I'm very excited to dig in! One of the biggest pieces of childhood nostalgia for me is flipping through toy catalogs.

Chris Roman

When I was a kid my mom took my sister and I shopping at KIDS R US and the entire time I just filled out entry forms for the Super Toy Run. I didn’t win, but I did win 2nd place, TWICE. Somehow. Feels like that shouldn’t have happened. But two giant mysterious boxes showed up at my house weeks later with a winners certificate and a ton of Furbies and interactive E.T.s. Still not sure why E.T. was part of that but his finger would light up when you talked to him!

Bunnarchist

This type of mixed bag is always my favorite, it's just pure chaos in a good way

Silky

I couldn't picture a lot of what they were talking about because I'm not American and was also a baby in 1995 - so I tried to find a copy of this catalog online. I've only been able to find the 1997 edition: https://archive.org/details/Toys-R-Us-Ad-1997-10/page/n39/mode/1up It has some of the same products they're talking about though!

CommodoreBlue

$130 for a game is what you pay for “deluxe” versions of big games today. And that’s just the complete game being packaged cleverly. So I guess that’s about right.

lukekinn

I remeber being a kid and my dad would put the lawn mower battery into the power wheels and just make them move like crazy

Clever Innuendo

Coming Zone (or Comix Zone, whichever you prefer) was amazing for the 5 minutes you'd be alive before the game cheesed the fuck out of you, Caldwell. A modern reboot could be awesome, though.

Sam Taz

This is amazing!! Where did you find the catalog? I want to do this with some friends.

Erica H

I absolutely had Enchanted Palace and I fully forgot about it until Emily brought it up. What a magical restored memory!

Stefan UrKILL (Figgy)

Uh uh I have to call BS on Murph metagaming to get that DK t-shirt!

thatoneguy

So I have a distinct memory of listening to AOL kids radio where someone called in to request Stairway to Heaven and the dj said it was too long to play the whole way through. So now I just get to imagine that kid as Caldwell.

Ro

Unless I zoned out and missed it, are we seriously walking out of that shop without a single polly pocket?!?! The under the sea one with the sparkly jelly sea was so dreamy

Cierra Collett

This is now my icebreaker question for the rest of time. It used to be "Whats your baseball walkout song?" But this, this is peak.

PeanutGodApollo

Its crazy how fun this episode was. Such a silly concept but so fun

Courtney F.

I cannot describe how incredibly validating it has been to hear "always wanted a power wheels, never got one" from people my age whom I respect and appreciate so much. It's honestly healed my inner child a bit to hear y'all say exactly how I felt for years. I am not alone. 🥹 Haven't finished the ep but needed to say this. Love this concept, love y'all, happy hoglidays 💙

Mortimer Lunch

Jake with absolutely stellar choices. Won the draft. Caldwell with the most Caldwell of choices. Of course he got a toilet. 😂

Henrique Scott

Had this on my PC growing up. With the amount I played it I dont think I made it past level one. "Give me the respect I deserve" rings in my ears nightly

Clever Innuendo

Those damn hooded henchmen with the hook swords! Truly an example of the Sega sound chip being ahead of its time.

Ken

1995 was the release of Power of the Force 2 Star Wars toys by Kenner/Hasbro. I was so thrilled getting weirdly buff versions of Luke, Han, Vader, Leia, and Chewie. And I got TIE Fighter and X-Wing Later on I got all the other ones, including Boba Fett and Slave I and so much more. That is the kid I was in 1995, didn't care at all about video games, it was the brand new Star Wars toys all the way baby.

Brian Edwards

This is so cute. "They were Tubthumping!" Never change, Caldwell.

Jay Taylor

The Game Gear took SIX AA batteries!

Kellyd

I forgot today was only Friday, I should have waited to listen and now I'm in naddrawal

Cosmopunk

The sneer in Murphs voice re: Game gears took me out 🤣

Ian McTarsney

“It looked good for the 10 minutes you got to play it” SHADAYYYYYY

Zarina Munoz

I'm guessing they're not clipping the coupons but for sure they could've saved on their Power Wheels

Amanda

New earworm: “Dude, where are your yucks?”

Chef Julie B

Hell yes. I was 8 in 1995, and remember getting these in the mail. I’d spend hours circling stuff I wanted in sharpies; similar energy to the Scholastic Book Fair flyers getting passed out the week before they arrive at your school.

