“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that,” came the slightly electronic voice of the phone’s AI. 

Your relatively new friend dropped your phone in horror and leapt back as though it were made entirely of cold-wrought iron. “It’s trying to hex me.”

“No, she’s not,” you chuckled fondly, picking it up from where it had mercifully landed on the sofa and not on the hard floor. “You just pressed the home button too long.”

“The home button? It takes you home? It’s a portal as well? What is this witchcraft?!”

“No, no, you sweet clueless Fae,” you laughed. 

“Hey,” they prickled. “I am the second child of the Court of Fire I’ll have you know! I’m a prince!” 

“You’re also completely bloody clueless when it comes to human technology. It’s not a portal, it’s a button. It takes you back to the main screen.”

“Oh.”

They flopped down onto the sofa and ran a hand through their long, red-gold hair. “I don’t think I’ll ever understand it.”

You joined them and they put an arm affectionately around your shoulders, drawing you in to the warmth of their lithe, lean body. 

“The same way I’ll never understand Fae magic properly.”

“True,” they murmured. “Thank you for trying to teach me though. So… uh… what’s an ‘emoji’?”

You looked up at them and held your phone at arm’s length. “Smile!”

You’ve still got that selfie pinned up on your mirror, even though they’ve long returned to the Fae Realm now.
