Very late to this episode but as an archaeologist it’s been fun reading the comments and seeing how many of us there are here!

Hannah

Chiming in 5 months later as an archaeologist. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard the archaeology/paleontology mix-up, it would have paid for my Master's degree.

2026-09-05 07:00 Coming in so late just to switch from archaeology as a topic, that I share Emily's visceral disgust at the fondant dick filled with mini M&Ms. eeeewwwwwwwww

Listening to this on the subway and trying not to laugh like a maniac at m&m/fondant dick

Jordan Holl

M&M tube dick is giving me the forbidden Skittle commercial vibes.

Sherle

Omg! New here and trying to catch up. Does it have to be so f#*%ing hard to just listen to short rests in order?

Jomalar

Use the app? It's not hard at all.

Timothy Hutsell

"I think this dick would taste fine" -murph Same tho

foxclaw

All this m&m filled dick talk makes me think of the guy on reddit who got his dick stuck in an m&m tube

Bg

Came here 2.5 years later to make sure someone set the record straight 🤘🏻😂

Sinister Donut

I absolutely eat my Hershey Kisses just like Emily, and I think I’m the only other one hahaha.

riskutforthebriskut

nobody said anything abour a penis... it's a silicone-like cylinder that can expand and contract attached to a larger structure, obviously not a penis

A suspicious rat

Gawain can be pronounced “gah-wane” or “guh-wane” or even “gow-in” as the more medieval pronunciation

Maggie Myers

I'm a PhD candidate who studies medieval Arthurian literature (including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight!) and I can confirm that there's no one way to pronounce Gawain! The way y'all are saying it is perfectly legit! :)

Lia

Big vibrant thorny rose to Jake for getting to say "watch this" and follow it up with a finisher.

Evan Cordero

Lol. The domino's bit reminds me of the bit where you have to order a pizza in the most convoluted way possible. Like a Craig's list ad or in the comment section on an Uber Eats order from somewhere else. I just relistened to that episode so it's fresh in my mind lol

Eidolon

Archaeologist here: (1) archaeology is a subfield of anthropology which is the study of humans. So where we study past material culture, paleontologists study past macrofaunal material (things like dinosaur bones). (2) we do both our own excavations called field work and (the only people who exclusively interpret are just 80 year old tenure professors) interpret the literature produced. (3) Depends where you are. Some places can't really preserve bones or biotic matter because of climate, but in the southwest yes; it is so many bones. We have entire rooms full of bones.(4) just kinda happy. (5) I have never heard the term roskeller so... No.

kitty heite

Archaeologists and paleontologists are "different" and usually don't interact much. Not sure about how paleontologists feel about Ross Geller but my hunch is they are super into the ones from Jurassic Park. I know the archaeologists I grew up with in the 80s and 90s secretly loved Indiana Jones. Since I didn't end up following my parents into that field (that's an archaeologist joke) i can't promise how the pop culture jokes are now.

Quincy

I feel like onyx would be huge on tiktok but not for dancing she would just go on unhinged rants and people would follow for the drama

Steven S

Lovely to sit down with a meal and turn on the short rest only to get slapped in the face with "dick skin and m&ms" 😂

JWunder

This was great, Caldwell talking about the peppermint JoeJoe's needs the holiday pack of JoeJoe's, 4 different type of joejoes, all chocolate dipped, and includes the perppermint ones

Grumpy Druid

Some kind of Zelda nonsense deep dive lead by Emily would be rad af. Love your work and instincts. Peace

Adriana B

hi everyone!! i just wanna say that i have finally caught up with the 3 main campaigns and this is the first time im going to actually be waiting for the next episode!!! super excited and cant wait to be here for the rest of this journey :)

Summer Rose (Grantaire)

Other archaeologists have already chimed in to explain the difference between archaeology and paleontology, but I would like to add my voice as one who was yelling at the wall while listening to this. If anyone ever called me a Ross Geller to my face, I'd struggle not to throw hands. And NOT because he was a paleontologist! XD

Lauren

Bioarchaeologist here! We do the digging and analyze the organic matter (bones) that is found on archaeological digs! The archaeologists also dig but only deal with inorganic material. A lot of us are into anime, Ross Geller would hold little weight. Naruto, JJK, and Chainsaw man specifically

Liza

Thanks guys. yeah I don’t think I’ll think about fondant and tiny m&ms the same way again

Nova

My mom sister AND aunt always buy so many jojos because they go so fast and then we end up with so many! They also sell white chocolate peppermint candy cane kisses at the holidays (I eat them the same way as Emily 😂)

Bransy330

To go this whole episode and not land on "fondong"

Skyler G.

