Murph actually posted the sode early for the first time ever

Ranch Bass

Bro its so early. You good? 😂

Thimo The Fool

Perfect thank u! I am in hospital rn and this helps a lot!!

Justin Yankwitt

Can someone send me a link to hag? I wanna play this game

thiswayjose

Anyone know the game with this aging and finding an heir mechanic?

Professor Pratt

I looked it up and Ars Magica seemed to consistently pop up.

Cheddar Whizard

I find it suspicious that the player didn't mention the name of the aging\heir game system. When playing new systems, I've seen so many players rely 100% on the DM, even ignoring the player specific materials. Then they get surprised by some core mechanic and blame the DM. GIVE US THE NAME YOU COWARD!

VerminFang

With the mounted Bard I do think it was lost for the movement argument that the players movement would *also* be doubled because the greater Steed is presumably hasted because the rider is hasted "While mounted on it, you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target the mount" which also gives them haste as well. Caldwell was brushed off bringing up that it was a goliath but they do actually have a mechanical trait that counts them as one size larger for pulling and lifting so that also feels pretty relevant.

Cheddar Whizard

Also, grappling replaces an attack action and so it can be done while mounted. The whole section on needing to dismount ignores this.

ChappyThoughts

Total cover question: basically the same as invisibility. Can't be targeted directly but you can attack the space they are in at disadvantage.

Joe F.

But unlike invisibility, all the attacker has to do is move so they can see behind the person blocking the Halfling. Hiding doesn't make you invisible. If a creature has line of sight to you where you attempt to hide, you technically can't hide. From D&D Beyond: "You can't hide from a creature that can see you clearly, and you give away your position if you make noise, such as shouting a warning or knocking over a vase. An invisible creature can always try to hide. Signs of its passage might still be noticed, and it does have to stay quiet." So, sure, go behind your friend. You still need to 1) use your action (or BA cunning action or equivalent) to take the "hide" action, and 2) remain concealed. If a rogue hides behind a box, and the attacker gains line of sight behind the box to the rogue, the rogue is no longer concealed/hidden--or at least, that is how I'd rule it.

Mariela Renquist

I play a 380 year old gnome bard who has "aging mechanics," but it was decided between the DM and myself. It only happens with every level up, such as they can't take a physical ASI or feat, and their HP can be impacted if they don't work to prevent it. Honestly it was great because they became a more and more powerful spellcaster/face of the party while the other characters worked to protect them. But that was 100% my choice.

evans-endeavors

I was the DM for the froghemoth vs milk 😅 To add some minor clarification. I believe I let the alchemist summon milk instead of beer from their alchemy jug since the goblin alchemist was just baby. She didn’t drink beer. But I feel validated for Murph immediately agreeing with me lol. If it was a beast like a giant frog I’d reward that knowledge and probably allow it since it was just a oneshot. But since the froghemoth is a monstrosity I determined it wouldn’t have the same limitations as a frog’s digestive system. Especially since they tend to eat everything! Was real fun recognizing the title. A real good episode 👌 (Dani if you see this I’m sorry about your punishment, but I’ll also take a strawberry milkshake while you’re at it.)

David Kuckuck

I don't think full cover is justified for standing between someone's legs. Half or three quarters are also options, afterall.

Michael Eldridge

I know 3.5 has some aging mechanics in RAW, but a year every few sessions seems like a lot personally, especially compared to my group that's been stuck in the same 3 days in game for over 6 months IRL. The lineage idea could be interesting in a Jojo's Bizarre Adventure way

Jack Jones

It’s already Thursday evening in aussyland :D

Michael Eldridge

Also mechanically Lightfoot can use people to make a hide check, and creatures are only listed under the types of cover as adding half cover. The Lightfoot description does add some confusion because the description says using people as cover

Three awakened gooses

If the DM for the total cover case happens to see this a piece of advice would be to give some enemies tremorsence! That way your enemies can still sense their presence even behind total cover.

Thunderous Turtle

For the steed - I would make two roles - if on the horse then the grapple is at disadvantage and then a strength check (dc determined by creature) or if not on the horse then normal grapple but strength check at disadvantage as you are trying to mount while holding someone. Make the dc hard and tell them before the role lol.

Bob C

Regarding the rug question, I actually did set up a room where they had to roll on damn near everything. But in my defense they were investigating a crime scene and I built the encounter as a point and click adventure game where they rolled a base investigation check and then clicked on various areas of the map(a Japanese highschool lab background I believe I took from a dating sim) where I had certain flags set up for what they found based off their investigation. It is doable to have a "check for every specific area" but it really should be used sparingly and in those situations. Also it led me to build a murder mystery party session in another game where you're basically playing a Mashup of Clue and Werewolf.

