Maybe my favorite Mario lore is how Nintendo accidentally gave Birdo the PERFECT arc of a trans woman navigating her transition in a society that doesn't accept her. She's first introduced in a game manual with "He thinks he's a girl", then a bunch of later manuals describe her as being of indeterminate gender, and most recently she's just simply a woman, and no official mention is ever made anymore of how she's "actually" male.

I've really just gotta join the chorus of posters championing Bowser's Inside Story as a prime example of Bowser being a full protagonist, AND being full of protagonists. Though we should totally get more of that type of game.
