Regarding the Birthday Backlash, my quibble was Murph trying to use Lord of the Rings as an example about how fantasy doesn’t have birthdays. The story starts with a double birthday party for Bilbo and Frodo, and Sméagol’s descent into Gollum also began on his birthday as well. He literally picked the worst fantasy series to argue that birthdays are unimportant.

Regarding the 5 hour long session and people dropping off - some people legit can’t socialize or engage for that long. I used to run a game with friends and one friend had ADHD and it was like, exactly at the 3.5 hour mark I would see her start to drop off. She had a lot of fun, was engaged, up until that point. She wasn’t the only one, she was just the person who it was the most obvious. So sessions became 4 hours (with 30 mins of that being for food)

Like it's so weird to complain about someone coming clean about a lie right? They talk about how like they can't trust someone if they know they lie, but like you can't trust people even if you don't know? Wouldn't you rather people just tell you every time they lie to you? I think its mostly about not ruining the smoke and mirrors of DMing so you can provide your players with a sense of immersion and not take the stakes away from it. Like, lying in good faith to make it a better experience for everyone. I think the DM either does lie if they cheat (though they shouldn't cheat, they don't even Have to, just homebrew it in advance), or doesn't cheat at all; so in a way lying to cheat and then coming clean about it is counterproductive and not selfless in any direction, they did cheat for their own benefit and then didn't even attempt to preserve their players' sense of trust, thus making it a doubly deflating experience for everyone, since now that trust is damaged/broken.

Preserving the players sense of trust would just be a second lie. They just shouldn't be lying. Think about this: if that person hadn't come clean then the sense of trust would be preserved even though the person is a liar. Would you rather play with a liar you don't know is a liar or a liar who will tell you they're a liar and where they lied? The former genuinely isn't trustworthy, the latter is because they literally are telling you about their lies

Yeah... I ran three, eight hour sessions in a row when I was in the military because our command structure didn't schedule enough flights and we got stuck for 5 extra days. Even with a captive and motivated audience we had 3 or 4 people cycle out. At the end of the third day I was completely tapped out of pulling ideas out of my ass for the group to play and it unraveled because we were all a little sick of it at that point. Anyway, pay attention to your player's attention spans if you want to play with them again.

Are you by chance autistic? My sister is autistic and has a similarly strict, hard-line, black and white stance on lying. You either are always truthful or you’re a LIAR. We’ve had similar arguments a number of times. (To be clear, this isn't a judgement call, just different ways brains work) Personally, I want you to lie to me about little things if it will make my experience better, or just make me feel better. Not, like, if you fudge every roll or you’re cheating on me or something, but do tell me you like my new shirt or pretend you didn’t change some HP in a way that makes an encounter more enjoyable. Things that really don’t matter but lubricate social interactions.

I've been DM to many people who treat D&D combat like an autobattler so I'm kind of inclined to side with jello DM. Two cubes is probably too much but it can be really frustrating to DM when your players' only strategy is to move to the nearest enemy and attack. Sometimes you gotta retreat and regroup, lay an ambush or a trap, use the terrain to your advantage, etc. Two gelatinous cubes in a locked room is certain death but two gelatinous cubes in a long hallway is certain victory if you play your advantage.

The gelatinous cube thing is freaking sending me into orbit, they’re making it sound harder than it is, Emily made it sound like 15 feet per turn is really fast too I ran a naddpod inspired monster madness and one of my players drafted the cube. Indeed, it was hard-ish to kill, but it was so freaking slow that challenge rating 1/8 monsters could just easily avoid it throughout the entire conflict To me it just sounds like that party wasn’t very creative, which… DJ Khalid and shrek? I’m not too surprised Also of course it comes out that Murph has had birthdays, the lousy hypocrit (jk)

Very well said, it’s good to try and be observant about that I’ve also run into the issue where just one player can only play for a couple hours, but everyone else, myself included, is ready to lock in and play for 4+ hours (I heard 5 hours and laughed a little, because to me that’s like base level, I’d go for another 3 hours easy) and it can be hard to try and structure the entire game to cater to only one person In this case sounds like the whole table was feeling done though