Kyle Veach

Personally, love the aging mechanic. Adds a level of difficulty and a chance to play lots of different kinds of characters. It's a roguelike! Thats dope!

Hunter Wright

Who's gonna tell Murph that real-life frogs also have teeth?

BeanCurdHero

So sad i missed the show at the Wilbur, feels to me like the perfect venue for dnd court lol. Love dnd court, you each and every one is just a banger lol

Joey Masq

For the grappling while mounted rules, since the player is a Barbarian, they have Proficiency with nets and you can absolutely catch someone with a net, drag them hundreds of feet and abandon them. It's just a Dex Save on the NPC's part and if it's a problem with a BBEG, they got Legendary Resistances hopefully. If not, it's time out time

Donny

Thank you for taking my case! If you're curious, we're playing One Ring, an officially licensed TTRPG for the Lord of the Rings franchise. So if I had played an elf (who never ages) or a dwarf (who lives for hundreds of years), the aging mechanic would not be a big deal. But I didn't. I chose to be a human, who went from a healthy adventurous 28 to a haggard 40 in the blink of an eye.

Maya Soh-Brown

Personally, I would rule that even 3/4 cover for hiding behind someone’s legs is GENEROUS.

RDWilly

Re: time-out Bard, as soon as they drop the creature off and head back to battle, that creature gets an attack of opportunity and if they hit the Bard they force a concentration check to keep up haste. If they lose concentration both the Bard and the mount miss their turn as their haste ends. It'd at least make them think about the risks in the future.

Renegade

omg thank you for the follow up, i was so curious which rpg was being used

Dylan C

Truly blessed day. I cannot remember the last time we had an ep this early. *annoying chosen voice* the goddess shines on us brothers and sisters!

Guilherme Farias

I don’t have a fun slideshow (maybe one day when I have time) buuuut we all know Florida is a lawless land and the honorable justices should bring down the war hammer of justice and the blessing of dice Christ to the sunshine state. Also as I am obviously speaking for the whole state, we should make Jake a practicing justice in the whole state not just a city like Boston. This is my one wish. Thank you for you time

Donny

Hi, the coward here. We are playing One Ring, and our campaign is set in the decades between the ending of The Hobbit and the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring. The aging mechanic is lopsidedly affecting the humans and hobbits in the party while not having much impact on the elves and dwarves in the party.

Joe D’Antonio

I would listen to 2 hours of Murph describing the directions from which a person in total covered cannot be hit

Megladon

As a Utahn, you can have the jazz, Emily. I’m just honored you want them 😂

Poronekton

Net of Brooklyn criminally underrated joke

polyglottal cracker

RE: FIRST CASE — the ruling hinged on the heir mechanic supposedly being a surprise, but the submitter said up front that they had been ignoring the mechanic. Meaning they already knew about it, they just didn't bother to actually pay any attention to it.

Lance Bassett

Could be wrong, but I think the chance of rolling 7 nat 1’s across 12 rolls is .000048%. Crazy unlikely That’s taking each dice roll as a bernoulli trial with p = 0.05 (correct me if that doesn’t work)

Dani Sharkey

What a wonderful birthday present to be ordered to a lifetime sentence of crafting milkshakes for froghemoths! Thank you Justices for taking my case, and I humbly accept your delicious punishment 😌

Ilana Galpert

Trying to use milk is so funny because there are 3 different kinds of alchemy jugs with myriad options and none have milk. They do all allow you to summon 2 gallons of vinegar though. One has boiling hot tea, another has literal poison

Ilana Galpert

They all allow 2 gallons of mayonnaise

Chloe Peifly

happy birthday! may your milkshakes be delicious

Mak

For the rug one, I’d hype them up like “yeah checking under the rug and see no trap door because it’s OBVIOUS” but then I’d do something like because they are on their knees looking you catch a glint of something that you missed while standing.

pief

Regarding the Timeout Bard: Murph was kind of on the right track, but he did indeed get lost in the math. Spending 10ft of movement to grapple and move the enemy onto the horse would leave the Bard with 20ft. Since mounting is half of his movement (15ft), he will still have 5ft remaining on that turn. That being said though, I would probably rule that the Bard should at least roll the grapple checks with disadvantage because wrestling a humanoid while mounting/riding a horse is crazy 😂