The sigh of relief I just let out seeing the responses from archaeologists and anthropologists 😅 the amount of times I've had to correct people who think I've dug up dinosaur bones... My goodness haha

SnuggieWielder

Love the Hades references, one of my favorite games 🥰. All I have left to do in the game is reunite my favorite sad boys Achilles and Patroclus 👨‍❤️‍👨

Tim

The conversation of a remote Dominos reminded me that during my first campaign, the DM asked where we were going as a party and we said we were on a quest for a China Buffet. After 2 years and 20 levels, we finally got to that China Buffet.

Turner Tush

I used to work at papa John’s and I will bend the knee if you cut ties with the weak minded dominoians

Shy-senpai

It's episodes like these that make me miss college humor. This sounds like a brainstorming session for a really chaotic skit.

Ben Greet

Another archaeologist chiming in to say that we would never refer to ourselves as Ross Gellers...

Andrew Aziz

Hearing Emily reference Tiny Vermin in Hades made my day!! I was thinking the exact same thing when listening to the ep haha

YourAnimeDad

Silver Serpent? Silver Surfer?

Aaron Bowyer

I once choked on a kiss because it flew straight into my throat and my dad had to give me the heimlich. Murph is truly a beast for popping them as pills 😆

Alexis Rausch

Another archeologist chiming in - we both dig, but paleontologists dig dinos, we dig people. We both have field/lab work- field work is digging, lab work is analyzing what you found in the field. I'd prefer to be called Indiana Jones but neither him nor Ross Geller are real archeologists in actuality

Grass

They’re always out of holiday jo jos:(

bj cox

View crew with special guest Jake

Sam Johnston

My little sister, who is also a naddpole but a few episodes behind right now, is an archeologist and will have plenty to say about the palientology/archeology thing. Looking forward to that lol

Josh

losing my shit at my desk over the concept of a fondant dick filled with m&m minis

Maxwell murder

As a dominos employee it be my honor to make pizza in the woods for y'all lol

Alex Herndon

He’s a 10 but he has a fondant dick filled with mini m&ms lmao he’s still a 10

Grimmie

Mini m&ms are superior because not only do you get a tiny little choco snack, but it *also* fulfills your desire to snack on aquarium gravel

Alex Moore

So many legendary bits this episode - one for the history books. Future Ross Gellers look out!

Sable Martin-O'Neil

The little mouse that lives in the giant's head, really gives me Ender's Game vibes for anyone who has read the book🥰

Tallon McAbee

My gf is a paleontologist and both have their own methods of field work and each of their methods normally damage the other’s specimens if someone is not careful. TLDR you do not want an archeologist handling fossils not within their field, otherwise an army of unpaid and overworked paleo people will destroy everything in a 5 block radius.

Fridge

Mixed bag one shot dm’d by Jake, or Emily, about the boy wizard and his frog pal.

Jared D.

Did Emily get to use her umbrella this week?

2026-09-05 07:00 Ok mini m&ms are so good though there IS more shell but the shell is thin and they’re easy to chew and that just makes them better to me. I’m 5 minutes in and already triggered, jk love you guys (I did gasp audibly though and my bf was concerned) give mini m&ms another try 😂❤️

Funny that I am at work at Trader Joe’s listening to this episode. Anyway those chocolate covered joe joes are back this year so get em while you can

Devon Sendler

As a geologist I think I can help! We will use density surveys in the Fae Wild to find egg shaped anomalies. I’m sure dragon eggs are DENSE

Cj Ferrigno

The Hoglidays have begun

If yall thought the A24 movie was insane, read the original sir gawain and the green knight, the best translation is actually by Tolkien

Archaeologist here! So (roughly): Paleontology - this is the study of animal life. Geology - this is the study of the content of the physical earth itself. History - this is the study of what has been written about human societies. Archaeology - this is the study of human societies. In America, Archaeology is a subset of Anthropology, which is the study of societies both modern and ancient, while in Europe Archaeology is its own independent field of research, with the focus being on understanding non-extant peoples (we like to say 'understanding the past to better comprehend the present and prepare for the future,' when we're pressed about it at parties). There are multiple forms of archaeology. Some archaeologists work entirely in the lab or the library, working with research done by others in the field, while other archaeologists are in the field, working on active excavations. As a professional archaeologist I work extensively in the field, but as an also academic archaeologist I also work considerably in the archives. Archaeology can work hand in hand with Paleontology, Geology, and History, as all these sciences compliment the other, but the four fields are distinct. Sometimes we are digging bones. An archaeologist who specialises in bones is an Osteoarchaeologist. Other archaeologists can go their entire lives and never touch a skeleton, as their speciality may be in something else - the study of ancient foods, ceramics, political systems, currency, etc. My speciality is in understanding historical conflict, so I work a lot with skeletons, though I am no specialist in the skeletons themselves; more the situations surrounding the death of the individual.
