a lot of DnD doesn't work with theater of the mind. it's a tactical rpg that's largely position based, I'm not sure why people choose to play it without positioning when there are so many other ttrpgs out there

1. I must know what Sir Captain Teenypetals' bunny is named. 2. If you want an "amnesia" character, look for a module called The Demolished Ones, using the Fate system. Your characters start with no memory and you build them as you go by "remembering" skills that you have as they become useful. Could easily work as a one or two-shot!

I think the alignments are really useful with the deities because they have lost the ability to develop. Chaotic and Lawful really adds depth and breadth beyond good/neutral/evil. Love you guys. I literally spent all day refreshing the feed yesterday!!!

Obligatory love the podcast and the short rests are worth the wait every time! That said, I’m here for the alignment discussion! I like to use neutral in my games as not caring strongly about that metric but care about something different that also has polarity. So if you are neutral on good and evil, you care about something other than morality more than the morality of your actions. If you are neutral on chaotic and lawful, you care more about something else than about order and freedom. Example, I’m playing a chaotic neutral wizard who cares about advancing knowledge more than he cares about whether it was gained morally or immorally. I could be the opposite though, and be a Luddite instead. To me it’s important that the new axis also have two ends to scale toward. Likewise, I have some elves in a world I dm who don’t care so much about law or freedom, but do very much care about the wild spaces of the world being maintained and expanded even at the cost of more traditional civilization.

I totally did a Jason borne thing with one of my players in my campaign! I had a friend who I really wanted to play and he wasn't sure so I talked him into coming to our 1st session. We ended up rolling him a character that night (wild magic sorcerer) before everyone else got there so naturally he had no backstory. I told him not to worry about it. The first time he went to roll a history check I revealed to him that his earliest memory was standing outside the tavern when session 1 started which spooked the hell out of him. Later he got exposed to some toxic mist and he had a flashback to a memory of being experimented on like Deadpool before he got his mutant powers. As A result of being exposed to the mist he went berserk on the rest of the party and I gave him a level 20 stat sheet and he went full bucky Barnes on the group. That's where we left off. Next session he is going to snap out of it and have no memory of fighting the party but will retain the memory of being experimented on. It's been a ton of fun revealing little bits of backstory to him as he goes along. Surprise proficiencies and strange abilities he's good at. His wild magic surges are also a result of being experimented on. It's been great!

You guys wondered if there was a cross between a fighter and an archer. For fun, build out an assassin with the sharpshooter feat. Imagine hiding in the rafters, popping out, using Assassinate and Sneak Attack from a LONG range, then disappearing again in the same turn. It's devastating.

Taking cover for partial cover and 3/4 cover is such an incredible asset to both players and monsters, but it's just not really something that works with theater of the mind games unless you really dive into what's in and around the battle arena.
