Purple sunrise for #23! I can't wait to show you the process of layering and glazing in a landscape today. There is a wet into wet portion at the beginning that I would watch all the way through first, but everything after that is built up layer by layer. Start with the lightest layers first and slowly the painting will come to life. The middle of the painting will feel awkward, but just keep going! A key element: make sure that your brightest yellows and blue/purples don't have much overlap in the sky. Use magenta as a buffer and the dominant color when mixtures need to overlap. I can't wait to see how you do with this one! Please let me know if you have any questions.

Paper: arches 140 lb cotton 9X12" paper that I've cut into 3X3" pieces, giving me 12 pieces per page.

Paint: For this project I am using a split primary palette- cad yellow deep, lemon yellow, cad red, perm. rose, ultramarine blue, cerulean, indigo and sap green. The colors I'm using today are - cad yellow, perm. rose, sap green, and Indigo.

Brushes: round 4 & 10 Princeton brand.

I am new here and trying to match your palette with my holbein colors. In the 2025 tiny paintings I notice that you say the Letter and Sparrow cerulean is more like a pthalo...would that be the red or yellow/green shade? Thank you! I love the Letter and Sparrow colors but they are quite expensive and frequently out of stock when I search them.

Kristen, I'm fairly new to your Patreon. Where do we ask questions? I notice that some here get answered and others don't.

Wow! I am learning so much about mixing colors. The dark purple for the bushes and trees silhouette, absolutely amazing. 🙂💕

Hi Kristen, What brand Magenta do you use? Mine is very different, is it more like a permanent rose?

Katydid

I like having the reference photo there during the painting to not only see how you interpret/compose the painting from the photo, which I find extremely beneficial, but also to see how I might do it. I recently did the Banff painting and was looking at the photo a bit more than watching you paint and I over did the detail of the mountains. It was a good learning experience.

Hi Kristen, are you using both permanent rose and magenta in this painting, or when you say magenta, do you really mean perm rose, you have previously mentioned that you are only using permanent rose this year so just wanted to clarify!! Thank so much, Charlotte

I’m gonna check out my different magenta colors because yours looks very pink

I think the trick is to just keep mixing and I’ll use the colors that I like best
