Maybe this gets addressed later in the podcast, but rules clarification for the curious! Duplicate looks to be a 3rd party spell, as are (I think) basically all of Jens' spells this campaign. Technically not official, but dndbeyond's format is confusing, especially since I assume they own like every book on it.

So despite being young, hot, and sexy, I also have so many health issues that basically have turned me into a vampire and I can say it’s not for the weak. I can’t go outside w/o 100 spf sunscreen and long sleeves, even in the winter, and have some sort of electrolyte beverage with me everywhere so I can make enough blood to not pass out. Naddpod has been a life saver all the millions of times I’ve had to go to the er for fluids bc I almost passed out again bc I didn’t have enough blood in my brain, so yall are totally right. Being a vampire fucking sucks. But hey atleast we’re hot tho

No there was another case where a wizard I think had like a thing that let him remake objects and the player made a point of saying « I take a good look at these keys » beforehand, but when they asked to replicate them the dm said the wizard couldn’t possibly remember the details of the key and tried to draw a real life parallel by walking through the room while holding their car keys. The court did rule in favor of the player I believe

Okay so Kate Beckinsale is a vampire in Underworld, in which vampires and werewolves are at war with each other. The werewolf leader being played by a very sexy Michael Sheen, who was also dating Kate at the time. Michael Sheen of course went on to play a vampire in Twilight, whereas Kate Beckinsale played a vampire hunter in Van Helsing. A movie in which werewolves are Dracula’s thralls once they have completely transformed but also a werewolf is the only thing that can kill Dracula, which is how Hugh Jackman’s Van Helsing -who is also the arch angel Gabriel, and as we all know Michael Sheen did go on to play an angel on Good Omens- ultimately defeats him, by temporarily becoming a werewolf before being cured right at the last minute, but also Kate Beckinsale dies, which sucks. Also, idk that « people » say that werewolves are a metaphor for STDs, I know my enemy JK Rowling has said that, specifically about aids, and it was very poorly received, even before her abominable heal turn. Werewolf have been around since ancient times and are usually a metaphor for like the duality of man caught between his primal nature and like.. societal expectations and such, it’s about repressed desires and rage and such. Also puberty sometimes

Fun fact about werewolf lore/history. Not Just the Tudors has an episode about a real life werewolf trial where a guy named Old Tiess claimed to be a werewolf. Every once in awhile, people will pop up in historical witchcraft trials claiming to be werewolves but they fight on the side of good. They claim that every year Witches from hell try to drag fertile soil down to hell with them and the werewolves are there to fight off the evil Witches. Pretty metal!

It’s been years since I’ve seen it. I don’t remember the character names, or really any of the comedic moments of the movie, but I still remember the scene where he tells his dad he always knew about the coin trick. And the scene where he rushes out of the hospital to the parking lot to talk to his son. I teared up at the first and cried at the second. I went to see it as a teenager thinking it was just going to be another wacky Sandler comedy, and I remember it pretty much started out that way. It made the sincere emotional gut punches hit all the harder. I can still remember Henry Winkler’s (Sandler’s dad) voice choked up with humiliated tears as he apologized for wasting his son’s time. Some really affecting performances that you’d never expect from a movie like that.

For those looking to use it in their setting, Duplicate is not from the 2024 Players Handbook, it's from the 3rd party sourcebook Obojima (https://obojima.com) that's a Miyazaki setting. DND Beyond defaults to enabling new 3rd party sourcebooks whenever you create a new character until you disable it. (And if you're in a campaign run by someone who has the "unlimited, everything ever released on DND Beyond" - regardless whichever campaign that character you are creating ends up in - you too will have all these books at your disposal even if you never knew about them, so double check your spell sources in their descriptions).

In general on the conversation Werewolf’s often represent transformation, duality, and repressed desires. There are some comparisons to sexual diseases on the lines of the repressed desires and how it can spread between two people at night. The modern vampire often represent fear of the unknown, exploitation, and sexuality. The later two often relates to abuse especially as thralls and spawn often are turned by force. This especially comes into play with wealth component as vampires are often depicted as wealthy and werewolves often are more “naturalistic”

The way I see it, in order to tackle the werewolf vs vampire question, one must first establish the specific lore they’re drawing from. Specifically, in answering which is worse, I’d wanna know to what extent, if at all, becoming a vampire entails losing your human soul. To a lesser but still relevant extent, Id also wanna know (among other things) if the hypothetical existed in a world where werewolves were highly persecuted by vampires (a la underworld) as well as to what extent both creatures were actively hunted by mortals. All of which is to say that imo There’s j too much differing lore out there to weigh vampires against werewolves w/o preemptively determining what lore specifically to go by

I need to info dump here; I have facts to share but I can’t remember them. The book Vampyre is where the whole ‘brooding, good looking, smooth talking, astorcracy (can’t spell)’ vampire comes from. It’s an inspiration for Batman, Dracula and if I had to guess, Strahd. Before vampires were thought of bloated creatures of the night. I’ll add more plus my sources but yeah!

Gotta say as a person who worked in whole foods: people do unhinged shit. Someone went to the meat counter, opened it, took a raw lamb piece, and left it on the shelf with nothing around it. I'd ask the wolf man to shoot me and put me outta my misery. (They let people steal but yell at us about the loss but wanted us to do...nothing? I quit when they told us we had alloted non paid time off and we'd be fired if we got sick lol)

This always gets me when I relisten! Kate's vampire character falls for a hot werewolf/vampire hybrid in Underworld! And Kevin Grevioux was not only a super hot werewolf but one of the writers. Also, everything I've ever read of vampire and werewolf traditional stories (I'm forever fascinated with folk tales and mythology and morality tales, and once wrote a Comparative Mythology paper the morning it was due about Anne Rice vs Bram Stoker vs older stories from Romania/Wallachia, I'm deep in the vampire lore) seems less about STIs and more about SA. Vampires are coercion and werewolves are blitz attacks. And the ones who survive are forever marked as unclean and shunned. That's not just STIs, that is being seen as less-than because they were "defiled" though no fault of their own I'm sure a lot of people don't agree with that, especially people who went to school for this stuff, but if you read the old stories you'll see why that was my conclusion.