Thomas Rawls

yeah it’s 100% in my vocabulary now

froggy

after listening to this episode, my phone now shows me hikiddo 24v kids ride on car amazon ads 🫡 thank you for your hard work two crew!!

Kerri

If Murph was truly meta gaming, he could have gotten his other item, considering the Donkey Kong country 2 game (and the t shirt) technically only required a down payment of 10$. He could have done some chores or shoveled some sidewalks or something, idk. Unless that doesn’t count, idk I don’t make the rules, I just love the fine print.

Jack

I believe Sam Riegel from CR got to do the Toys R Us sweepstakes as a kid

Ryanne Wallace

Surprised Caldwell didn't go for the Pico that let kids animate their own cartoons

Balnor’s Best Friend - Steve

Talk about nostalgia! I wanted almost all of these toys. This was the year my parents got us an NES from the neighbors who upgraded their kid to a PlayStation (we all couldn’t believe he got one!) so we actually had to wait until Xmas night while our parents did the swap mid-day once the PS was opened. After seeing these prices, now I know why! That said, we didn’t even care it was the older system because they also gave us ALL their games (plus it was still an upgrade from dad’s Atari)

Balnor’s Best Friend - Steve

Only the coolest rich kids had power wheels. Could you imagine pulling up in that Jeep? Maybe do a little skid when you stopped… You were definitely not alone; I remember going to a birthday party where a kid and his sister EACH had one. I thought they were royalty or something

Balnor’s Best Friend - Steve

“Naddrawal”: the feeling of refreshing your podcast feed even though it’s not Thursday yet and there’s zero chance of a new episode.

Doctor Ransom

Can confirm as a kid who had the Game Gear, yes Murph is 100% correct. Playing it ruled for the 15 minutes of battery life, but I least I could play in the dark. But yeah, battery life was hella-ass.

Mr. Micholaus

I used my birthday money on Batman Forever for Super Nintendo when I was 11 years old and it was so bad that I cried.

Mr. Micholaus

My brother, my cousins, and I were supposed to go to Six Flags when I was about 9, and I got sick and couldn’t go. My dad came home with a Game Gear and Sonic 2 and Batman Returns, which ruled. We quickly sprung for the AC adaptor since otherwise it’d be dead in like an hour.

Courtney F.

I went to Catholic school for my elementary years so all of my friends had them. When my parents couldn't afford to send us to that school anymore and we went to public school, I was "too old" (and afraid of being uncool or afraid of them knowing my family was poor lol) to ask other kids if they ever longed for a power wheels they never got 😂 BTW both kids having their own power wheels is crazy, maybe they were royalty 🤔😂

Cody Blevins

Emily reading description of Hot Wheels set, Caldwell says under his breath "holy shit". Sent me

CSN

OMG, the core memory of calling in to a radio station and getting rejected trying to request a song! Times before the internet were BRUTAL.

Kellyd

They linked the pdf in the post!

CSN

Looking back and realizing, I was yearning for Powerwheels and there were kids out there whose parents were taking them mountain biking and dirt biking from that age! Could I have been trusted with that kind of kinetic energy? Almost certainly not.

Doctor Ransom

Oh yeah best believe I had the AC adapter for that thing, also my big brother got the Nomad for Christmas and that thing actually was amazing. The only game we played happened to be Comix Zone. Caldwell is missing out, it’s a sick game but it’s the hardest Sega game ever made.

JimJam

Based on everyone's haul, I'm definutely going over to Emily's for the sleep over. There's nothing 10 year old me would want more than an afternoon of playing the Enchanted Palace boardgame, watching hot wheels explode, and sitting passenger princess while being driven at 5 MPH past all the slow neighborhood losers!!

SirJakJak

Hi 2 Crew! Just saw Murph and Emily at The Great Charles Dickens Christmas Faire. I'm a tender at The Mermaid Pub! Didn't want to bother, but wanted to wish Happy Christmas and just thank you for all you've done for me as a writer and storyteller.

Mortimer Lunch

Also so very apropos for Emily to break the rules her husband established lol. Would’ve loved to have heard what Murph had gotten had he reneged too!