Jacob Coates

He would also have a hasted action because with find steed any spell you cast that only targets yourself also targets your steed

Jacob Coates

Dispel magic doesn’t work on find steed, greater steed and familiar

Wedge Skyrocket

Cover is directional, so you can have cover from one creature and not from others, or different values of cover simultaneously. You have to interpret cover from the perspective of the creature trying to make the attack. If your target was on the other side of a wall that completely obscured their body, that would be total cover. But you could put a fireball off to the side of the wall and still catch them. If you were on the same side of the wall as that creature, no cover. Emily's spot on in her interpretation--the halfling can get total cover behind their friends, but only to creatures that aren't able to see around the friend. A flying enemy could fly above or really any enemy could literally just walk around them.

Ellen

I gotta say, I'm lovin' the uptick of hockey talk in NADDPOD content. It's like adding an almond to an M&M.

joel

ellen i feel identical. hockey needs more compassionate dorks

Ian Hanson

Does it mean cover in the sense of hiding and not cover as in protection

Nick Lerche

I mostly agree but there was this one nugget when they read that "partial cover can be granted from a creature" so i would give partial cover with no stealth roll

Nick Lerche

I mostly agree but there was this one nugget when they read that PARTIAL cover can be granted from a creature . partial cover with no stealth roll. Stealth roll for more cover if they have hide as a bonus action otherwise that's their action to use a meat shield

Patrick Harry

Is this the free league release? I disagree with our judges in that you play different systems and those mechanics are a part especially outside of the 5e realm. On the DM for not fully prepping that but if you are all learning the system together you gotta take some initiative and help learn the system as well

Patrick Harry

That sounds like it’s in 5e which home brewed and not mechanics built into this other system

Mikeroscopic

Homie just wanted to flight with his friends.

Patrick Harry

And my thought is if you are jumping into a new system try your best to learn the mechanics. So many different games play different and the reason we have those is for different mechanics I think look to embrace those different mechanics in the system. Also Free League is a pretty great publisher so I would encourage the submitter to play along and search out an heir!

KaptainSigyl

So, during the discussion of the Froghemoth, Murph said something that got me thinking. His reasoning for Bullywugs canonically having teeth is that they have a Bite attack. But, the Bullywug's Bite attack deals bludgeoning damage, whereas something like a wolf's Bite attack does piercing. It seems more likely to me that a Bullywug's 'Bite' attack isn't it taking a chomp out of you, but trying to swallow you.

Jo Hobbs

Just saying, Alberto the frog in Bod loves milkshakes

Price

I’d check the Roll20 settings. We had the opposite problem for a few sessions and it turned out there was a way to set it to autocrit. I don’t remember how or how we fixed it.

Kelley

"You can burn this rug to cast revivify" incredible as always!

Mosesf

As a random person on the internet, RAW your mount would probably pull you and the grappled creature apart, like how a thunderwave can pull grappled creatures apart.

PineappleLiar

The grapple bard should invest in a lasso and go full RDR cowboy. Don’t need to worry about a grapple check if you can just rope em up from range.

Sean McClain

Correct, however mounting rules also say you can't mount if your speed is 0 and the grappled creature has a speed of 0 and thus that creature can not be "forcibly mounted." So they would need to be considered cargo. Thus I think it's only allowed if the creature size difference is large enough for it to be cargo. So by RAW it is a bit weird, I do believe just invent custome mechanics is the correct path.

Colin Pack

😂 how did Columbus Blue Jackets get involved. We've been... Ok. 😂

Jess D.

Roll20 digital dice are crazy - I also average an insane amount of nat ones using it. In two sessions once I got 6 in the first session, 4 in the second, but I changed the roll speed and it helped!

Steve Haack

Yeah I think it sounds cool, and it didn't sound like there was anything in it that as you get older you get decrepit. It's a bummer you didn't know from the outset, but I think that can be a very rad roleplaying opportunity. Pass that hobbiton mansion on to the next generation, pay the death tax!

