Last post I mentioned that a friend is having a Magic tournament as part of his birthday celebration, but I didn't say what the format was. There were some good guesses yesterday, but no one got it. I think I've made everyone wait long enough, so it's now time for the reveal. The format is...

IPA block constructed! Yes, we're going to enjoy drinking IPAs while we play IPA.

Here's the deck I put together today:

What do you think? My thoughts are with only enemy colored pain lands, you really should play wedge colors in this format (the color combinations from Khans of Tarkir). The format itself is pretty interesting. There are basically no good one drops. There are very few good cheap red removal cards. And so many of the cards are two-for-ones. It makes for a very grindy, mid-rangey format.

I thought about building white-blue-red instead (Lightning Angel is a pretty sweet card), but I was especially excited about Blurred Mongoose to fight all the targeted removal. I also love how you can just hold up 4 mana to play Mystic Snake, and if your opponent doesn't cast anything you can just Fact or Fiction at the end step.

If there are any cards I'm missing or you think I should switch around, let me know. Should be a fun time!

I hope IPA doesn't stand for Isopropyl alcohol.

I hope the main reason for running this format is the IPA pun. That said, format seems sweet; I, for one, love casting FTK's :)

What does IPA stand for? Looks like classic frames only?

Same question here!

Cardboard Crack

Oh no, I should have been more clear. IPA stands for Invasion/Planeshift/Apocalypse block.

Ty_Sylicus

Ah. So it's block constructed then!

I am aware, just at a time I wasn't playing. It seems a cool format, but I also want it to be because of the IPA pun because that makes a funnier story XD

I think you leave a lot of value on the table with FTKs not in the main deck. It's hard to make cuts, but unless you hit T2 Skyfolk, those are just gonna get killed by opposing FTKs. I'd cut some amount of Repulse for them. Modern deck theory is gonna win out over nostalgia, but I don't think most decks can play very few creatures (maybe just tog or a dedicated burn deck, which is still gonna FTK you).

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess my thinking was I wanted to play a 2 drop early and then mostly play on my opponent’s turn the rest of the game. I also wasn’t sure if FTKs would be increasing the mana curve too much on a deck that already has a pretty bad one. But all of this was me theory crafting more than actual playtesting.

Thanks, it’s not much of a brew, but it does all the things I like to do in Magic
