Arena Cube Draft (Patreon)
Content
Tonight I tried some Arena Cube Draft. I think it's pretty fun and skill intensive. The first deck I drafted was a blue/white control deck with a splash of black:
Wraths are super good in this format because everyone is playing creatures. The colorless ramp was also good. And wow, Hostage Taker was an all-star. It's like control Magic on a creature. You can also get pretty good mana in this format. There's a lot of multi-colored lands. The only thing I think I was missing was some good counters. This hurt in the control vs control match ups because I couldn't stop their card draw spells. I ended up going 4-3 with this deck.
Next I drafted a blue/red tempo deck:
This deck was probably worse because, as you can probably see, I was a little short on playables. It was fun though because blue/red is my favorite color combination. Rielle ended up being quite a bit better than I expected. You can use it with cycling, or an especially cool combo I got a few times were with Magmatic Channeler. Discard a card to draw a card and then play one of the next two cards from your deck? Yes please! Another combo I got off a couple times was Sea Gate Stormcaller with Chart a Course. Two mana to draw four cards? I was super worried about my mana, but somehow I got two duals in my last three picks of the draft. What? Again, I went 4-3. What this deck was missing was some good blue tempo cards, like Into the Roil, because I had lot of trouble with big green creatures.
Anyway, I recommend trying this out. Something to tide us over until Vintage Cube comes back to MTGO next week.
