Some details of an accident in the second paragraph that might be distressing to some. Just putting that here first.

Calum Fairburn was a top research scientist before he left and became an army medic, after the death of his brother in combat.

After a horrific accident that should have claimed his life, Calum's body was sent to a research facility, as per his wishes, for his body to be used for scientific research. His back was broken in three places, his lungs were punctured, he lost his right leg just above mid-thigh, and his left below the knee. His left arm was lost too, just below the shoulder joint, and his right below the elbow. His face was heavily scarred,  his eyesight and hearing damaged, and he required almost complete rebuilding. Most of his body is now machine, and he has no real need to eat, but he does need water, and has very little need to sleep (in fact he finds it very difficult to sleep at all).

He never imagined he'd be brought back to life in the name of science when he died, but still, it happened, and he's come to terms with it now. He now works as a government scientist, working in cybernetics, both as a living case study, and as a researcher in his own right. He was one of the first models, and was nicknamed 'Adam' until he woke up and remembered most of who he was in 'life'.

There is another (completely) android working there, who is a much later generation, called Toshi, who looks up to him and practically worships him.

Calum's circuits hurt him a lot sometimes, he experiences calibration pains and spasms sometimes, and if he gets damaged, he could die without his breathing/life support, because he is still partly human, biologically speaking as well as mentally.

He's also a complete sweetie, who gets a bit glitchy when he's around someone he finds attractive...

Interesting idea. Do Calum’s family and friends know that he didn’t actually die?

I’m going with them believing he is dead as the mysterious organisation that rebuilt Calum will have arranged for a death certificate and a coroner’s report to prevent said family asking awkward questions. While Calmun might not have been warned not to contact them, he’s probably decided the shock of him being alive and more Dyson than son would be too much for his parents to cope with.
