Day five is upon us already! Here for your delectation and enjoyment (I hope!) is a cheeky and charming lil octomer boy and his reader. Thank you a million times over for your engagement and enthusiasm in this project so far - I'm not going to lie, it's a colossal undertaking to produce 12 stories for 12 days, but it's been utterly worth it so far it seems :).

I hope you enjoy this one!

At first when you saw the email, you deleted it, assuming it was spam. Only when you’d punched the trash can icon did you remember entering the competition to win a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of your local aquarium. Frantically scrabbling for your junk box, you restored the message and read it again.

“Congratulations, you’ve won an all access pass!” it beamed in large, blue print. You read on, going through the terms and conditions with a fine-tooth comb, and then you got in touch with the marketing department, stomach bubbling with excitement. You never won anything, so to win an experience of a lifetime like this was just incredible.

You’d never learned to swim, but that had never quelled your love of the sea and all its myriad wonders. As a child you’d wanted to be a shark mer, but you’d nearly drowned after an incident with a school bully in an early swimming lesson, and had never been able to get back in the water. The closest you got these days was going to the glass tunnel at the local aquarium every Saturday and sitting on the floor, looking up at the fish and sharks swimming above.

It didn’t hurt that there was a very cute octomer who worked there too, and who often cleaned the glass while you just happened to be watching. His lower body was a rich purple in colour, and his upper torso was lean and slender, blotched with patches of purple and lilac. He moved so gracefully in the water, you couldn’t help but stare. It wasn’t that you went almost every week with the hopes of seeing him, but you definitely did keep an eye out for him.

You turned up at the time you’d been told to, and reported to the front reception desk. The young man asked you to wait and fill in a couple of legal forms, and said that a keeper would be out to show you round shortly. The young woman who strode out to meet you a while later was possibly the most elegant and graceful creature you’d ever seen. She had mousy brown hair tied up in a scruffy bun, and she was curvy and sensual without being overly sexy, and something about her made you think of selkies. It wouldn’t have surprised you to find a selkie working there, but whatever her true nature was, she kept quiet about it.

“Hi!” she grinned, extending a hand as she approached. “I’m Louisa. Come on! Let’s get started!”

With a nervous smile, you followed her.

It was incredible. You fed and petted adorable stingrays, you got a tour of the whole facility, you learned about their conservation program, and as you got to the highlight of your tour - a visit to the shark tank - she asked if you’d like to go up to the observation platform above the tank.

“Of course!” you beamed, following her up the metal staircase which ran alongside the thick glass walls of the tank behind the public viewing area. At the top was a rather slick, concrete slope which drained down into the tank itself. Below, two hammerheads circled lazily, and you thought you glimpsed your favourite keeper actually in the tank with them.

“Who’s that?” you asked with innocent curiosity.

Louisa followed your gaze and laughed softly. “Oh, that’s Nereus.”

“Nereus?”

“He’s an octomer. He actually came to us as an emergency case a few years ago.”

“Wait, he’s not an exhibit, is he?”

She let out a bark of laughter, “No,” she said. “But I think sometimes he likes to think he is. We have an emergency medic on duty for any aquatic or marine life who may need us, and he was tangled up in some really nasty fishing wire when we found him on the beach. We brought him here for treatment, and instead of opting to go back to the ocean, he got a job here with us. The sharks love him for some reason.”

“I don’t blame them,” you chuckled.

The distortion of the water in the tank masked his thick, purplish black tentacles from clear view, but you knew what they looked like well enough. You’d pretended to be sketching away, lost in thought whenever he came near the glass windows of the tank, but you felt like you already knew every inch of him, if from the distance of a glass wall.

“You ready to move on?” she said. “We can grab a drink and a bite to eat before we head out.”

You sighed and turned to follow her, but as you moved, the sole of your shoe skidded on the wet concrete and you lost your balance. With your arms windmilling wildly, you toppled backwards, straight into the deep tank with a scream of terror.

With your eyes open, and only just resisting sucking in a horrible amount of chilly water, you sank and flailed, watching in blurred horror as a grey shape meandered curiously towards you. You screamed, a stream of bubbles blinding you, but in seconds, a purple and black body filled your vision. Tentacles spread wide, the webbing between them stretching intimidatingly at the approaching sharks, Nereus herded them away from you, and then you felt tentacles grab you by the legs and around your waist.

