Brad Puskar

did yall record this episode in a church Murph has some sensual reverb on his voice

A Mo

:) <- me when new mixed bag

Ian Hudson

Speaking of subclasses, lil mini dungeon court amicus brief session? I’ve been dancing around an Oath of the Contract Paladin sellsword and haven’t been able to crack it…anyone have any thoughts?

Dag Swanials

Haven't even listened yet, but I know its gonna be awesome!

Summer Tribe

oh no, analysis from people who are not typically good at it. I know I'll laugh, but I'll squirm as well

kaylee w

relájate brody

Jordan Marschke

Didn't expect an Avantris shout out up top but that's rad as hell!! They have some truly excellent custom content

Billy Peake

I’m a little confused by this comment. Emily and Murph are two of the most mechanically minded players I’ve ever seen. What I like about their analysis is it’s not just a whiteroom calculation of DPR like Treantmonk or someone would do. Those analyses throw out a lot of vague things like social and RP utility in favor of purely quantifiable things that can be numerically measured and charted. Emily regularly pulls some of the biggest wins out of the bag because she can holistically look at a character sheet and tie abilities into what’s happening in the story world and environment to turn the arc of a scene in her favor. That sort of perspective is super lacking in a lot of online mechanical analysis that refuses to engage with the idea that a lot of “power” in a narrative game comes from what your mechanics give you narrative permission to do, because “narrative permission” doesn’t have any numerical mechanics tied to it, only roleplay mechanics. On a side note, while I think 2024 is a huge improvement overall, one annoyance I have with it is the removal of a lot of “narrative permission” features like the old Divine Intervention or the Background ribbon features that purely operated in narrative space. The desire to have every feature tie into a mathematical mechanic with clear rules rather than vague narrative features that give the DM or player permission to use flexible thinking to resolve a scene is a bit of a detriment to the game, IMO.

Summer Tribe

if anything they're using more of a whiteroom since they play theater of the mind, which fundamentally disregards (and they've acknowledged this) one of the biggest features of any tactical game, space. I don't much care for Treantmonk's videos but it's disingenuous to suggest he doesn't approach the social aspect of play, it's just less of a factor of his videos. I don't often hear Em or Murph break down their views on social navigation anyway either tho. I still frequently on DnD court hear them misquote or misunderstand rules, and it's been years of Murph dogging on rangers, which is crazy given that they have better stealth and CC capabilities than monks and rogues, and while comparing them to two of the worst classes of the game doesn't normally mean much, Murph has up talked both those classes plenty. And my man quite recently said Shepherd druid wasn't known to be strong. I don't even know what you mean about Emily regularly pulling out the biggest wins, on NADDPOD she plays stronger classes than the other people at her table, and there are only two other people. Yes, she plays to the table, that's great and I don't disagree she does a good job of that, but that's a distinct capability from talking about relative power levels in broader circumstances. Your suggestion about doing things outside the scope of your mechanics undermines the fact that they're playing a game, which is defined by its rules/mechanics. Them ignoring the description of whatever spell she cast to flood Funky Kong's vehicle is not some universal option at other tables. A lot of roleplay mechanics are numerical mechanics in DnD, that's how the game works

MamaMayhem - Sal Soeh, Sal Nu

The "Mortality" spell is kinda like what happens to Gabriel at the end of the 2005 Constantine movie

Zach Boles

Edge lord 4 shot in Twilight Sanctorum, please

Hostage4hire

Something that will never get old is the crew consistently lobbing softball anime info to Jake and him acting high and mighty like he already had access to said info

Wyatt H

I’ve been playing a Sinner rogue combined with a Gunslinger and i can confirm it’s sick

A. Lee. S

Emily did 560 damage in one turn on Dimension 20 and absolutely wrecked havoc on Critical Role. Her character builds are fun and destructive. I regularly check to see if she’s already built something I’m interested in playing because her version is probably awesome. They absolutely know what the strongest or right thing is and then choose to divert or not care so that things are funnier for the audience or more fun to play for them.

