Time for December's story! I know Twelve Days of Monstermas is coming up, but that doesn't mean business as usual stops! Here's 4900 words of love in a cold climate...
With a sigh you leaned your elbows on the bar top and took a long drink. Six months in to your year abroad in Japan, and things were not quite as Romantic and wonderful as you’d thought they might be. You knew it was going to be a huge adventure, and that you’d have ups and downs, but working remotely was proving tough, and the ryokan you were staying in for this part of the year was about as far from the minimalist, clean tatami mats and sliding doors of Pinterest. The food was horrible, the room was freezing, and now that winter was well and truly closing in, you spent as much of your spare time away from it as you could, going back only to wash and sleep. Hence, you found yourself in a bar at ten o’clock at night, a short walk from the traditional hostel, two beers down and more homesick than you’d ever imagined you could be. In fact, you were the next thing to throwing in the towel and getting a flight home.
An oni with blazing red skin and massive lower and upper tusks, approached from behind the bar and cast you a pitying look. Her English was pretty good, and you offered her a smile as she asked you what was wrong. Despite your closed-off nature, you found yourself telling her everything. Yes, Japan was truly stunning, and you’d learned so much, and met some incredible people in your first six months, but you were lonely, cold, barely making enough money to keep paying for your shitty room, and you were basically now at rock bottom.
“What you need is to visit an onsen and just switch off - get out of the city for a while,” she said. “Here,” and she pulled out a card from her back pocket. “This is run by my cousin. It’s about a couple of hours by bus from the city centre, up the mountain, and it’s amazing. It’s not expensive, but the baths and the hot springs are just incredible, and the food is great too. You won’t regret it. Treat yourself. I promise you’ll feel better.”
You had to smile at her kindness, and accepted the business card with gracious thanks.
A day or two later, instead of sitting on a plane home, you found yourself sitting on the bus with a backpack at your feet, the windows fogging up as the vehicle climbed through the remote, mountainside forests towards the hot spring spa. Snow blanketed the landscape as far as the eye could see, and it was still falling as you approached your stop and the orc driving it hollered out that this was your stop. This was going to be a good thing, you told yourself over and over, repeating it like a mantra until you almost believed it.
The place was definitely idyllic. The onsen looked like it had been designed to fulfil every traveller’s picture postcard desires, from the steeply sloping roofs of the main building, to the neatly swept path up to the doors, the braziers burning with oddly purple flames, and the soft chime of bells from somewhere inside.
As the bus drew away in a wet slosh of wheels on rough tarmac, you made your way up to the entrance. A dark-feathered tengu sat behind the reception desk and welcomed you inside. Seeing that you were obviously not native to the area, she stood as you approached, and you smiled a warm greeting at her. “Hi,” you said, feeling awkward.
“Hello,” she replied, her voice croaky but friendly. “Welcome to our bath house. Have you ever been to a hot springs before?”
Feeling no small degree of trepidation, you shook your head. “I was recommended to come here by someone I met back in the city. She said her cousin runs it, and that this was the best place to come and unwind…”
“Oh!” she laughed. “You mean Kaori?” she asked, and when you nodded, her black eyes widened, and she immediately went into full ‘hostess’ mode. “Please, come this way! Let me talk you through your first onsen experience!”
True to her word, she guided you through the rules - no shoes, bathers must be naked (that one was a bit of a shocker), you must wash first before entering any of the pools, don’t let your hair touch the water… - and when she was finally done reciting rules and advice, she wished you a wonderful experience, reminded you again that phones were not permitted in the bath areas, and left you to it.
You’d been in Japan long enough that you’d picked up a decent chunk of the language and could even read a few of the kanji, so you found your way through the changing rooms and showers with ease. The first place she had recommended you try was the ice bath. That… sounded less appealing than a long hot soak in a searing hot pool, but you figured that you should at least try everything while you were here.
It was as hellishly cold as you’d expected, with huge chunks of ice floating in the pool, and when your skin was goose-prickled and almost numb, you hauled yourself out and headed straight for the steaming hot springs outside.
Snow lay thick across the landscape, and as you clutched your tiny little modesty towel to your lower regions, you paused and simply gaped at the view. You were shivering, but even that couldn’t distract you from the scene in front of you. The eaves of the onsen building jutted out to protect at least a part of one of the pools, and billowing clouds of steam rose in drifting shrouds from the water. Smooth rocks lined the edges of each of the three pools you could see, one of which was slightly lower in a little valley of its own, and was partly fed by a waterfall. As you made your way over to the nearest pool, your feet scuffing pleasantly on the rough, cold stones of the path, you caught a flash of movement out of the corner of your eye.