He bore you upwards and deposited you on the concrete where you spluttered and coughed and fought off waves of panic.

“Hey,” he asked, his voice a smooth baritone. “Hey, you’re alright…”

Louisa knelt at your other side in an instant, her face white with horror.

Still sputtering, you sat up, shivering, and glanced sideways at him. He was half hauled out, his nebulous body splaying out on the concrete beside you, thick and muscular but delicate looking somehow, and you could make out a network of paler, lilac scars amid the deep, rich purple of his eight tentacles. His torso was bare, as always, lean and muscular, the purple splotches of his lower half spreading up his abs and over his pecs like port wine birth marks. He was beautiful, even with his black hair plastered to his head and neck the way it was.

“Thank you,” you wheezed.

“You can’t swim?” he asked quietly, and you shook your head.

“Please don’t be angry with me,” you said, half turning to glance at Louisa. “I said I could on the form because I was afraid they wouldn’t let me in if I said I couldn’t…”

His smile was gentle and reassuring, and he winked at you. “It’s our secret. Most humans would’ve panicked on seeing a shark coming towards them anyway. I’m just glad I was here. You know…” he added, seeing the way you couldn’t stop staring at him. “I would offer to teach you to swim… if you like…?”

“In a shark tank?” you blurted, and he burst out laughing.

“No, in the ocean.”

“But… we’re five miles from the coast…” you said, feeling groggy, as though you were missing something.

His full lips twisted into an amused smile and he said, “I’m not a prisoner here, you know…? The sharkies can’t leave, but I can.”

“You can survive out of the water?” you asked.

He nodded and opened his arms. “Evidently,” he said. “Though admittedly not for very long.” He shifted his gaze to where Louisa was still kneeling, white as a sheet behind you, clearly running through the legal ramifications of your slip. “Lou-Lou has a pickup and lets me sit in a tank in the back. Sometimes she takes me to the beach. I’m sure she’d take me there, right?”

“Right,” she said flatly.

“Please,” you said. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t want to cause trouble.”

“You’re fine, I’m sure,” she said. “It’s me that could be in trouble…”

“I won’t tell if none of you will?” you said hopefully.

She sighed and nodded. “I’ll be in touch if anything comes up. We should go get you warm and dry though. I’ve got some spare clothes in my locker. Nereus, say goodbye to your new sweetheart for now, yeah?”

He took your hand in his cool fingers and brought your knuckles to his lips. “Take care, alright?” he said as you shivered, and not just from the cold. “I’ll see you soon.”

Dizzy, whether from shock or from the attentions of the handsome and very charming octomer, you followed Louisa and got a change of clothes from her. Mercifully you were about the same size, and her plain, baggy cargo trousers and spare aquarium shirt fitted just about alright.

You exchanged numbers, and by the next week you had arranged to meet her and Nereus by the beach. Not only were you terrified of being in the water, but you knew you’d have to be seen with significantly less on, but you pushed that aside as you waited on the warm, golden sand of the secluded cove. For now, you were covered with a pair of loose beach shorts and an old t-shirt.

A little while later, as the sun drifted high over head, you heard the growl of a truck, and saw it bouncing and lurching down the track through the sand dunes.

As it drew up beside you, you smiled at Louisa and then went round to the back where you saw a very bedraggled and honestly sick-looking octomer hanging half over the edge of a large, white tub.

“I hate cars,” he groaned as he saw you. “Hi.”

“Hi, are you alright?”

“Car sick,” he said. “Bleurgh. Ok, get me out of here.”

“How?”

He grinned and said, “Just let the tail of the truck down. I can kind of… slither out. It’s not pretty, but…” he shrugged. “What’s a poor octopus to do. Hey, Lou-Lou…” he whined after he’d seen how far he was from the gently rolling surf, “Any chance you can drive a bit closer?”

“You complained so much about being dumped in that tank, you deserve to be dropped at the top of the beach,” she hollered, leaning out of the window as he leaned over the bed of the truck to see her better. It gave you a very good vantage point of his muscular back and his glimmering tentacles as they slithered beneath the surface of his little temporary tub. When he pouted and did the most adorable puppy dog eyes you’d ever seen, his dark irises only making his eyes look even bigger, she made a disgusted noise. “Fine…”

“Yeah!” he giggled. “That’s my girl.” And he slapped the side of the truck like it was the flank of a horse as she drove the vehicle into the lapping waves at the sea’s edge.

