[WIP] Gun Modeling · Painting the Face and Belly (Patreon)
Content
Continuing from last time, I’ll start by modeling the assault rifle.
Since I finished the front sight last week, I’ll now create the rear sight. I’ve made it, but since this sight isn’t actually used, it’s been folded down. Continuing from last week, I’ve split the rifle vertically in half to make it easier to create the symmetrical parts.
I’ll make the scope in front of the rear sight. Now that the general shape is complete, I’ll refine the details.
I’ll make a hole in the muzzle.
Next, I’ll refine the area between the muzzle and the magazine. This is what it looks like before refinement.
I’ve added texture and holes.
I’ll create a vertical grip on the lower part. I checked the explanation of the gun’s source material on this character’s walkthrough site to see which grip was the reference, but the shape didn’t quite match, so I searched extensively on my own until I found an explanation from someone who seemed to have the correct information and used that to create it.
Next, I’ll refine the stock. This is before the revision.
This is after the revision. Since the character artbook showed one hole that didn’t go all the way through, I adjusted it to match the artbook.
Next is the center section. This is before the revision.
I added the safety lever near the top of the grip. At this point, I’d finished all the symmetrical parts of the gun, so I undid the mirror image to restore the gun to its original state.
From here on, I’ll refine the non-symmetrical parts. I’ll create these by closely observing the ridges and grooves on the safety mechanism and the magazine area.
Next is the right side of the gun. This is before refinement.
This is after refinement. I’ll add the ridges and grooves on the magazine, the ejection port, and that mysterious cylinder sticking out. That mysterious cylinder is seriously a mystery.
With that, the modeling of the assault rifle is complete. It looks cool, doesn’t it?
Next, I’ll scale it down to fit the character. That wraps up the shaping phase of the modeling process.
Since I haven’t done the UV mapping or texturing yet, the character’s colors aren’t set or look all over the place. She’s wearing tights, but the skin and underwear textures are still visible, so it looks pretty bad. I’ll work on fixing that.
Before that, even though I won’t be using it in the video, I’ll go ahead and model the helmet. I’ll also create shape keys so the hair gets pushed back toward the neck by the helmet.
Now let’s move on to texturing. First up is the face. This is before the revisions.
This is after the revisions. I repainted the mouth, nose, eyes, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Painting the eyes really brought out her unique personality. Since I kept the hair color the same, she looks like one of the original concepts from the reference materials.
Next is texturing the abdomen. This is the original abdomen.
I textured the contours of the abs and hip bones. That's a nice belly.
That’s all for this week’s progress.
Next, I think I’ll start by blending the color differences at the seams of the body textures to make them less noticeable.
