Thanks Mr murph

Null

I haven’t listened to this one yet, I try to keep them in order. Did they do a Dungeon Court episode? Or are these bonus cases from a previous Dungeon Court?

Null

Oh sweet, I didn’t miss it. Thank you! I was worried

joel

Ah yes, my new favorite Isekai TPK: My Fartificer Re:inCARSnated as a Level 1 Human Man!

Kellyd

Sorry to the cleric but I think you were kind of being a brat lol you didn't have ANY idea what kind of aide would be helpful? If I'm your DM that tells me that you're just asking to ask and I'd wonder if you're paying attention to the campaign and your party members. why do I have to give you something that you may or may not want or need?

Kingzley Sparkman

I love that whenever it's been a very stressful work week, the Patreon is like "Dungeon Court?"

sam s.

why didn’t anyone razz jake for saying scount basster denny :/

rosebramblewolf

Yeah the phrasing was like "I never remembered to do it until this fight" which makes me feel like this person is not invested in roleplaying at all? Feels like something a pure numbers min-maxer would say.

rosebramblewolf

Giving Scout Master Denny a glock and saying "you'll know when to use this" is a truly admirable chaos gremlin move.

rosebramblewolf

Part of DMing is learning to take tiny Ls so your players can have those Ws.

Sabrina

Thank you for your ruling judges 😌😌

34:52 murph fell down a well but then climbed back up really fast

Hannah Whaley

fuck me the joel question was the funniest one we’ve had in a while. bonus points that it was a legitimate question too

Vincent

Car-mic rebirth

Carter Milius

“Reincarnated, but as yourself”…so isekaied?

Scottee

I usually assume a case is real even when it really probably isn't, but... C'mon, Sabrina, your GM really spent an HOUR narrating two epilogues? An HOUR? And nobody said a word? If we're gonna do creative writing we gotta keep verisimilitude in mind!

Angie the asshole

someone tell murph and Caldwell that the Jetsons live action is getting made

Ben Walter

Hasagun Joel being told you know when the time is right and then immediately firing a gun at the first enemy is so funny, perfect outcome IMO 💀💀💀

Mosesf

Man, the Denny voice is GONE. Rip Denny, may he missed not for his courage, but for the laughs we made at his expense.

Kat

Thank you! Also it was explicitly during downtime, not during combat like the hosts seemed to assume, so there's not an easy suggestion for the dm to make like "mass cure wounds" as murph suggested. Literally this player is sitting at a campfire whining "help me!!!" And the dm is supposed to come up with something that doesn't spoil upcoming plot or battles as they near the end of the campaign?? Like help you with *what* you're in downtime!

rollinginthecrits

To the TPK submitter - Was this a homebrew world by any chance? Is it possible your DM felt like you were laughing at him and not with him by joking so much? Alternatively - did the Paladin join in the goofing before the TPK? Is it possible the Paladin was acting as the Grima Wormtongue and whispering in the DM’s ear that you guys weren’t taking it seriously enough? Not that they’re right, I just wanna know so bad

Eat Your Art Veggies

Swarm of abyssal chickens dodging as one but attacking individually has big Oscar's Oasis energy.

benji b

Can confirm he is chaos gremlin. Among his other antics, he attempted to steal Corgin babies to raise as his own

Stations & Starships

Omg this sticky hand jujitsu talk unlocked a core memory of the Hotshots Part Deux sticky hands candy boxing goof

Rodri86

Technically, there is no original DnD court this week. Instead, it was an Adventure Book Theatre and these cases are for patreon supporters.

Chef Julie B

Cabbage Man is e👏🏻ssen👏🏻tial👏🏻 to Avatar. He’s the Desmond-ian constant of that universe, a la LOST.

thiswayjose

I know y’all record ahead of time so I’m probably super late with this suggestion; but Hot Boy Haunted Mansion?

Lia

No harm, no fowl

Bryce Peterson

Barberrier, or maybe Derrierian. Fullmetal Alchemist is another good example of how to balance levity/brevity. The DM from that case is crazy haha.

Jessica

Hear me out: humans, particularly fast ones, are cars world cryptids

Lauri Savilahti

"I ask for nothing" ok you get nothing...

CSN

Joel the confident idiot reminds me of the guy who busts out of the back room in Pulp Fiction and unloads his revolver, entirely missing Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta, who then light him up.

CSN

Oops, all bonus!

Mr. Dude Sky

I’m kinda with the DM and Paladin That TPK’d the party. I think home DnD is better when it’s more serious and with a lot less jokes. I know this is a comedy podcast and it’s their lives but I truly think less levity is better. The party was asked to get more serious and it sounds like they didn’t. If another player is going out of their way to cause this as well then Thats party must have gone too far. I just feel like we aren’t getting the full picture from a lot of submitters.