You followed behind and unlatched the drop down flap at the back of the truck bed, and he pulled himself out of the tank with his impressive arms, raising his tentacles and half-stepping, half-slithering out of the tub. “Coming through!” he laughed as he gained momentum and swung himself down from the truck to the sandy surf with surprising elegance. His tentacles were obviously incredibly strong, as they braced his weight easily, and he was not small.

His human torso was about the size of a human male’s, perhaps a little smaller, while the mass of his octopus body spread out around him like a huge, writhing, purple skirt. “Ready?” he asked you, and you grinned.

“As I’ll ever be…”

“Dump your clothes in the truck bed,” he said. “Don’t want to be weighed down by all that wet fabric.”

When he saw you in just your swimming gear, his thus-far jovial manner cracked a little and a deep flush rose up his chest until he hid it by diving back into the waves, surfacing with a splash a little way out. “Come on,” he yelled over the rush of the water. “It’s shallow for a while. You can walk on those leggies of yours for a good while yet…”

You had to laugh. He was so positive. It was difficult to feel truly afraid, and as you got up to your waist, he swam back over to you, his tentacles pulsing easily to propel him through the water.

“Easy,” he smiled, pulling himself upright a bit on your hips. “How’d you feel?”

Your heartbeat hammered in your ears, but you nodded. “Scared but safe? If that’s possible?”

He smiled. “Dunk yourself down to your shoulders,” he said. “You can still stand here, but you need to get comfortable just being in the water. We’re not going to try swimming just yet.”

It took you a while, but eventually you were in up to your collarbones, clinging onto his strong hands for dear life.

“I’ve got you,” he laughed. “I can even get a hold of you with more of me, if that’d help?” To illustrate his point, he wrapped one tentacle slowly around your ankle, and you bit off a moan at the sensation. “Bit much, just yet, eh?” he chuckled. “Come on, let’s keep your mind on swimming to start with, shall we?”

After your first half an hour, you were exhausted. He had managed to get you floating on your stomach with your head up, his tentacles wrapped around your waist to help you keep your chin above the water. The feeling of being able to sink down to the depths and never rise up again still choked the air out of your lungs every few strokes though. Nereus, however, was patient and sweet, and once you’d done a few yards of fairly decent doggy paddle, he grinned and swept you up into the shallows where you could sit and recover while the water lapped around your thighs but no further.

“You did so well!” he beamed. “I’m so proud of you!”

“Helps to have a nice teacher,” you said. “Makes it much less scary.”

He smiled. “I’m glad. And… I hope I didn’t seem too forward… I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable. I just think… you know…” he scratched the back of his head, suddenly nervous, and huffed an anxious little laugh. “You’re cute. I mean, I’ve seen you at the aquarium a lot. I don’t know if you’ve noticed me, but I like to watch you drawing. It’s so peaceful…”

“You’ve noticed me?” you gasped. “I… and yeah, of course I’ve noticed you. I mean… not in a creepy way, but… You’re so graceful in the water, you know? And so… fluid… you’re like liquid…”

The slow smile that dawned on his handsome, mottled face set a storm of butterflies shimmering in your chest, and you were almost afraid to open your mouth in case they all came fluttering out.

Before he could reply, Louisa came over. “You two done for the day?” she asked, and Nereus jumped a mile.

A dark cloud of ink puffed out into the water around him and he swore. “Shit,” he laughed, his face flushing a dark red. “Lou, you scared the fucking life out of me!”

“Sorry,” she said, looking from one to the other of you and not sounding in the least bit contrite. “It’s not like I tried to sneak up on you or anything… You were just so entranced by your pupil I guess…”

He cleared his throat and tried to fan away the spurt of ink. “So… uh… you… you want another lesson sometime?” he asked awkwardly, his cheeks still burning.

You nodded. “Definitely. If Louisa doesn’t mind driving you, that is. I would offer, but I don’t think your tank would fit in my little car…”

“I don’t have to be in the tank,” he said. “A plastic sheet and a damp towel will work for short distances… So long as I don’t completely dry out, it’s fine…”

“I could pick you up from the aquarium then?” you asked, eager not to have Louisa as a third wheel, no matter how nice she seemed.