A figure rose from the waterfall pool, her slender body pale, though her cheeks and her breasts were flushed pink with the chill of the air, and her hair was tied back in a bun atop her head. She was too far away for you to see any detail, but something you couldn’t help but notice was that her hair was a shocking, snowy white. It didn’t look dyed, and you found yourself staring shamelessly at her as she rose up and stepped out of the water. She was so beautiful that you couldn’t be certain that she wasn’t some spirit or kami of the place.
Then, as you watched, the air around her seemed to ripple, and she dropped down to all fours. As she landed, she shifted and became a small, perfectly white, arctic fox. She was a kitsune then. Before she caught you staring, you managed to kick your semi-frozen brain back into gear, and directed your steps towards the pool. It was almost scalding to the touch, so you took up the tengu’s advice and gently acclimatised yourself to the temperature with little splashes of water. By the time you had worked your steady way up to your hips, pouring the water down your body until your skin prickled with the heat, you had been joined by the kitsune.
She bounded up the last of the stairs from the lower pool, and as she arrived at the top, she shifted effortlessly, the glacially white fur melting away into the mist from the pools as she rose up on two legs again. When she saw you standing there, she cast you the most beautiful smile you’d ever seen, and greeted you softly in polite Japanese. She rinsed off her feet and then simply stepped straight into the water, sitting down into it with a soft moan of pleasure. As the tide of water swept up her body, you found it hard not to stare at the gentle curve of her waist and the way her small breasts looked as they disappeared beneath the surface. A moment later, you joined her in sinking all the way into the pool.
“You must have come a long way to be here,” she murmured softly in Japanese, clearly wondering if you’d prefer the solitude of silence or the companionship of quiet conversation.
You nodded and said falteringly, “Yes. I am staying in the city, but I was told that I should visit here.”
“Your Japanese is pretty good,” she laughed, her black eyes glittering.
“I’m about to run out of things I know how to say,” you admitted, and she immediately switched languages.
“We don’t have to speak Japanese,” she said with a lilting accent. “I’m Yuki,” she said.
She was enchanting. Her conversation wasn’t intrusive, and she judged when to leave a pause long enough for you to soak up the atmosphere of the place, and when to speak. She made you smile, asked you about what you were doing here, showed a genuine interest in your answers, and by the time you were well and truly lightheaded from the heat, she had even made you laugh once or twice. However, when she said, “It must be lonely for you… being here away from everything you know, and in a country where we don’t speak your language,” something cracked in your chest.
“You have no idea,” you choked, feeling your throat closing up and your eyes welling with tears. “It’s awful sometimes,” you said. And then, like the sudden, unexpected, rushing eruption of a geyser, everything you’d bottled up for the last five or so months, just surged out of you in a rush of sobbing and gasping. You knew this was wildly inappropriate, but somehow you couldn’t stop, and that just made it worse.
Midway through your hysterical rant, you heard the sloshing of water, and nearly leapt out of your skin when you felt her arm close gently around your shoulders. The weight of it steadied you, but she asked nothing more of you. She held you quietly while you cried, and let you exhaust yourself with wracking sobs. When you eventually had nothing left, she smiled softly and asked, “Do you have somewhere to stay tonight?”
You shook your head. “No. I planned to find somewhere nearby, but the bus was delayed because of the snow, and I forgot to ask at the reception about places to stay. Do you think it’s too late?” Your eyes burned with the salt from your crying, and your throat remained raw and tight, even though the tears had abated for the time being.
Yuki shrugged. “Perhaps. Look, I live nearby, just up the road. I’d love it if you came to stay for the night.”
Ordinarily, you would never have accepted, but riding the strangely euphoric wave of your outpouring of despair, you felt like you had nothing left to lose, and so nodded and thanked her. She rubbed a small circle between your shoulder blades once more and then let go of you. She rose up out of the water right there beside you, heedless of her naked body, and it was all you could do not to turn and look at her. It was not only the hair on her head that was completely white. It had been a long time since you’d been intimate with anyone, and the fact that she was physically so close, and so beautiful, made it doubly poignant to you.
She held out her elegant, slender hand to you, and said, “Come on. I think you have been in here long enough. Let’s go and get dressed. I’ll get you some milk too - it’s honestly the best thing to have after a bath. Trust me!”
And you did, and not just with the milk.