Ivo the Mad Sorcerer

Dude, you need to break the tension with levity in order to build weight. If you never let there be any jokes and are just super serious all the time you get a zach snyder movie, if you let the characters make jokes while still taking the world seriously you get Star Wars. There need to be troughs and valleys so that when things get actually serious, you can tell the difference.

Mr. Dude Sky

Not a Snyder or Star Wars guy so you’ll have to excuse me if I don’t really get the comparison. It’s just in my experience being that I get so much more out of TTRPGs when they are played 90% serious and 10% unserious. Maybe I’m just kinda humorless but all the levity gets boring really quick in a home game. The sessions where it’s jokey even 50% of the time get kinda lost to the aether, but the times where it’s serious all the time are the ones that we bring up and talk about in the best light. The serious games are the ones that actually make us feel something. The jokes might be a spike of amusement but it doesn’t have any staying power. This is all for home games. Professional comedians like the 2 Crew make it work or I wouldn’t be paying for it.

Ivo the Mad Sorcerer

Alright man I hear what you're saying, and I can't disagree with personal experience, if that's the balance that works in your games I'm all for it. My only point is that from a classical storytelling point of view, you need contrast for a tone to stand out. Serious moments hit harder when you know that this world is capable of moments of lightness, just like how triumphant victories feel better when they come out of what seemed like a hopeless defeat, or how moments of action hit harder after moments of stillness. (And about the dnd court thing specifically I find it crazy that the DM thought it was appropriate to intentionally tpk because they were making any jokes at all). Still, that rocks if it's what works in your games, hell yeah man.

Kellyd

Ya and they said "so I didn't roll" not "dm didn't let me roll", I'm really surprised at the generous read that the submission did not earn lmao

Calic Tolentino

I mean you are only talking from your own preference. You're kinda ignoring the fact that it is stated the rest of the group is very unserious and focuses on being chill and funny. If the DM didn't want to run the campaign anymore, that is valid. If they communicated that like an adult instead of colluding with the paladin for a TPK, it would be just childish. And with all due respect, who are you to say that the best way to play dnd is to be 90% serious? do you expect that the millions of players to have the same play style?

Mr. Dude Sky

I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the DM because I don’t trust that the submitter was being entirely forthright with how they were acting. So they might have been TPK worthy. After many years of playing and being at many tables and having many players I’ve noticed a pattern. When I run a campaign or one shot for players that are outside my usual tables they always tell me how my games are some of the best they have played and it’s an experience where they actually felt something more besides some vague amusement. They tell me how they felt like what they did and said mattered and that they felt like they were actually part of something. They would tell me how they wished their home games were like mine. After hearing that enough I would ask what the differences were and in the lists the same one would pop up every single time, too many jokes. It’s a pattern I can’t unsee now. I think having more jokes works if you are a professional comedian like the 2 Crew and other live play groups, but 99% of players aren’t professional comedians. It just doesn’t hold together the same at the home game. I think a lot of players would have a better experience if their games were more serious.

Davybouy

Actually, being honest as a DM is paramount. DM should have been direct with their players instead of lashing out. This take is genuinely baffling, "I like games with less levity, death was the right solution" is wild.

Gearbox

Right. This is similar to when someone says "I want to persuade the guard to pet us through" and the DM asks "What do you say?" and the players just giving up rather than be creative. It's not bad DMing to ask your players to play and roleplay in the roleplaying game.

Sprout Reads

can't believe they didn't latch onto this

Mr. Dude Sky

From the case it sounded like the DM was direct with their players but a few just couldn’t keep it together. From the fact that another player helped out with the TPK kinda points me to the submitter not being entirely truthful with how they behaved with the DM. The take makes perfect sense to me. A couple of players don’t want to play the game so rocks fall everyone dies. The DM and Paladin get to go and play their game in hats more serious and has some legs and the submitter can sit around with no DnD because they couldn’t stop joking and ruining it for other people.

Adam!!!!!

how does any of that excuse tpking the whole party?

Kevin Engelkamp

I don't enjoy breaking up the release of concurrently recorded DnD Courts. You guys treat them as one episode from a continuity of conversation POV, tightly referencing things that happened in the same recording session

Kevin Engelkamp

If you listen to the last two DND courts back to back you can tell they were recorded the same day

Calic Tolentino

So you're only saying that from your own experience. I have years of experiences as well and run both serious campaigns and more chill campaigns, depending on the players, cuz I actually hear what the players have to say and yet my players love it. We have talk about shit and dicks, and are also able to cry and endure pain. But what is baffling to me is the selfish point of view that your way is the best way. Someone who actually knows how to interact with the growing population of TTRPG players or just any social gathering of people, that approaches needs to be pliable and fluid. But you say only your way is the best one, sorry, but that's not how interacting with people works, lmao. and seems to be looked at through biased lenses. Like I don't doubt your players love it. and a good portion of the community does. but saying what you have said smells like your blowing your own dick bud. Just to defend, someone who is childish enough not to communicate that they won't want to run anymore.

