"Lol" said the Scorpion, "Lmao".

My weekend would've been ruined without bonus cases....this took too long, Murph....gosh darnnit.

J-P Voillequé

The bird hate on this ep is reeediculous. I have the Rito mayor as a side quest NPC in every damn campaign I run.

Aalexander Knight

What have I done in the past, Jake? Why might my DM not trust me, Murph? Well... It might have had something to do with the "rolling for dinner" incident.

Shane H

Flight at level one really is not that bad. I just want to be a colorful bird dude from Zelda. If I fly over Castle Walls at level one, I'm still going to get wrecked by every crossbow in the nation.

Kyle Veach

I fuckin love how much Murph brings up Warhammer since he recently got into it. I too am fairly new to the grimdark and bring it up every chance I get 😆 For the Emperor, Murph!

Cameron Davis

I support the Aarakocra player for the most part but see where their DM is coming from. I do think that the way the DM handled it sucks though. It’s one thing to have concerns about the mechanics of a PC and how it might fit into your campaign, but having a good idea for your character you’re excited about and just getting completely shut out on the grounds of “I don’t trust you” just outright sucks dude. The DM truly missed the “but” part of “no, but” and didn’t even try to work with them on it or offer any better explanation.

Mackenzie DeMello

With the aarakocra thing, I think there are definitely rules and compromises you can make to avoid fuckery. I think the no flying for a while is a very reasonable compromise. In my campaign, one of my players chose an aarakocra. He was a melee fighter, and In our first combat, we established that if he tries to hit and fly, the enemies get advantage on their attacks of opportunities. This was a pretty good compromise for us because it was a low-level campaign (started at one and ended at 4) so those opportunity attacks could really give him a beating

Aidan Boyle

Aarakocra DM has the feel to me of a DM who spends more time getting mad at hypothetical scenarios on reddit than actually running

kara mac

Feathers are like hair because they come from follicles

FusRohNahSon

Just to defend the forced thor submitter. The ending words of the submission was that the dm be lenient on "VISUAL FLAVOR" and NOT dmg like murph says

Rowan M

With the Thor one, why not just have them flavor it like it hits them on the way back and split the regular hit damage? Half the hit damage happens on the throw, the other half happens on the way back. Same exact hit damage, just fun flavor.

Marianne

Murph: Aarakocras are too goofy for something like Lord of the Rings. Me: There are talking eagles in Middle-Earth. Murph: Well, I guess there are the eagles. Me: The Hobbit even has a brief passage from the point of view of the Lord of Eagles. Caldwell: But they're just regular eagles. Me: _They have their own governing body._ Emily: Yeah, it's not the same. Me: *writhes in nerd agony*

Canid Duality

Aarakocra-kenku hybrid where they're flightless like the kenku but can talk like an aarakocra. Then either a jump bonus, glide ability, or once a long rest feather fall or even mimic voice. This should of been a (no, but)/(maybe, or)/(yes, and) compromise by the DM.

Canid Duality

Auto hitting and ignoring AC could complicate things.

Canid Duality

Agreed but they did say at the beginning they wanted an extra attack. The hard push probably caused some distrust. But the forced characters is also a problem.

Tony Green

I forgot about this comment section. Love you guys! Fans and cast alike!

Rowan M

That's not what I mean - I mean if I roll and hit, I roll my damage like normal for a single hit. Say I do 14 damage. Then I just flavor it as "I throw the hammer, it hits him for 7 damage, loops back around and hits him for another 7 on the way back to me." Just completely flavor, no change in mechanics. It's just a way to add flavor after you've already hit.

Pendergreens’ Sick Ibanez

The Edge chronicles had some gnarly-ass birdfolk called shrikes that had some classical drow type stuff going on

CommodoreBlue

Loved seeing the pseudopod and spray attack at the Denver live show! And the ice bridge

Alex Nappi

No one has mentioned it yet, but kenku are not a stand in for aarakocra. Kenku specifically are corvids and also cannot speak unless mimicking, and some people just don't wanna have to do that

Tim

The aarakocra hatred is insane to me. I played in a campaign with an aarakocra who had fly from level 1 and the campaign was totally normal. Never a problem.

Queue

I'm sorry but there's no way I'd let someone get away with producing a flashing lights/rave outfit with disguise self. Every other spell that can produce Light is evocation. I'd let them get away with a hi-vis jacket or reflectors or something, potentially giving advantage on a perception check to be seen, but flashing lights? Nah, I'll let you stretch the limits of the spell, but when they start stepping on other spells' usefulness is where I draw the line.

Heck

I like to think that Caldwell earnestly believes all PhD’s are medical doctors

Mauricio Caceres

The first year of my PhD I was working 70-80 hours a week. I don't think I could hide it from anyone let alone a partner, that's insane.

Star_Drek

What’re the odds I finally get my case into d&d court and it’s the episode I listen to ON THE WAY to see you live. And it was the title case! Shout out lord of the snails

DemonLordSparda

Brenan would have some things to say about that.

YugiMoto

Well jake has it easy because jill wouldnt even notice him being gone all the time

Crits

Can’t storm sorcerers fly after casting a spell at like level 1?

