Shy-senpai

The tea pour was so audible. Did Murph BOOOOOOST the audio?

clvrgrl

It’s 5:23 AM and I stopped the pod to say TBWoRS was one of the highlights of Nick Jr. for me.

N A

Hahahaha the tea sounds actually picked up

saurphia

Richard Scarry!!!!! I'm an '03 baby and What Do People Do All Day was absolutely my favourite book growing up!

Lorelei and Kyra Newly Weds

I don't care if it's next year some time. Please do a DnD court in Seattle I beg you. If you do two shows I'll def have to go to both.

Vayne

Tea pour was indeed audible Emily 🤣 must be booooosted

Professor Pratt

I was born in 1969 and totally remember the Richard Scary books. Lowly Worm was my favorite along with the bear!

ananarama

Jake was right I thought the audio cut lol

David Guerrero

I like to think lying about the number of a dice on the floor was the first sin in the Dice Christ bible

Rush Ferrell

Sessions = get togethers. I’m with murph

boundspyral

Wowwwww I can't believe Murph is so petty that he boosted the audio on that tea pour... /s

teethknight

I can't remember if there's a winged dog, but there is the Tressym, which are winged cats with familiar stats

Charles Dennis

Get together 5 session 5. Get together 6 session. 5 part 2. Problem solved 😂😂

FiendishNoodles

Was pouring my water for tea this morning right when Emily was supposedly pouring hers. I had an out of body experience when Murph paused the audio for the tea to pour, I'm sorry Brian I'll sit in silence whenever listening to the pod from now on

tommy

Team Murph, Caldwell and Emily’s logic is driving me absolute nuts

KoboldB0i

That tea monent scared me frfr I thought some ASMR started hahaha

Diana

LMAO I'm in law school and the essay question on my torts final was about a car accident. Now I'm thinking about the product liability implications of driving an apple car...

BrethrenBlev

A session is a get together lol

brianchi

Team Emily and Caldwell bro!!! It's one session!!!!! Sometimes long episodes get split into multiple eps for airing but once released for DVD/streaming get put together since its one consecutive episode 😤

2026-09-05 07:00 Team Em & Caldwell!! It’s one long session just split in two. Like when C1 ep 100 had to be split into two parts to be uploaded to patreon 💁‍♀️

I heard the tea!

Re: the Goodberry- I think if the DM had specifically announced the dc as 30 beforehand it’d be one thing, ‘cause then the PC could know there’s no way to hit it

Myka Donati

I like the idea of divine intervention for the Goodberry, maybe have the player roll a final religion check to see how much they witness or describe that player as being the only one who notices.

Maya B

Why wouldn't it be session 5 pt 1 and session 5 pt 2, like a naddpod or dimension 20 season finale? I know precedent doesn't matter but I want it to.

Shannon V

This session vs get together numbering is also tearing apart my marriage, how many happy marriages will session numbering ruin!

Gearbox

If we're being RAW about the crossbow goodberry, I'd rule that that was as a weapon attack, and that a nat 20, which always hits on a weapon attack, would be able to surpass the 30 dc.

FusRohNahSon

Emily and caldwell logic sounds like arcs would be sessions because u didnt finish the business

Benjamin Canner

VHS Titanic rules: 2 VHS tapes, one movie

Alex Messbarger

A session isn’t a story arch I actually don’t understand how anyone is disagreeing with murph

Maya B

CALDWELL JUST SAID "On D20 I Play With Maps" ON D20??? CALDWELL DIMENSION 20??? NADDPOD D20 CROSSOVER?????????

Maya B

In hindsight, I am sorry for yelling

Dallon Taylor

if the session didnt finish, and theyre submitting SAYING the session didnt finish and they got together to finish it, its the same session

Greg Lohman (tsarducci)

Yeah the dm erred by making it an attack instead of an athletics check or something if he wanted to set an impossible DC.

FiendishNoodles

The berry hits the tongue first, bringing the pc back up to 1, then the rest of the crossbow bolt strikes, applying crit damage and knocking the pc back down into the fire 😆

Crits

I think he probably meant roll20 and misspoke

Crits

Caldwell when you say "Yellowjackets shit" are you comparing it to Misty breaking the flight recorder bc if so that's so funny

Kyle Veach

Murph is always correct. Yall are insane.

ACK

IT PICKED UP

Josh Serbus

Will you sign my lowly worm?