Kellyd

What are you referring to in this episode? They've been doing this since early d&d court days, even across mixed bags and campaign short rests. Figured all the listeners had gotten used to it after 7 years lol The cases they picked for this episode are directly from the comments of the submission request post from a few days prior, so it definitely wasn't recorded the same day as the last d&d court

Mr. Dude Sky

After talking to enough people and hearing what they have to say I just have to look around and say “What’s goin on at the home games to cause this reaction?” The though line always ends up being the same, too many jokes. After years of these conversations and what my players tell me my ego has expanded to gigantic proportions. My head has swelled to the size of the Goodyear blimp and according to many, my shit does not in fact stink. I set out as a humble DM and now I have trumpets to signal my every dice roll. Idk you DM how you want and I’ll DM how I want but ultimately the DM controls the tone and there is no game without the DM.

Hugo Wull

Op doesn’t have the capacity to compartmentalize a reference to Lightning McQueen I guess.

Hugo Wull

I sued my wife in DND court and we had a good bit of fun when she heard the case.

Reincars-mator'd*

Gamma Ghoul

Why call it Bonus Cases...? Just call it DnD Court if you're just tacking it on after 8-Bit Book Club, they're two different things :/

Roy Prishkulnik

Just a head's up for any DM listening: the DMG (both 2014's and 2024's) has rules for Mobs such as the 20 foul fowls. I don't know if that's what Murph means by "making swarms" but it lets you handle everything without rolling any d20! Combine this with prerolling damage or using the average score to make combat a breeze

Ross Wright

I came immediately to the 2crew to let them know I discovered a prince game on xbox

Chase

Except that they verifiably weren't because these cases were submitted on or after October 13. You can go check the post calling for cases yourself. Not that it would really matter if they were anyway

Mike

Joel could’ve also delayed his initiative to let the other players act. The party could’ve told him to wait until we give you the signal. They opened the door, and got mad that something they don’t like walked in. Players fault without the shadow of a doubt

Summer Tribe

it's times like Em saying that 20 abyssal chickens might be too strong for a 15th level character is what makes me scoff at them having power level discussions. SCOFF I say

Verdigree

I'm just guessing, but there may gave been a fundamental misunderstanding of what a "tank" is on the DM's part, in World of Warcraft and FF14, they're designed to draw aggro, be the target of ALL enemies and be able to survive, Dungeons and Dragons doesn't have these assumptions baked in, being turn based means the action economy can turn against them. There is no "taunt" in D&D besides Compelled Duel, and that doesn't actually force targets to choose you, it debuffs them if they pick someone else

Rachel the Freckled ADHDer

I had a half-orc character who carried chicken wings COVERED in sauce in her bag at all times. I even took time in-game (during down times) to cook them and refill her bag. She would hand them out to EVERYONE. It was not sanitary or hygenic, but I almost always rolled high enough for them to be tasty. Her clothes and hands were also always covered in sauce. I miss her.

J. Gro

To anyone who thinks you can't enjoy gravity and levity simultaneously, all I have to say is "A Crown of Candy." Case in point.

Walker Thurman

The monk’s forever DM is CRAZY but the wording of flurry of blows is that immediately after you attack, you can use your bonus action to make the unarmed strikes, which isn’t that different than moving between multiple strikes on one attack action

Nitzan Harel

The TPK DM, case 2, should run a game for a bunch of kids as punishment.

Katie Wilde

I think there might have been a glitch in how the episode appeared to some people. These bonus cases have nothing to do with 8bit book club. They are recorded right after the main dungeon court cases, same day. The main episode goes to the main page, bonus cases are only available to paid patreon subscribers. Hope this explanation doesn't come off as rude. Again, you're not the only one who commented something that makes me think things didn't show up on your app the way they're meant to.

Gamma Ghoul

It didn't come off as rude at all, thanks for the explanation, but in regards to this specific episode, would you be able to give me the title of the main dungeon court episode this is supposed to be a follow up from? Thanks 😊

Epwna | Jess

Judging from the Lightning McQueen mention and the dates, seems like this could be the bonus for "D&D Court: Cars PCs, Overly Engaged Players, and Razzing Rights" since that one only had a main episode.

Sean Zenitram

Buffalow blow is a top tier pun.

Summer Tribe

there are other means of forcing an enemy to attack you, but they're usually casterly means. TableTop Builds covered it in depth pretty well

Drew Worth

I have limited experience with home games but when I ran them they always had a decent balance. Let players screw around but if they aren't taking things seriously there are ways in game to basically say "Do I have your attention now?" You don't have to make them be serious. But I personally have a sketchy feeling about the submitter, the case seemed like it was skewed to be sympathetic to the players and I get the vibe the players were being rude and disrespectful with their jokes and the DM got fed up. I don't know of any DM who would murder a party just because they made puns.

HeyYeah

Mostly just the resolute way they say "the game has to be fun" just makes me want to kms
