So, story time with old man Mark! Back in the beginning, the use of lands and mana were representations of not only your affinity for a type of magic, but also your connection to the plane you were on. The rule book (printed on paper and included in starters) began with the phrase "You are a planeswalker." ideally, the longer you were in a place the more connected you became and the more power you could draw from it. This is reflected in the playing of more lands. Mana screw is you not bothering to connect to your sources of power you slackers!

Thanks! Not being able to connect to your source of power... feels like there's an impotence joke in there somewhere...

This is also how the Ice Age books explain the concept of lands and mana in Magic.

I have been working on a new format where you will never get mana screwed or have bad draws, and I believe I finally got it!

I call it Spellbook, where you basically play with your deck in your hands. 50-card Standard deck (otherwise too OP). You still win normally.

lol fun to change the art style for planeswalkers.
