You absolutely need to read the original ROM: Space Knight. Bill Mantlo at his best. Fantastic writing with some of the best covers of the 80s. I for one am surprised that Caldwell was not familiar with it considering some of his comics knowledge. Firestorm the Nuclear Man is arguably a more niche pull.

The Merlin catching a stray as old and boring was so shocking to me because I got one for Christmas in 2008, and my sister and I loved it so much we would physically fight over it. But also we didn't get internet or phones until 2017 so i guess it's possible we were just dazzled by technology like cavemen seeing fire for the first time, or maybe toys have processed a lot in the past sixteen years alone

What's so great though is how specific and siloed his intense frustration is. Like, he'll go fully OFF on his opinion, but the second someone cracks a zingy joke - even if the theme of it is in contradiction to his point, he SO easily laughs at it with FULL untainted joy. That ability - to hold true to your authentic position without making it your identity, nor letting it diminish your love of your wife and friends, is the strength of character we should all aspire to. (I'm slightly uncomfortable with how sincere I'm being, lol... I feel as if surrounded by sentient eyebrows.)

I do agree with Murph that this "Halloween" "special" sucks, but I also think that Emily and Caldwell have touched on something really interesting with the religious themes they read in the film. It might legitimately be worth exploring religious themes in this piece of media through a lens of critical theory.

That question has an answer: he's not a real ghost, it's a trick by the town's Gaston. This story contains no reason at all that Grinch was ineffectual. It's incompatible with the fearful way he's being treated and is never even implied to have an explanation. To cite Sleepy Hollow as a good excuse for this suggests that you find both equally illogical, which is a failure to see the sense in Sleepy.

ROMhead here with a Spaceknight Fun Fact: one of Rom’s most memorable team-ups was with The Thing in Marvel Two-in-One #99. The Ever-Lovin’ Blue Eyed Thing’s rocky transformation and ROM’s metal cyborg shell made them a fun team, so I propose that Murph’s stony exterior would actually make him a better teammate to ROM than an enemy

I have a vivid memory from 2nd grade where my teacher played this movie for my class around Halloween. One girls family forbid her from watching it. She had to go out in the hall while we watched it. Her parents were super religious and didn’t want her influenced by this “devil” film. Even in second grade I felt so bad for her.
