Even you had to admit that the large black dog that you often saw down by the lake was a little… creepy; a lean body, black, lank fur, and eyes so sad they drew your gaze and held it, even at a distance.

You crouched on the pebble shore of the gently whispering lake late one afternoon when you happened to spot him, and he regarded you with something akin to surprise in his startlingly intelligent eyes. 

Trotting curiously over to you on long, rangy legs, he stared into your eyes in a way that no ordinary dog would ever dare; smoke curled lazily around his paws, and as it furled upwards like the breath of a slumbering dragon, the dog’s form began to shift and change before your eyes. 

Rising up onto its hind legs, almost as if it had been about to beg, the dog’s body changed, swirling fog sweeping in a coiling column around him until before you stood a startlingly handsome young man with eyes as deep and old as time itself. As he straightened to stand a head taller than you, wearing elegant dark clothes that fitted his slender body perfectly, his pale lips curled at the corners and he said in a rough, tenor voice, “You’ve been kind to me - how may I repay you?”