Jenna H

He said 'y'all' not 'I'

Dag Swaniels

I'm with Murph on the session argument; I have no idea why this isn't cut-and-dry, lol

k.allen

I had a peel and stick book of The Busy world of Richard Scarry and you mentioning that show transported me back to my parents living room floor plating with that thing for hours so vividly lol

Johnny Flaccid

same lmao i hate siding with murph for the bit lol but this argument made me wanna scream

Matt Atkinson

I think you can have a session number for tracking how many times you played but maybe on the prep notes have chapters for story beats and maybe even arcs for longer plots. I agree that it would be two episodes but in chapter terms it's one chapter.

2026-09-05 07:00 When it comes to checks that are impossible I'm fully on the DM's side there. If a player wants to attempt it it's up to them to manage their own expectations. And failing that spectacularly is just as good of a story beat as succeeding. That is the moment where that character realized they just weren't good enough yet, and maybe that would spur them to train and explore how they can get better. DM was in the right. Players can try anything, but they're never guaranteed success.
2023-05-12 21:20 EDIT: I retract the following post: nat 20s ARE auto successes on attack rolls, and shooting a crossbow IS a gorramn attack roll. RAW they gosh darn succeeded!! ~~When it comes to checks that are impossible I'm fully on the DM's side there. If a player wants to attempt it it's up to them to manage their own expectations. I think he meant 'on Roll 20' because that was what the question was about. I believe he has talked before about playing home games with folks using roll 20.

Maya B

OK u guys r ruining my delusions

Rei

He also had an Apple car. Had a pico game. And distinct memories.

hell

i grew up on richard scary and i am HYPE for this intro. give me the busytown takes!!! (i def didnt comment this on the wrong ep lmao)

Mortimer Lunch

This! I came to say there is precedent on NADDPOD! lol

Wit & Whimsy

I’d like to put into evidence Episode 100: HEART OF THE WORLD (PART I OF II). Proof that episode and sessions are distinct.

Rene the Monster Captain

The DM should decide what the sessions are! Murph, I feel you and I sympathize with you in this kangaroo court

m. white

well, that got kinda tense

2026-09-05 07:00 i know it was clarified as a silly joke but as my party's Forever Note Taker it would legitimately annoy me to argue about the session labeling! cramming the amount of substace that would, time-wise, count as two separate sessions into one subdivision of notes would make it needlessly busy & harder to keep track of physically & mentally imo. don't make me try to associate two separate days as the same session, my memory is already taped together with sticky notes & adderall T-T i would not be able to hold both of those competing labels in my head & still remember the actual details x-x

We heard that TEA Emily :) keep on pourin'!

Armando Ocampo

Listening to youth of the nation before the episode cus life is rough sometimes. Thank you N.A.D.D.P.O.D

Bridget

It should be session 14 or whatever and CHAPTER 13 still. They had to meet again because the chapter wasn’t finished but the session was. Sessions are based on time and chapters are based on story content.

Alec Posta

It's wild that even in the comments so many people are split on the session thing. My marriage is in shambles, I just need a clear answer!

tonytheoneandonly

I literally thought the audio cut out for a second

Summer Tribe

are people just unaware that suffocation rules exist? man the reputation dnd players have for not reading the PHB is totally earned Suffocating A creature can hold its breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + its Constitution modifier (minimum of 30 seconds). When a creature runs out of breath or is choking, it can survive for a number of rounds equal to its Constitution modifier (minimum of 1 round). At the start of its next turn, it drops to 0 hit points and is dying, and it can't regain hit points or be stabilized until it can breathe again. For example, a creature with a Constitution of 14 can hold its breath for 3 minutes. If it starts suffocating, it has 2 rounds to reach air before it drops to 0 hit points. right there in chapter 8 of the PHB

2026-09-05 07:00 and at 45, as much as I get the "don't let people roll if they can't pass" mentality, there are modifiers to rolls that can come up and change the roll after, furthermore you can have failure/success by degrees, it's still well worth rolling knowing that a 20 fails if the player or and ally could bust a bardic or a flash of genius or something

Giancarlo Provo

My friends and I are going to road trip Sacramento and Portland shows!!

Navar Keelan

You guys should play a star wars one shot!

Luke Collister

I mean RAW they probably kill them if they crit on an attack roll to shoot a crossbow bolt into their teammates mouth with only a berry for protection, so I'm not sure we're dealing with RAW here haha

Luke Collister

Then it would probably deal damage. We're deep in looney toons logic here so I don't think RAW is going to apply anymore hahaha

Reclaimer-087

That was a finale though, not a mid campaign session

T3r hx

Jake my name is pronounced Tercks lol

T3r hx

Jake my name is pronounced Tercks lol

Star_Drek

Who’s going to tell jake they say “oye oye” before the Supreme Court of the US meets and not “hear ye hear ye”

Star_Drek

This fantasy made-up court podcast show must follow my model for an America-centric justice system

Dylan Meyer

I think the answer is clear every marriage is made up of one person who considers every new get together a new session and one person who considers a full session and a wrap up session as one session and trying to resolve the difference causes the marriage to explode from quantum entanglement

Ryan

They were blinded by the 20s on the berry case. They didn’t make the DC. Case closed

Whitney Ahn

I mean regardless, the rules say that a nat 20 attack roll is an automatic hit, it’s the skill checks that are the homebrew

Pip

Session + wrap up session is one long session to me, just with a long break in it.