A. Lee. S

I am playing a Lurmen named Nurmen in SW5e in essentially the style of the cat one. I’m. THRILLED!

Scotty Beverages

As a rabid One Piece fan I appreciate Caldwell’s references and actually do think Jake would like Jinbe lol

Argonautica

I really think you guys would enjoy The Beastheart or Talent from MCDM

Phillip Englehart

Murph calling out Caldwell for tooting is straight up Hardwon “I tooted” erasure.

Doctor Ransom

Gonna be DMing a new campaign in the Crooked Moon world from Legends of Avantris and I cannot fucking wait, it’s such a sick setting filled with new spooky species and subclasses. One of the players is a Gnarlborn Path of the Experiment Barbarian and yes he’s a Treant Bane.

Blaize Gordon

OMG im so jealous of Emily talking about hades 2! I need it to come to ps5 ASAP! This episode was really fun I love these little deep dives!

Pizzapie_420

I had no idea Jake was such a one piece fan! This is big lore

Michelle

Twilight Sanctorum! Twilight Sanctorum!

Caitlin Sievert

The mix of sinner rogue, doomsday cleric, and circle of blood Druid are giving a horror X western campaign setting

Tenkura

How has nobody yet brought up (W)Rath the Aasimar Warlock of Dungeons of Drakkenheim? Warlock pact of the Old One bound to The Thing With the Writhing Tail—otherwise known as his cat, Bruce.

Neil Dutton

*SPOILER* List of classes discussed below!! 1. Barbarian, Path of the Experiment. Avantris Entertainment 2. Warlock, Exalted Assembly of the Feline Court. Chaosium Inc. 3. Rogue, The Sinner. Avantris Entertainment 4. Cleric, Apocalypse Domain. Chaosium Inc. 5. Druid, Circle of Blood. Grim Hollow, Ghostfire Gaming 6. Paladin, Oath of Revelry. Mage Hand Press

Phillip Englehart

Hmm... I used that search page and it looks like Caldwell did say it first, but it didn't gain a whole lot of traction. I might have recency bias because I just listened to the short rest where Emily gave Jake a rose for saying Hardwon Tooted...

Sam Easton

I wonder if the squad has seen Steinhardts Guide. Since they’re big on bloodborne I bet they’d love it

Evan

"Tony Tony Chopper is one of my all times" - Jake Hurwitz

Mnixon

Thank u professor Emily

Elana Danielle

this was so fun i’ve missed behind the screen/emily gives a book report (lol) i hope we get to hear the crew play some of these subclasses soon the sound sick af

Heliks

With magic ever so faintly returning to Skoldova, and Zudrick learning how to have hobbies, he should take a level of Party Paladin and be the guy playing Wonderwall at the party

Connor

Edge lord one shot!!

Kellyd

+1 for edgelord one shot, bring Cody Nightangel Walsh to naddpod

Adam!!!!!

oath of revelry is peak bon frere behavior

FuzzedOutRabbit

Your a saint could not figure out how to spell chaosium

Mich Blackie

Hang on, is this Mixed Bag about… D&D?

El Jefe

We demand that “Edgelord of the Rings” see our feeds at some point in the future!

Mich Blackie

I mean, picking a blind fave from One Piece is risky and he could have done much worse 😂

Mich Blackie

Honestly Caldwell could have done him really dirty but he picked two great characters

Grass

This was a rad episode I love this!

thatoneguy

I'd be interested in doing a View Crew of the first few episodes of One Piece or that movie that collapses everything up to Arlong Park. Zoro is very Jake coded.

John Allen

Jake said Mortality sounds like the ending of a movie, and it kinda is how Avatar The Last Airbender ends, with Aang taking away Fire Lord Ozai's firebending forever

Vivus Ignis

Tysm! Came to the comments exactly for this! My hero!

SockRat

Im so happy they talked about the Path of The Experiment barbarian subclass! Im playing Avantris' new supplement the crooked moon and I've had a blast playing a plague born (rat) barbarian!

David Tatarczuk

The cat themed Warlock reminds me of "Scooby Doo on Zombie Island"

Sand Panda

Yay! We all want edged!

