CW: mention of injury to reader and to a lil rabbit
“Oh no; it’s ok little guy,” you crooned, holding back the sobs of pain as your own back screamed at you from the scores where the gnoll’s claws had raked down your back.
You rocked back and forth, cradling the limp rabbit in your arms, its back leg flopping strangely.
A crackling in the undergrowth made you look up, suddenly terrified that the gnoll - who had left so suddenly after snuffing the air - had returned.
When a figure stepped out of the bracken and held clawed hands up with an awkward smile on a reptilian face, you swallowed thickly and whimpered, “Help me?”
Your face scrunched up with pain and exhaustion, and the creature stood there for only a moment before clearly making a decision and striding over to you on long, lean, muscular legs.
“Easy,” he said in a gravelly, harsh voice. “What happened to you?”
“Gnoll. She heard you coming, I think, or smelled you. Please don’t hurt me…”
“What have you got there?” he asked, jutting his sharp chin out in the direction of the creature in your arms. He had beautiful spines that ran over his scaly forehead and the crown of his head before going down his entire spine to the tip of his thick tail which trailed in the leaf litter behind him.
“Rabbit,” you said rather pathetically. “I found it right before the gnoll got me.”
“You’re hurt,” he stated, eyeing your back with his marbled green and gold eyes.
“Yeah,” you croaked, dissolving into sobs. “Please…”
“Alright, alright,” he said, sounding reluctant and yet sympathetic. “Can you stand?”
You nodded, and he straightened from where he’d crouched beside you, holding out a taloned, leathery hand to help you to your feet.
You took it, scooping the rabbit up, and let the lizardman guide you through the forest towards a cave beside a tranquil pond.
“You live here?” you asked, and he merely nodded, about to duck under the hanging curtain of ivy and grasses which masked the entrance. “Thank you,” you added.
He paused and sighed. “You’re welcome. Look… It’s… It’s been a while, ok?”
“What do you mean?”
“Since I’ve… been around anyone…”
You managed a snorting laugh before you broke off with a grimace and staggered slightly.
“Come on in and let me get you patched up,” he growled, tail lashing back and forth.
“And the rabbit?” you asked, glancing at the quivering creature in your arms.
“Yeah, him too,” he said before ducking into the cave entrance and vanishing into the dark.