tiger

(Sorry in advance for the long read! LOL) I have pretty much this exact lightfoot halfling build! Murph would hate my character, probably. She's a pastel pink kobold (my beautiful, wonderful DM let me use halfling stats) named Jingle Pink Hee Hee. Jingle Pink is an escaped illegal exotic pet with a silenced bell collar and a gremlin voice. We leaned hard into roleplaying rehabilitating this feral monster into society as her world expanded exponentially past the carelessly cracked-open window of her family's home. (She couldn't remember what they called her after starving on the streets for so long, so she came up with Jingle Pink Hee Hee herself.) The campaign was airship pirate themed, so I took the thief rogue class to make full use of second-story work, scampering around on the rigging and manipulating objects to my advantage. My partner was a prim and proper lady Goliath paladin named Tiffany Locke. Jingle would climb up and around her to hide during battle and dish out mindblowingly powerful sneak attacks with the little dagger she carries in her mouth. My DM had no problem dealing with Jingle. Whenever I hid I rolled stealth against the passive perception of enemies, so it didn't always work. Also, Jingle was exceeding fragile, so even with Uncanny Dodge any attack that landed made a big impact. She had to be right in the middle of battle for this strategy to work. Depending on the individual enemy, they might take an action to look for her, use AoE spells to hit her, knock Tiffany prone or grapple her ("kill your friends!"), etc. Fights were usually for some ulterior purpose rather than just for the sake of having battles in DnD, so sometimes Jingle would need to use her bonus action to problem solve with Cunning Hands instead of hiding in order to win the day. Also, Jingle was the best scout in the group, so when we explored the mainland she was usually the one to scout ahead. She's really sneaky, so the risk was worth it to us, but she'd been ambushed more than once while out on her own and had to run away or risk dying. Jingle was probably the most fun I've ever had playing battles because her build inherently tied itself to roleplaying and cooperation. She's a blast for everyone, including the DM! So all in all this build isn't that frustrating. For example, currently, I'm playing a sorcerer who IMHO is worse because he spams buffs and lightning from a distance. He gets hit way less than Jingle ever did, and once he reaches level 14 and gets his dragon wings, he'll be so annoying. (As long as he doesn't keep losing his cool and going for unarmed strikes that mechanically do literally zero damage. LOL)

Dallon Taylor

i swear every dungeon court theres someone whos like "i pushed something crazy and my dm got upset, was i actually....wrong?" YES YOU MANIACS

Zac Felton

Why would you just do wine or beer for the jug? Alcohol is the answer!

panpolypuff

We live for the wholesome D&D relationships! ❤️

Miles Barette-Duckworth

If everyone is aging in the campaign, wouldn't the big bads also age? And in turn wouldn't this add pressure to facing them in a timely manner before they too get too old?

Cristian

12 rolls in 2 sessions? Did nobody else think that was crazy low?

Timothy Hardy

For the time out Bard, if he has haste that's 60 ft of movement for those math people

Crits

Tbf, only some species do. #NotAllFrogs

Crits

Wait really? My poor little familiar was dispelled twice in my campaign. I demand justice!

Crits

Funnier reason: all their teeth are molars

Kylie

Roll 20 is literally just Like That I'm so sorry to the person who rolled 7 nat 1's

Griffin Werschky

I feel that person who rolled 7 nay 1s, as someone who consistently rolls low on roll over systems and rolls high on roll under systems

Lilybet Gates

Hoid’s Friend the elder- I’m getting a Cosmere tattoo please Can we be friends

Meletios

Suggested solution for the “Timeout Bard” The bard, while mounted, can make a grappling check on someone. On a regular success, the bard successfully grabs the person with the grapple, and are able to drag them up to half speed. (dragging someone while riding a horse). On a fail, the enemy is able to avoid being grabbed by the mounted bard. On a critical success, the bard catches the enemy off guard and is able to pull them onto the side of their horse, and can then zip zip 500 feet away with haste or whatever and put them in timeout. Thoughts? :)

Jeff Miller

What are the odds of rolling a one seven times in 11 rolls? Around .000021%. If you prefer odds to probability, we're talking a 21/100,000,000 longshot. Put even simpler, you're looking at about a 1 in 5,000,000 chance of this happening.

Cody Williams

Low blow coming at the Blue Jackets haha totally did not expect to hear them mentioned in a dungeon court. But we do suck.

