Here's the next update in my series on decks I have. Elves first really became a thing for me during Onslaught block. There were just so many awesome elves in Onslaught and Legions. A lot of them were at lower rarities, like Wellwisher and Timberwatch Elf, which made them awesome to draft. This led me getting excited about elves and eventually making an elf deck, which you can see an old version of here:

Two things to note. First, there's the clear sleeves. I can't remember the last time I used clear sleeves like this! Second, there's the Ultra Pro deck box the sleeves came in. These deck boxes came with 100 sleeves and were the perfect size for a sleeved 60 card deck. I still have a couple dozen of these boxes to hold decks in. It's really a shame Ultra Pro doesn't use these anymore.

Eventually, once I collected all the typical cards needed for a competitive Elves Legacy Deck, I resleeved the deck with KMCs.

Remember when KMC sleeves were the best? If you don't know the story, when KMC was bought by another company and their sleeves went to crap, I made this comic:

Ultra Pro saw this, and actually surprised me by sending me a thoughtful note and a big sample of Eclipse sleeves:

which was pretty funny. I've heard though that KMCs are now better. Do you guys know about any updates on this?

Okay, that was quite a digression. Here's my full Elves Deck if you're interested:

If you've ever played with or against Legacy Elves, you know this isn't a cute creature deck but rather a combo deck. It's of course pretty pricey to build these days, but you have to remember that many of the cards, like the Gaea's Cradles and Unlimited Bayous, I've had basically forever. If you're looking closely, you may notice that there are slightly less than 60 cards here. That's because I've borrowed a few cards out of the deck for my cube and my Animar Commander deck. Can you spot which cards are missing?

Okay, that's it for this look at one of my decks. Hope you enjoyed it!

The Professor did a review of the updated KMC's and he liked them.

Stephen Hines

Based on conversations with other Old School players over the past year+, KMC seems to have fixed their quality issues. I was never a fan though, and preferred Dragon Shield mattes for a long time until having to switch to Katanas because they're thin enough to work in normal deckboxes for double-sleeved decks. BTW, if you double sleeve and haven't tried out the Dragon Shield sealable inner sleeves, you should really try some.

Cardboard Crack

That's exciting to hear. I'll have to check out what he said.

Cardboard Crack

Thanks. I have some decks with Dragon Shields, but they always seem so sharp to me and because they're thicker, they don't fit into some of my deck boxes. I've never tried Katanas, but maybe I should. I still just use the KMC inner sleeves, so I'll have to check out the sealable ones you mention.

Larry Killian

You need the new Jumpstart elf. I'm in the process of building Legacy Elves. Missing 2 Cradles.

Cardboard Crack

You mean Allosaurus Shepherd? The only thing more bonkers than how good that card is, is how much it costs.

Larry Killian

If I get a second one I'll let you know and I'm sure we can work a deal :). It pretty much shuts down control against Elves.

Cardboard Crack

Ha, that sounds good. Do people ever play blue in Legacy?

Lily Bogusz

Have you tried ultra pro eclipses? I don't have any kmc products besides perfect fits, but according to the professor at least shuffle feel is like on par with old kmcs, and I really like the black interior and the half glazed fronts. Curious to hear how it'd stack up

Stephen Hines

I've seen the Eclipse previously at some of our meetups. While it seems like they shuffle fine, I don't like the fronts as they dull the look of foils and other artwork too. Since I try to use the same sleeves for all of my decks, this is a no, since I play Premodern with a lot of foils.

Cardboard Crack

Yeah, I agree that the Eclipses have a pretty nice shuffle feel (but still not as good as the old KMCs) but they do dull the look of foils. For this reason, I mostly use them for my cube and when I do drafts, but not for my nice Commander decks. Ultra Pro does have some new Eclispes with the same back but with a clear front that is supposed to fix this problem. I haven't tried them though.

Don't know how relevant this is but I do have an Allosaurus Shepard for trade

Kevin Roman

wow they actually apologized, that's really nice. I felt the same way when Ys IX made so many improvements over Ys VIII irritable girl and dandruff boomer.