Yuki told you, as the two of you made your way out of the baths and up the snow-cleared road, that her house had belonged to her grandmother and then her mother. Yuki had studied abroad for university, and while she’d been away, her parents had been killed in a terrible car accident. She had returned and had lived with her grandmother in the house for a while, before her grandmother had passed away, leaving her all alone.
“Yuki, I’m so sorry,” you murmured, snow drifting down harder now as night descended around the pair of you. You could barely see two yards in front of you, but it seemed to be no hindrance to her.
She shrugged. “Thank you,” she said. “It wasn’t easy at first. Kitsunes are very close with our family. It’s been difficult being on my own these last few years. But I have good friends in the area. I’ll introduce you to them if you like!”
“You’re so generous,” you commented, and then as she turned off the main road towards a traditional wooden house, you gasped. “This is your house?” you asked.
She nodded and grinned. It wasn’t large, in fact it was almost poky looking, but it was stunningly built, using traditional methods, and there was a little fox statue by the door which she bowed at as she slid her boots off on the front step. You followed suit, taking your shoes off and bringing them inside into the little foot well, placing them neatly beside hers.
Her home was beautiful. It was simply furnished, but there were little pieces of her life tucked away in corners; photographs here and trinkets there.
“Come!” she giggled. “You must be starving. I have lots of food. I made a big hotpot and left it cooking this morning.”
The meal was wonderful, and you thanked her profusely. Once again, conversation flowed easily, and the two of you were laughing like old friends by the end of the night, though after a series of jaw-popping yawns, you said, “I’m so sorry, but I think I need to go to bed. It’s been a long day.”
“Of course,” she smiled. “Here, let me show you to my guest room.”
There was a peace and harmony to the house with its perfect proportions and humble furnishings. She took you upstairs to her spare room and as you turned to thank her, she simply smiled at you. “Please,” she said. “I’m glad I met you. And I’m glad to be able to offer shelter to someone. I know what it is like to be in another country. I wish I’d had someone to help me.”
“Bless you,” you said, feeling tears in your eyes again. “And thank you so much.”
With a smile, and a quietly whispered, “Goodnight,” she left you to sort yourself out, and as you lay down on the mattress, staring up at the ceiling, you felt calm for the first time in months. That fact struck you like the proverbial lightning bolt, and you lay there, stunned, that such an act of kindness from a total stranger could provoke a feeling as intense as this.
You slept better that night than you had since arriving in Japan, and Yuki insisted that she show you around and introduce you to some folks in the mountain top village. You worked remotely, so you knew you were going to have to get connected to the internet soon, and when you asked her, she said there was a cute cafe just below the onsen, run by an onikuma, where you could set up your laptop. She took you there and introduced you to the owner, who was a good friend of hers, and while she went to do her shopping, you sat there and got in a few hours’ work.
The onikuma was a massive brown bear, with the most adorably fluffy ears you’d ever seen, and he made the best cakes and coffee you’d ever tasted. “Is everything alright?” he asked, wandering over to you after perhaps an hour.
“It’s perfect!” you said, and he beamed at you, showing sharp teeth but in a wide, friendly smile. “Do you mind me working while I’m here? I need to connect to the internet, and Yuki said her house doesn't have internet…”
“That’s fine!” he exclaimed. “Let me bring you another coffee. Would you like more cake?”
“What? Oh, sure,” you said, fishing in your pocket for your wallet.
“No, no,” he said, waving a massive paw. “Please, my gift.”
“Why is everyone here so nice?” you asked him impulsively, and he simply laughed.
When he brought you another drink and a slice of a different cake, you looked up at him and smiled gratefully.
“Take it easy,” he said, his words broken and a bit uncertain. “And let Yuki take care of you.”
When Yuki came back, her arms groaning with shopping bags, you packed up and helped her carry the groceries back to her house. The cold wind had picked up, and as she shivered, you watched her face shift and become vulpine until she was standing beside you still the same height as she had been in her human form, but with soft, downy white fur covering her arms and legs, and her face was that of a fox. Her ears flicked, and she grinned at you, all sharp teeth and glittering, playful eyes.
“Useful,” you commented, nuzzling down into your collar to escape the bite of the wind.
“Isn’t it?” she giggled. “My kind was born for the cold! We’re nearly home though. I’ll light the fire when we get back, and you’ll soon warm up. How was your day? Did you get all your work done?”
You nodded, feeling something twist in your stomach. It was so perfect here. You didn’t want to go back to that awful little ryokan in the city now. You wanted to stay here with her. It didn’t help that, unlike the humans you’d encountered so far, she was quite free with her touches and hugs, and you had found yourself drawn to her, body and spirit, since that first gorgeous glimpse of her in the waters of the onsen.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, juggling the house keys in one hand and the shopping in her other.