Pip

I wonder if someone come up with a mechanics for lassoing people and dragging them off

Philippe Bertrand

On the lightfoot halfling case, I think RAI is that a LF halfling can use another creature as an terrain/obstruction that allows them to take the hide action, deferring to the hide action rules

Briar Bertolin

For the roll 20 roller person: I had the same issue but on foundry. If you are using the physics simulation, it's buggy and only clusters around a few roles because it simulates the random roll starting from the same point. We turned off the physical roller simulation and the results became normal again

Cass DeMarco

Does art exist of this character because I need to see it

Cass DeMarco

I’ve seen the person comment something about “One Ring”

W1LDF1RE

If a Goliath bard has a hasted steed they can absolutely put them in timeout, and there are absolutely rules for it. You use you action to grapple, and if that is successful you can pick up the person. A Goliath would be able to carry most creatures without any I’ll effects in it’s speed. You then use half of your movement to mount your steed, 250 feet of your mounts movement, a free action to drop the grappled person to the ground, another 250 feet back to the fight, and you still have 40 feet of your steeds movement, a bonus action to give a bardic inspiration, and the other half of your personal movement to get back off of your steed. It all checks out to me.

heaps and heaps of worms

"Total cover" doesn't mean that nobody on the battlefield can hit you. If I'm behind a wall, I have total cover from enemies *on the other side of the wall*. It's specific to each enemy

Sam Helms

That random guy accidentally called the NBA finals

Denali Smith

I haven’t seen any comments yet but Pendragon RPG seems like the first game they were talking about

Rychu

First case with the justices dismissing a different ttrpg system based on one uninformed player's experience has made me question my faith in the legal system System is definitely Pendragon btw and honestly i find it odd that a player in current year wouldnt give a cursory goog to look at the mechanics

Mr. Baggins

But even with powerful build you would only be able to move a grappled creature without penalty if it were small or tiny. You couldn’t do it to a medium creature since it is only one size smaller.

Summer Tribe

I truly don't understand their problem with the grappling thing. this is just weird to listen to. it sounds like utterly new players saying they think something is broken just cause they've never heard of it. granted the mounted combat rules suck and are near non existent also it boggles the mind that they've been playing DnD for so long and that they didn't treat the hiding thing as a shut case IMMEDIATELY. You're not hidden if you're visible, hiding behind a larger ally ends the moment an enemy changes their perspective at all, it doesn't require a check. easy peasy. what's more total cover is a two way street. all in all it doesn't even matter, why would you try to hit the halfling if there's a viable target in front of the halfling? presumably the enemies are trying to kill all the PCs, and splitting damage leads to slower kills so it's not even optimal for them to target the halfling at the same time as the other PCs

Joe Howard

I have this in one of my games, where the lasso-er can get an enemy on a ranged attack, and chooses how much slack they want to give on that turn, while lasso-ed if either person(both the target and the lasso-er) wants to move more than that distance from each other, they have to make contested athletics checks, pulling the other person with them on a success at half speed. If the target wins on their turn, the lasso-er has the choice to be pulled or increase the distance of slack or even just drop the lasso. If the lasso-er wins on their turn, they can choose to stay still and decrease the lasso distance by the amount they would have moved instead (still pulling the target) The target also has the chance to beat a dc on their turn to break/slip free or attack and cut the lasso as well. It’s kinda complicated and hasn’t come up a ton, but it’s silly and we’ve been having fun with it.

Joe Howard

I have a rogue that is a light foot halfling and she’s always using our beefy dwarf cleric and Dragonborn paladins as cover, mostly to hide. A lot of times I just can’t hit her at all and it’s still very fun because I have been putting them against pretty strong people and it’s fun to let people who build tanks play their character actually tanking most the damage. (120 hp for paladin and 45 for rouge, some of my monsters would maybe kill her in one turn so this is much better lol)

childishcreator

44:40 "I use my slow fall ability" "FUCK"

Cody Gustafson

It’s no butt and that’s a no brainer

Summer Tribe

there may be some finicky way around that vis a vis putting the grappled creature on your mount, or having a tenser's floating disk within your reach (all you need is a 20 foot reach), or somethin, but the rules are pretty not good in that regard. if you're mounted and your mount is carrying a wagon or a chariot or something, surely that would do it

Matt

I would write a nemesis lightfoot halfling with the same abilities as the PC from their backstory, who is riding on an ogre or other massive creature/construct. “All of you and your friends have run and hidden from me (alluding to NPCs friends he has killed), how many of your friends do I need to tell him to kill before I can get to you?”

Abel Favela

For the timeout bard. Every one he leaves goes thru a Rocky montage to catch up and shows up 2 levels above with a Vendetta specific to player

Spades Pendragon

Oh man, I bought that a few years ago but never finished going through it (I don't exactly have people to play ttrpgs with me in person lol). I had no idea that was a mechanic....might pick it back up again, seems interesting

riskutforthebriskut

if you read the last sentence you wrote, you would understand the confusion lmao

Summer Tribe

not really? the lack of mounted combat rules doesn't (and can't) suddenly make grappling broken
