I don't want to throw any shade, but it cracks me up that some of the most sought after, expensive cards in Commander are some of the least fun. Cards like Rhystic Study, Cyclonic Rift, Smothering Tithe, and Esper Sentinel. I thought it was supposed to be a fun format!

Craterhoof too should be on that list. Some people's definition of 'fun' baffles me, which is why 'pub games' can be such a mixed bag. Though I have been noticing that sales of some of those cards are down in demand now that they are on the Game Changers list.

It's interesting, on the flip side, I've been talking to old Magic players recently, getting into Commander and when chatting with them, discovering that they are having real difficulty with the idea of not playing to win. These aren't spikes, grinders or anything like that; they are pretty chill, casual people playing in our Premodern and Pauper events, but they've always played 1v1 or 2hg Magic for multiple decades, and while Magic is fun and chill for them, whatever sort of deck they are building, it's always built with the mindset of winning the game. The idea of building a deck without winning in mind is genuinely baffling and confusing to them. I can very much see a player who plays Commander only getting upset at a mention of players like these: "How do they not understand building decks for fun? Do they not know what fun is?" Which is why I insist so much that this is not the case; they love the game and play casually. It's just that when faced with the idea of building a deck that's not designed for winning, they get very confused, a lot like a grandparent gets when they don't comprehend something like the internet, or whatever else their children/grandchildren find natural and obvious because they grew up with it. It's actually pretty sweet and adorable :)

What's the point of playing a game if you are not trying ot win? You know what's not fun? Playing a deck that stalls the game where nobody wins.

I don't know, for the social aspect of playing a game with friends? Discover neat interactions, play with cards that didn't have enough power to be played in other formats, banter, politics (in-game), etc I'm one of those players who enjoy winning, but that's not my main goal when I play a multiplayer game. I want to see those jank rares get played. What I dislike is shuffling up, and having a game be over within 20 mins because one player got too far ahead and no one was able to stop them.

I feel called out by this comic.

Yeah, just stalling the game for no reason isn't exactly fun. But it can be fun to just use Magic as a vehicle to get together with friends, have drinks, and chill. That's more or less how I see Commander.

Yeah, good points. It's nice at least that there are a lot of different outlets/formats for people to play so that people can find the experience they want. The flip side is that I'm pretty spoiled because I'm in Los Angeles, and I could imagine in smaller communities it can be hard to find the kind of games you want.

Yeah, here in NZ we don't have that luxury. Outside of perhaps Auckland (and who wants to actively live there), competitive magic no longer exists anywhere in the country. It's sad to see long-time friends in the community start to drift away because there's close to nothing left in the game for them. A friend of mine was sad that prereleases no longer interest him because they are always 3 rounds and don't offer any actual prizes for doing well (pack per win). I've ranted about this before, but our "Regional Championship" is in an entirely different country. The RCQs only get 6-8 players because most people don't want to travel internationally to play in a championship event that Wizards offers zero support for. You may have a garbage dictator of a president, but at least you get to play the types of magic you want to play whenever you want <3. USA, UK, Europe, Japan- if you don't live in these places, competitive magic is basically dead aside from an occasional GP (whatever they are called now) that might come to a country next to yours (not your country, though) /sigh... now I'm just left feeling sad and envious.