BahHumDoug

Color spray produces light, but the discussion at the table came down to the fact Minor Illusion says it cannot produce sound, light, smell, or other effects whereas the Silent Image (level 1, same as Disguise Self) only says it can’t produce sound, smell, or other effects. Wording seems like light isn’t excluded. Disguise Self doesn’t have any specific language about sound, smell, or light, but the DM limited my Disguise Self to stuff Silent Image could do.

Cass DeMarco

Because we’ve heard the many discussions they’ve had on D&D court of them talking about Kenkus and the mimicking speech specifically

An_Armed_Bear

That case combined with the thunder hammer case really highlights an aspect about the D&D community at large that annoys me. A lot of people will just let a caster argue for bonus effects not in a spell's description, but get really strict about martials trying to do the same thing with their weapon. Either let everyone play loose or make everyone stick to the script on their abilities.

Alex Nappi

Sure but they are suggesting kenku as a substitute for aarakocra, when kenku have strict rules to them. If you're just gonna ignore the rules for kenku, you can ignore the rules for aarakocra and let them fly later instead of at level 1

Clio

I really don’t understand the freak out over Aarakocra. Like Storm Sorcerers get a free 10ft fly WITHOUT OA’s at 1st level. Like the person just wanted to be a cool bird and nerfed the race themselves! Let your players have fun!!!

Clio

Exactly what I always think!

Savor_The_Robot

disguse self still has verbal and somatic components. if they bound your hands how did you cast da spell.

Jack Farley

We need a one shot where you guys play GOT and Starfox characters

2026-09-05 07:00 Ugh I hate myself right now but um actually the eagles do talk in The Hobbit pretty normally. They are not bird people or course.

tonytheoneandonly

If the DM changes the attack only after getting an AC boost then it's metagaming, the snail can do whatever the next turn but that turn they shouldn't change attacks

BahHumDoug

The DMG says that items that let you cast spells, like hat of disguise, require no components.

I’m a dm in grad school and it’s just for my MA and on top of also working part time, and just like juggling normal life shit it’s honestly a lot. I can’t even imagine dming while gettin a phd. In that context, imo it was quite considerate&kind of the dm to to take on running a campaign for(who I’m assuming is )their friends. The players willingly agreed to play knowing that the dm was busy and wouldn’t be able to take on all the usual responsibilities of a dm so it’s not like this is some case of taking advantage of a dm who’s just kinda ya know, crappy and not actually invested. So yeah, The fact that one of the players would take advantage of their the dm,who, notably, trusted them, and went out of their way to run this campaign for them and the other players despite how busy the dm was w/ grad school, is super uncool ESP if the player is and was from the start, friends w/ the dm. HOWEVER, it is possible that the dm trusted the players to understand the game and his rules more than they should’ve and that this wasn’t actually intentional cheating. I could see a situation where the player wasn’t super familiar with dnd or with logistical dm mechanisms of dnd, agreed to take on the responsibility of the npcs xp as a genuine act of accommodation and kindness, and believed themselves to understand the mechanics (and possibly also actively chose not to ask many clarifying questions or go to the dm w/ every application of the mechanic that the player did, out of a desire to take as much of that load as possible.) Considering that possibility, I def think the dm should have a genuine conversation with the player about it, bringing up their discovery of the players violation of the rules and giving the player a chance to explain themselves-(w/ the dm) taking care to clearly express their desire for honesty and transparency. Behind that If I were the dm, the player taking advantage of me like that would genuinely bother me bc even if the player and I weren’t really friends when we began the campaign, after playing so much with them I would see them as a friend. So if the dm is bothered by this, and does see the player in question as their friend, especially if they were friends before and outside of the campaign, I think the dm should speak plainly and earnestly with the player, about how the situation made them feel; not simply as their dm but as their friend. In other words, i believe it’d probably be good for the dm and for the dm& the player’s friendship, for the dm to express to the player how the player taking advantage of the dms trust&circumstances hurt the dms feelings and/or felt like a betrayal not simply as a dm, but as a friend.

Summer Tribe

"so embarrassing not to know an aesop fable" a) it's pronounced eeeesop and b) there are a lot a lot a lot of aesop's fables

Grays the Fae

Love y’all but the conflation of PhDs and MDs in this ep made me crazy….. please do not let the Linguistics PhD into the OR !!!

Wandering Giant

a storm sorc has to have cast a spell that turn. If you want to fly over a 50ft wall as a storm sorcerer, it will take 5 rounds and 5 spell slots

Garrett Durham

I get why they say to use Kenku but idk if I trust a DM who is this inflexible would allow them to play a kenku who speaks however they want and not in the mimicry way

Robert de Forest

The topic of how to lead players comes up a lot in the context of the railroading vs prep questions. My suggestion is to lean on players being a little bit like airplane pilots: the easiest way to get them to do something is to tell them they can't

Ty Cammenga

THE EAGLES IN LORD OF THE RINGS DO TALK JUST NOT IN THE MOVIES THEY ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT AND EXTREMELY POWERFUL

millung13

This is the moment Murph started to soften on Koc.

Gracious judges please make a glow in the dark shirt that says, "You got to remember that shirts can glow in the dark sometimes..."

Where does sweet blue hole come from?

AgedGouda

I bet the reason for the nat 1 logo is some game systems want you to roll under ur target (like dragonbane, so I’m told). So the 1 is the best number

Kaidan C

Relistening to these is so funny, you really catch when they just missed a crucial detail in the submitter’s post
