I have been be-fucking-WITCHED by Tetris 99. I play it some, but there's a level of competition when you get into the top ten that is deeply unlike the game I played to get in there.
In truth, somehow, it's a similar dynamic to that which happens in Battle Royale games. Depending on where you land, the first fifteen minutes of these games can be something like shopping in a post-apocalyptic mall. There are no prices. There may be the occasional corpse. Every store is stocked exclusively with guns and armor. And then all the sudden it's you and an apex predator and it's over. So somebody at my level of talent in either context very rarely has an opportunity to test themselves against the True Game and is thus always underprepared.
It's like that in Tetris 99 also - should you last until the end, it ceases to be a game about mitigation and instead becomes a game about giant rocks falling on your head. I enjoy playing it, and it's a genius play by Nintendo, but eventually I know that it's my destiny to become a food source for lethal raptors. This, as much anything else, makes it a true entry in the BR genre.
Hey! So, we finally got a couple podcasts recorded, and they'll be coming out for you soon - put together a This Old Lair last night, and recorded a couple other ones with Elyssa and Ryan about special RPG projects we have coming down the pike. There's some secrets in those last two, so they'll drop when they gotta drop, but I really enjoyed ranging a little further afield with This Old Lair stuff and I might have guests on with greater frequency. For example, we got a half hour into it on the book, Elyssa and I, and I think there's at least another show in that if not two. So yeah. I'll try to maintain a healthy cadence on this stuff from here on out, and hopefully with our book and game projects wrapping up soon it'll be easier to do.
Until next time,
