank you doing these tiny paintings.

memaw1963

My struggle in watercolor is painting trees. I commit to myself that I will learn how to paint trees this year.

Wardee

Love it! Can't wait to try it tonight!

Jane

How and where do I post photos of my paintings for you to see? I'm new!

Laura Thorson

There is a "chats" section on the far left if you're on desktop, and probably in the menu section if you're on mobile and you'll find us all in there!

Theresa (Terri K)

I can’t wait to try this! I am manifesting snow clumps like you made Kristin!!

Lindsay

So question @Kristin. When you say “Indigo” now that you are using a W&N split primary palette, I think this is what I REALLY think of as “Indigo” now. Before with the LetterSparrow colours when you said “Indigo” I would (correctly I think) use Payne’s Grey but now I think I should stop making that substitution. Am I tracking correctly? (My indigo, Daniel Smith, behaves like W&N indigo.)

Lindsay

—Outcome: I made different mistakes with each method. My mistake for 9/100 (“Leave everything white and paint negatively”) was, I would forget what was supposed to be white and there would go a piece of snow. My mistake with this one (“Lay out the snow as an allover light wash”) was to use too dark an initial wash (and honestly it’s a misjudgement I feel I could make again, not quite understanding how it will dry). —Very nice to be able to try both methods, thank you.

My snowy tree isn't looking so good lol. I'm planning on joining the live meeting on this tomorrow. The Cerulean paint I have doesn't look as lovely as yours.

Kati Atwood

There is also a video from last year - after painting 9? We all have problems with trees 😆

Kati Atwood

Some use Paynes Gray anyway - I also have heard people use ‘neutral tint’

Melodee Skiles

I'm interested in her answer--I used DS indigo for all of the 2025 paintings when she called for indigo. Loved how they turned out.

Sandy Manning

Kristin I am definitely noticing how often you tap your brush on the paper towel. Before I never noticed but as you say check how often you do it I am more aware now so thank you for encouraging us to note this point. Am looking forward to trying this one out looks magical and icy too 🤗

Marcela

Please help How can i access the 2025 tiny paintings ?

Melodee Skiles

Marcela, if you click Kristin’s photo you can find the menu option for “collections” and the 2025 collection is there.

Angela Marie

Go to collections and choose tiny paintings 2025 and they will all be there

Anne Oconnor

Wasn’t sure if the background was meant to be wet

Marcela

Thank you but how do i get to Collections ?? I have gotten there before but i do not know vi i got there 😳😳😳

Marcela

I have clicked on Kristin’s photo many times and it doesn’t take me to collections 😳😳😳

MaryKate Meyer (Du Beau)

lol. I had to throw mine away, even after getting out the dr martins bleed proof white. I guess I gotta go watch the ‘Trees for people who can’t make trees’ video! 😂🤣

Cl

You go so incredibly fast. :(

Pam Cope

Practice practice! I’ve done this three times and still not satisfied. Going to do one more then go back and look at #9 2005.

Jean

I'm with Pam and MaryKate - two tries and still don't like it. But my goal for 2026 is to do all of them, and accept the learning process.

Kim

I'm happy with it even though my snowy areas don't look very snowy. Still looks like a tree. LOL

Gwen Ritch

Lost my snowy areas..it would be nice to have the reference to see? On the screen too? Fun

Leslie

I"m just getting started with the 100 at the end of March. I made it 3 times, with the added tutorial, and it still looks nothing like yours. Practice, practice, practice......