It was all arranged, and a week later you arrived with a plastic tarp and three sopping wet bath towels. Nereus slithered out from the back door of the aquarium, near to where you’d parked up, and you watched as he hauled himself over the tarmac towards you. He opened the door and saw the towels, grinned, picked two of them up and sat on the third, while draping the others over his mass of tentacles with a sigh of relief. It was a bit of a squeeze with him in the front, and he definitely got a bit of the upholstery and interior wet, but when you saw him stuffed into the passenger seat of your car, ready and keen to go, you had to laugh.

“What?” he grinned. “Something funny about a fish out of water?” He was wearing a big, baggy black hoodie over his human half that day, and it suited him.

“You’re not a fish, silly,” you said.

“True. How are you anyway? You look good today. I like your glasses.”

“Thank you, and I’m good. Ready to go?”

He nodded, and you drove away, the two of you chatting almost incessantly until you got to the beach. He still got car sick, but it was better without sloshing around in a tank, and when he flopped unsteadily out of the car onto the concrete of the boat launch ramp, he took only a few moments of deep breathing before he had regained his composure. He left the towels on the tarp and closed the door, using his muscular tentacles to crawl awkwardly towards the water. With your car not being a four-wheel drive, you dropped him off and then went to park it further up the beach so it wouldn’t get stuck in the soft sand.

It was a bit of a walk for you back to the water, and by the time you got there, there was no sign of him.

You stripped down to your swimwear again and nervously stepped into the water. The weather was cloudier that day than your first lesson, and the breeze was stiff. You couldn’t imagine being particularly comfortable for this session, but you were willing to try.

Nereus appeared above the waves a little way out, and when he saw you, he paused, gazing at you with a look on his face as though you were a deity emerging from the waves or something. It made you flush hot with embarrassment, and he grinned again, swimming casually over, spiralling lazily in the water. His tentacles found your calves first, and he latched onto you, drawing himself closer to you than he had the first time. There was something nice and reassuring about it, despite the unusual texture to him.

“Hey,” he murmured. “You feeling ok?”

“I am now,” you smiled, reaching bravely for his cheek and pressing your palm into it.

“You’re gorgeous,” he blurted in a hoarse whisper. “Gods, I can’t breathe when I see you.”

That took you by surprise, and he blushed.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.” His tentacles unravelled from you, the large suckers releasing you instantly, and you swayed.

“You didn’t,” you said quickly. “I like you. I’ve admired you for ages, Nereus. Like I said last time… I think you’re very beautiful.”

He surged back towards you, his tentacles crawling up your skin, sucking hard enough at you to dapple you with little suction bruises. The impact of his rush carried you staggering back up the beach, and you toppled into the shallow surf with his full weight atop you. “I want you,” he rasped. “I’ve wanted you ever since I first saw you sitting there drawing. Can I? May I?” he whispered, and you felt one of his eight, sensitive, dexterous limbs sneaking up the inside of your legs.

You nodded, and he smiled. The water around you began to cloud with dark ink as he lost himself in pleasuring you, and as you drew closer and closer to your own peak with his cool body pressed against yours, he too began to shudder and gasp, his skin even changing colour from its usual dark purple to an intense, cobalt blue, and then a vibrant pink.

“I… I want you,” he gasped, and you felt something pressing against where you were most sensitive. The moment his cock touched you, he gave a plaintive cry and lowered his forehead to your collarbone, rutting his body up against you in desperate, frantic motions, pulling his body closer to yours with his strong arms. “I’m…”

“Come for me,” you said, and he did.

He emptied himself all over you in shuddering, twitching gasps, covering you in his release. The waves washed in and took some of it away, but he lay there, limp and spent, gulping for air with the intensity of his release.

“Beautiful,” you whispered, kissing his wet, black hair and making him shudder and shift colours again.

“I need… a moment,” he rasped, breath ragged as he rolled half off you with the subtle strength of the waves.

“Take as long as you need,” you said. “I’m surprisingly comfortable.”

With a grin, he pressed a kiss to your neck and then flopped back down, exhausted, laying his head on your chest.

“You know,” you said a while later. “Swimming lessons won’t be so bad if I get a reward like that at the end.”

“You didn’t even do anything this time,” he complained cheekily. “You’ll have to work that one off.”

“Fair enough,” you said.

“Next time I’ll make sure you earn it though…”

You ran your fingers through his tousled, wet hair. “Next time?” you said. “I like the sound of that.”