“I suppose I can’t stay with you for too much longer,” you said as you stepped inside and removed your shoes.
As you helped her unpack the shopping, she turned and shrugged shyly. “I’ve been thinking for a while about having a roommate or house mate…” she said quietly. “I wouldn’t ask much rent - just contributions to things like firewood and electricity and food…” Her unfathomably fluffy tail thrashed briefly back and forth behind her and she turned away. “I understand if you don’t want to stay out here. I mean, this village is remote, and you don’t really know me, but… I’d like it if you wanted to stay.”
“Are you serious?” you gasped. “It’s perfect here! Trust me, I’ve already told you what the ryokan is like where I’m staying. It’s awful. I’d love to stay with you, but I don’t want to impose…”
With a shrill yip of delight, Yuki dropped the bag of rice she’d been holding - mercifully it didn’t split open - and threw her arms around you. “I’m so pleased,” she said. “I just know we’re going to get along so well!”
She pulled back, shifted again from her fox form to her human one, and then kissed you on the cheek. It was only a fleeting gesture, but having been so rarely touched lately, you’d felt physically starved of touch and affection for so long that the gesture almost brought tears to your eyes all over again.
Yuki didn’t seem to notice, and had turned back to unpacking the groceries, but she said, “We should have a tea party to celebrate! I’ll ask Kazuo if he’ll bake us something specially for it!”
On the evening of Yuki’s celebratory tea party a week or so later, you dressed in your nicest clothes which, to be perfectly honest, were very ordinary, and arrived downstairs just as she opened the door to her guests. She’d warned you in advance that they were all of supernatural stock, none of them being human, but you said you didn’t mind, as long as you knew the various etiquettes and what to expect.
The first to be invited in was a rather intimidating looking noppera-bō. The faceless ghost glided in, her kimono a warm lilac with hints of pink and gold thread, and she embraced Yuki warmly. She carried a lantern on a pole in one hand, which she set down in a corner of the hall, seemingly perfectly at ease in her surroundings. Behind her was the familiar face of the onikuma, Kazuo, and behind him, once he’d wiped his massive paws and stepped over to greet you, came a huge oni who had to stoop as she passed under the doorway. Her red skin glowed in the cold, and she looked so startlingly like the bartender you’d spoken to back in the city that you knew she had to be the cousin who owned the onsen. Her long black hair spilled down her back and was studded with rapidly-melting snowflakes, like the ephemeral cherry blossom petals in spring. She was distractingly muscular, and attired in not very much, considering the temperature outside.
Introductions were made by Yuki, and you shook the noppera-bō’s pale hand, feeling a little apprehensive. Misaki wiped her other hand upwards over her face, and the ghostly features of a woman appeared, smiling kindly at you, and you tried your best not to look unnerved. The oni took your hand in a bone-crushing grip and grinned at you with her tusks all gleaming in the warm light of Yuki’s house. “Pleasure to meet you,” she said, and you felt your heart skip a beat at the sight of the muscles in her shoulders and the sound of her rich, husky voice. “I’m Hinata.”
Kazuo presented the most adorable and perfect cakes, and you all sat around and drank tea, chatting and laughing. You often sat back from the conversation, happy to let the amicable atmosphere wash over you, but they made sure to include you in the conversation too. Yuki stood up to clear the plates away once you’d all finished and declared you couldn’t fit so much as another crumb in your stomachs, but when you made to help her, she waved you back down and threatened you with making Kazuo sit on you to keep you from exerting yourself on your celebration night. Graciously, you agreed, and watched as Hinata stood to help, and cleared the last of the plates away.
“Kazuo, those cakes were incredible,” you groaned contentedly, and the big bear flicked an ear and turned his head bashfully away.
“I’m happy you liked them,” he said. “I’m really pleased to have met you… and Yuki seems so much brother too.”
Misaki, sitting beside the onikuma, nodded slowly in agreement, her face having vanished again now that she was no longer eating or drinking. Yuki’s friends were definitely unusual, but they’d asked you about the things you’d enjoyed about being there, and excitedly suggested all sorts of things you had to try, that they would be only too happy to do with you. For the first time in months you felt a small sense of belonging begin to kindle.
With a smile, you stood and stretched out your neck and shoulders. “Excuse me a moment?” you asked, slipping away to use the bathroom.
