Here's the next comic from my "lost comics" series. You can see previous lost comics here. This one was drawn in December 2016 and I believe it was based on an actual event. Someone had played a Pithing Needle in a tournament, and they accidentally mispronounced the card they named, which of course garnered a bunch of discussion across social media. Should it matter that the card's name was said wrong or should the intent of the player matter more? I don't actually remember now if it was Kiki-Jiki or some other card that was named. Maybe one of you remember? Anyway, my memory was that this happened during a tournament as part of the SCG circuit. It was such an obscure event, you can probably understand why I decided to never share this before. Even worse, I now see that I misspelled Pithing Needle in the last panel! Oh well, not every comic can be a winner.

I definitely don't believe I've seen this comic before :) .

Rose

The event I believe was naming Borborygmos, instead of Borborygmos Enraged, unless that was a different SCG event entirely. I don't believe you are allowed to name something a card that doesn't exist with pithing needle.

Mordrithan

I believe you are correct Rose. I saw video about it and just glad never got into competative side of MTG. Yes, was a legitimate move saying didn't declare right Borborygmos but player knew who his opponent meant 100%, felt so scuzzy watching

Saskia

Haaha, this brings back memories, we had the same kind of judge calls, in tournaments, casual play, whatever 😂 in the end it became a running joke 😅 I think I remember someone even having a small piece of paper next to them, with the correct name(s) on it, just to be sure 🤭

Robert Spremulli

Considering that the whole point is card being misnamed, the "typo" is actually a meta joke!

Tzu-Chi Hsu

You should have released the comic back then. It's not only relevant, but also hilarious!

Cardboard Crack

That didn't take long. Yeah, now that you say it, this was definitely the event. I knew you would come through, thanks!

Cardboard Crack

Thanks, you're too kind. It's not uncommon for me to be super excited about a comic, but then when I go to post it a few days later, I'm no longer in the same mood and I'm hesitant to post it. This happens with some of my more critical comics about WotC as well.

Rose

It is sad to hear you say you're glad you never got into the competitive side because of this event. Competitive can be a ton of fun and these incidents really are far and few between.

Morten

What with the Marvel 'Through the Omenpaths' debacle, I think this comic is still somewhat relevant. If an opponent is only used to playing Arena, there's no clarification yet on the treatment the physical card will have to make the game equate the different versions. "I cast Needle. On resolution I name 'Through-the-Omenpaths Man Spider'." Opponent who only knows physical paper versions: "What card is that?" And vice versa.

David Buchmann

can only second what rose is saying: i have been to a bunch of competitive tournaments and most of the people where nice and friendly. obviously it *is* competitive, so no take-backs or helping the opponent (which basically is like playing online, once you pointed to something, or went to the next phase, there is no undo). i do like the challenge of giving my best.

David Buchmann

Too bad kiki-jiki is not played in modern anymore, that would 100% have been the new name for it :D

Mordrithan

Eh, I tried couple competative events and honestly just was never fun playing them. I did not enjoy the time I spent and just left me with a dissatisfied feeling of having wasted that time and any good mood may have had not doing really anything else. Some things just not for everyone

Cardboard Crack

Ha, yeah, good suggestion. I have so many thoughts about eh Omenpaths debacle, I haven't decided what comics I want to make about it. Maybe I'll wait to see how bad it really is first (although I can't imagine it going well even if the execution is perfect)

Cardboard Crack

Alas, Modern is so different from what I used to know and love about it. *Sigh*

Cardboard Crack

Yeah, it's great that there are so many ways to play Magic these days. In the past, everything was dominated by competitive events. I personally like playing casual with people I know, but when it comes to people I don't know, I like competitive formats more where everyone's goals are clearly defined.