Bubble-gun 🔫💖

Murph and Em - check out the graphic novel series “Monstress” by Majorie Liu. There’s a whole race of cats in it with their own goddess and everything! Would be really good inspo for this warlock class :)

Zeon Liberation

These are like the cats from “Monster” the comic not the Charlize Theron film.

Zeon Liberation

Also, Mortality is a bit reminiscent of the end of AtLA, and even LoK with Amon and blood bending.

Blue Bee

Shout to Chris from Treant Monk's Temple, he did a lot of design work for the Chaosium supplement and was actually the one who came up with the nine lives feature of the cat warlock, he has a couple videos on his channrl about it!

Lyron

Hey Emily. If you ever decide to field test your subclass picks the Marvel equivalent to Catwoman, Black Cat, might be your jam since her abilities run off of bad luck.

Clever Innuendo

I would totally flavor the Doomsday Cleric as "Oh, the world is *absolutely* going to end... but not by *you*, blasphemer!"

aster

realllly want to play a plasmoid blood druid where the blood is reflavored as my goop

Logan Carpenter

I would love to hear Murphs playlist. His references are all over the place and now the Social D nod is intriguing

Ellie P

2024 barb rage lasts for up to 10 minutes now I believe!

John EldenRing

As a huge Avantris fan, shout out to stardust rhapsody, was awesome to hear some of these crooked moon subclasses. A crossover of 4 v 4 Fleen flell could be an amazing and simple crossover

Pancakes

it is SO funny to have just finished listening to Blazing Babe again and immediately start this ep where they're talking about Bane and then it has an emanating stink feature, "I was born in the fart."

Mthunzi Ramphele

The end game "mortality" spell is kind of reminescent of Aang stripping lire Lord Ozai of his fire bending at the end of Avatar: Last Airbender!

fineterra art

It might be because I'm just now catching up with the Unsleeping City, but the Exalted Assembly of the Feline Court made me immediately think of La Gran Gata

Janaga

I would love for Jake to play that barbarian and have the fumes and just give a soft "scuse me"

Georgia

ohh my god i would LOVE to have murph get to play a cat-domain warlock!! warlock was my guess lol on my knees for a cute emily oneshot where we get to briefly explore new subclasses, pathfinder style (guys i miss cinnamon and co so bad)

Zyrian

This was fantastic! I love when y'all geek out about game mechanics

emjemme

I feel like you could use the cat warlock as a DMPC. The party meets them after they help a cat and it turns out the cats blessed them with the assistance of their servant.

Sebastian Lecha

All I can think of is a new Hot Boys Summer w/ Carl returning as a Paladin of Revalry.

Atmospheric Ruler

Omg I can’t believe they acknowledge legends of avantris they’re so cool and the crooked moon is an amazing campaign

Lauren

I love these mixed bags! So many cool ideas :)

Katie P.

I really like the Avantris subclasses. As a paladin girlie, the Oath of Castigation looks really fun

Robert McDaniel

Cat patron and Sophia Lee not mentioned once 😭

Christopher Samson

Sorry I am late to the party but I was SO happy listening to this Mixed Bag. I work for Avantris Entertainment so I was wondering at the start of the episode if any subclasses from The Crooked Moon were going to be mentioned. Was so delighted to hear you all give shouts to Avantris & our content at the top of the episode. Hope you all can give Experiments Barb and Sinner Rogue a test drive soon! Also definitely want to build a Subway The End Is Nigh sign spinning Doomsday Cleric so badly now haha

J. Gro

I said it before and I'll say it again - paladins got robbed in the 2024 edition. Hard disagree with Murph that making divine smite a bonus action is fine!! (Plus, lay on hands now only cures poison, not disease. Boo!)

Nikolaus Cox

Turning someone mortal is actually how they killed Imhotep in The Mummy (1999, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weiss). After reading a particular spell Imhotep appears unchanged, and his smug smiles tells us he believes the spell did not work. But then he is laid low in the next moment by simply getting stabbed, because the spell stripped him of his immortality.