Skywalkaa12

This kinda got me really sad because of the nostalgia 😭 I miss child-like wonder and amusement

John Hartigan

My sister had a Sega Genesis Portable growing up. I really enjoyed playing Sonic on it

Kristen W

Loved this episode! I am absolutely turning this into a price as right style game for my family's Christmas this year. Thanks for posting the PDF!

Danny P

Surprised Caldwell didn’t get the pico that “lets kids animate their own cartoons”! My guess is it’s a proto kidpix style animation? I used to loveeee doing that as a kid

CSN

I don't care what they say, I enjoyed many an hour in my Virtual Boy playing Galactic Pinball and Mario Tennis. So what if my eyes bled a little?

Stations & Starships

Common misconception about mousetrap... you set the trap up AS you play. Moving spaces grants you more parts to add to the trap. It's still not that fun though 😄

Ziel R.

That board game Emily picked kinda Antoine Ego'd me back to childhood and I was reminded of a board game I had that was also kind of a proto DND. It was like a dungeon crawl with little minis of players and monsters. All I really remember was there was a big manticore mini. It was like featured on the cover. It was very hard to get anyone in my family interested in playing so I don't recall if I ever actually played it but I do know I spent a lot of time painting minis.

Fraser Connell

You can straight up still buy the hot wheels cross cross toy in shops today!

Grasse Biche

Astérix being called Belgian vikings is brutal

Marniekins

Emily’s hot wheels with the Statue of Liberty makes me think of chainsawman

xatlern

Obsessed with the idea of someone making a 5e dungeon crawl based off of Enchanted Palace. That would be such a fun one shot.

Shane C

I was run over by a Power Wheel when I was 3 years old so those things are dead to me

Frank K

I'm sorry I gotta make a stand here. The Sega Nomad fuckin ruled. I was dying listening to this, the Sega Nomad didn't get hot, it had an AC plugin for long car rides in the back seat, the screen was great. I played the Sega Nomad, doin Phantasy Star 4 and Road Rash 2 and Wonder Boy for hours on end. I need to state again. It fuckin ruled. It was one of the best handhelds I ever partook in.

K C

I can’t believe nobody got Legos. Also Emily and Jake were the best shoppers.

Kay Deane

I’m so grateful you posted the catalogue. I couldn’t envision the bounce pod and there is no trace online of anything like that ever having existed 😂

Nickolas Harbaugh

As someone who had the hot wheels crash track, it was as incredible as you’re imagining it to be.

Gearbox

It's killing me that there's no Lego in that catalog! That's all I would have picked.

Sam s

i have my dads old game gear still lmao as a kid i’d play sonic and mortal kombat on it

Cianistarle

Those prices were more affordable because people had a LOT more disposable income.

Georgia

this really takes me back to getting run over by our barbie jeep in the backyard

Tayci Stallings

One of my favorite board games was 13 Dead End Drive. You had to build this mansion and survive to get your rich Aunts inheritance. I'm an only child so I played that game so much (by myself).

Lucia V.

This was one of my favourite mixed bags

Caitlin C.

Look. This is a really fun episode. But if you do it again, you have to ban video game systems. You all already talk about video games all the time, I wanted to hear more descriptions of ridiculous 90s toys. EMILY HAD THE RIGHT IDEA. everyone should have led with an Enchanted Castle pick.

Aster Ellis

When I was little Kraft (of mac and cheese fame) ran a sweepstakes, the winners of which would go on some sort of trip to a space center. My mother was very careful to tell us we would almost certainly have no chance of getting anything from it, but my sister and I were adamant we at least give it a chance. On our first try we won a second-place prize, which was an astronaut costume. Needless to say we were incredibly annoying for the rest of that contest and did not win anything else

Valencia Nix

The best part of radio contests nowadays is that no one enters them. I won an all expenses paid trip to Bonnaroo two years ago from one of my local ones 😆

Lilli of the bog

Everything was better before smart phones. Like I hate to be that person but the phones have really hollowed out everything.

Bomberman64

Am i crazy or is the Mixed bag missing collection on patreon a lot of these episodes?

Neil Dutton

Had no idea this was here until it was just mentioned on the short rest

Neil Dutton

Kids toys are just awful now. Either just nostalgia bait for adults, horrible versions of 80s/90s toys or blind boxes. As much as the 80s was an explosion or commercial pumped toys the toys were still...fun.

Grass

Emily “I love to learn vocabulary” Axford wow you have never captured my heart more. 😍