When you returned, your route took you past the open kitchen door, and you heard Yuki’s soft voice speaking in hushed tones to Hinata in rapid Japanese. In the months you’d been in the country, you’d picked up enough to follow along, though your spoken Japanese was still quite hesitant. “Yeah, I do think she’s cute,” Yuki sighed. “Like, super cute. But I don’t want to take advantage of her like that. I mean, I already know she’s into girls, but she’s also in a foreign country, and has been really low… I don’t want her to feel like I’m taking advantage…”
“If she wants it too, how is it taking advantage?” Hinata pointed out in an equally hushed but firm tone.
Your heart was pounding in your ears. All the times you’d sat together watching a movie or TV show in the last few weeks, all those glances, all those times you’d caught each other staring… and now you found out it meant something after all? It wasn’t just your touch starved body imagining things?
At the sound of footsteps, you beat a hasty retreat back to Kazuo and Misaki, and a moment later, Yuki and Hinata emerged from the kitchen. Yuki’s friends left not long after that, and you promised to go to the onsen with Misaki and Hinata soon, and waved jovially as they headed off down the road towards the village.
Yuki stood in the doorway, waving them off, and, taking a deep breath for courage, you approached her from behind and laid a hand on the small of her back. She jumped and turned to face you, closing the door and shutting out the winter cold.
“Thank you,” you said softly, still standing very close to her. “I really enjoyed that.”
“You did?” she asked, her black eyes going wide. “Oh good. I’m happy.” Her cheeks flushed when you made no move to step back from her, nor take your hand off her waist. She sank her teeth into her lip and swallowed nervously, breathing out your name.
At your reassuring smile, she tentatively brought her hands to your hips and tilted her face upwards.
“You’re so beautiful, Yuki,” you murmured. You could smell the sweet sugar of Kazuo’s cakes still, and suddenly you couldn’t stand the distance between you any longer.
Your lips crushed a kiss against hers and she moaned, bucking her hips against you, grabbing your hips and tugging herself as close as possible to you. Suddenly she gave a long, low keen and tipped her head right back. Her body shuddered and her skin began to ripple with unbelievably soft fur. “I’m sorry,” she gasped, ears pulling back. “I can’t control it when I…”
“It’s alright,” you smiled. “Let’s go somewhere more comfortable though.”
She grinned and tugged you playfully by the hand, leading you to her bedroom. She pushed you down onto her bed, still giggling with almost girlish excitement, and you saw that her white brush was fluffed up and twitching. She inhaled deeply as she ran her hands up under your top, and she sighed, “You smell so good…”
“I’m all yours,” you smiled, and she took the invitation for what it was. She had you out of your clothes in no time, and when she parted your legs with tender fingertips, she looked up at you, her fox ears tilted back in one last moment of silent, respectful hesitation. “Please,” you hissed, and she waited no longer.
Her tongue lapped over you in long, hot licks, taking in the taste of you with obvious relish. The delicacy of her tongue was unlike anything you’d ever experienced, and as she licked little rapid motions underneath your now-throbbing clit, you felt your back arch off the mattress. Her surprisingly strong grip pushed you back down, and she nosed her muzzle against you again. “Keep still,” she reprimanded you.
“I can’t!” you gasped as she pressed her cold nose directly against your clit, all the while laving her hot tongue around your folds, delighting in the taste and scent of your arousal.
The slightly leathery skin of her paw-like hands was black and a little rough, but she smiled as she brought the pad of her thumb to your clit a little while later, giving her tongue a short break. She looked up at your flushed body as she nudged and circled at you, tipping you closer and closer.
Yuki took her time with you, working over every inch of you, not just your clit and folds. She took your hard, pebbled nipples between her sharp teeth, adding delicious pressure while flicking her tongue rapidly back and forth until you thought you might just burst with all the sensations.
“Please!” you begged, chest heaving, heat coiled at your centre.
With a vulpine smile, she drew back and settled herself once more between your legs.
She worked her tongue in earnest now, using her nose as well, with her hands on your hip bones and her tail resting lightly across your ankles. The contrast of the pressure of her tongue and the feather-light touch of her tail was what finally tipped you over the edge into a clenching, rolling orgasm that made your vision go white.
As your heartbeat eventually slowed, you opened your eyes and found that she had snuggled up beside you and was watching you. “You come so beautifully,” she smiled.
“I don’t think I’ve ever come like that,” you breathed.
She stroked her fingertips over your collarbones in lazy patterns, and nuzzled your neck softly.
“Don’t get too comfortable there,” you grinned a moment later. “It’s your turn now…”