Magnoliidae

The absolute irony of c1 of naddpod having episode 100 pt 1 and 2 instead of a an ep 101 re: the first case 🤣

Kali Berg

“Jade City”, heard. I buy every book Emily recommends immediately after the two absolute bangers “Gideon the Ninth” and “Priory of the Orange Tree” rocked my world

Jenna

ok the audio Did drop out but for a brief moment I thought someone was peeing

Jody

I second this! I guess we need to make a power point??

Mackenzie Fresquez

As a long-distance backpacker: we refer to those ups and downs on the hike as “PUDs”: Pointless Ups and Downs. They are definitely some type 2 fun 😅

Moonlit Ghost

Recently registered to trinyvale and the elevator cade reminded me of when they all took a long rest right in front of cadwels hotelevator

Sampson

I’ve got Richard Scarry’s “Cars and Trucks and Things That Go” next to my coffee table! Love y’all tonnes ‘n buckets 🤙✌️🤘

Jake Nathanson

They definitely boosted em’s audio 😂😂

Summer Tribe

I was more responding to how Murph was saying not to ask for checks that you anticipate failing

Isa Gamez

Appreciation for caldwells very brief yellowjackets reference

Jorjudge

So... Does the sorcerer just need it kindly explained that yesanding is still useful in DnD but isn't a part of the games physics line in improve?

poppy marten

they played session 5 at get together 6, butttt the best way forward for the group is to now play 2 sessions at one together so that the numbers can even out! who doesn’t love a dnd marathon?

Mary Lucas

The tea picks up 😂😂🫖🫖 its faint, but it's there! At first I thought someone was in the bathroom 😂

Ty Cammenga

If the two separate meetings is one session why isn’t the whole campaign one session.

Ravit Pearlman

On relisten it takes them so long to get to so orchard it feels so natural it feels like it’s missing when they say so appled

Adrian Woodhouse

Almost 2 years later, and I still AGRESSIVELY agree with Murph on the Session thing. 2 different meet ups, 2 different sessions. Anything else is absolute lunacy.

June Walker

I remember the Busy World, Justice Murphy

Cooper Erikson

The Lowley Worm reference got me feeling old. Thanks justices Murphy and Tanner.

Kellyd

Relistening now and i kept waiting for so orchard and it came truly so late I was shocked lol

Invader Jimm

I'm with Murphy about the session debate. I have eaten a slice of pizza with the intention of it being a snack, but then ended up eating 4 slices, thus making it a meal.

aiyana graham art

with the DC 30 one, I feel like that could've easily been solved by the DM saying the DC beforehand. there's been lots of times on D20 where brennan will set a DC and someone will go "i can't even roll that with modifiers" and he goes "you can roll 2 nat20s" and that is the criteria under which the impossible is possible. but because the DM wasn't upfront about the DC, that moment could never have been initiated

Lindsay S

I've previously listened to the episode over my car speakers and couldn't hear the tea pouring, but listening again with my ear buds I could absolutely hear the tea. 🤣

Samuel Gray

Vanishingly rare murph w on the session number debate

Tucker Wilson

Listening to this episode fully three years later and immediately scrolled the comets to see if anyone noticed this! The DM crossed their wires by making an attack roll against a DC instead of against an AC. Attack rolls are the only thing RAW that auto succeed on a nat 20, so it actually makes the DM's decision worse! They didn't just ask for a roll that the player knew they numerically couldn't succeed, they also had to do a homebrew ruling that made success impossible.

Winston Gao

3 years late to this discussion but absolutely no DM has ever organized their notes "session 5.A" , "session 5.B" To get needlessly aggro with the take, anyone who disagrees with murph on the session logic is ungrateful to their dms prep work.

Christian Casteel

Re: Elevators; I feel like by far the most important element of encountering an elevator irl or in star wars is the fact that there's a door, usually right next to a control panel. The esteemed justices get a little lost in the shapes used to describe the elevator, but to me if that DM didn't want to say that there were elevators, they sinned by not describing the doors in the middle of the room.
