Prompt: "can we get a spoiled birthday surprise with a yeti? maybe the reader has everything planned out but nothing turns out right"

___

Tears filled your eyes as you stood in the middle of a smoke filled kitchen, the windows opened wide, the smoke alarm still occasionally ‘pipping’ at you despite your having turned it off. Twice.

Everything was ruined.

You ground your jaw and covered your face with your hands. The birthday cake was little more than cinders, and now you had nothing on which to put all the fancy frosting and decorations you’d bought, and you’d even made a sugar ‘frozen pond’ to go in the middle of it. And now all you had were the charred remains stuck irrevocably to the inside of the cake tins, and a kitchen full of smoke for your efforts.

And then to make matters worse, it seemed like your partner was home early.

The keys rattled in the door and the moment their sensitive nose caught the thick, acrid smoke in the air, you heard pounding footsteps on the floor, and they burst into the kitchen in a rush of bristling white fur and concern. They barked your name when they saw you standing there in the middle of the chaos you’d created, and their ice blue eyes went wide.

“You alright?” they asked, closing the door behind them to keep the smoke somewhat contained. “What happened? It looks like a bomb went off in here…”

“I…” you said, but you didn’t get any further before those tears finally spilled over.

Closing the gap between you with two enormous strides, they enveloped you in a massive hug and drew you close to their warm body. One paw-like hand closed around the back of your head and they stroked your hair. “Hey,” they purred. “Hey, it’s ok.”

“It’s not ok,” you mumbled, the words muffled by the fur on their torso, your face mushed up against their body. “I wanted to surprise you on your birthday, but… everything’s ruined.”

“My birthday?” they asked quietly. “But… It’s not my birthday til tomorrow…”

“I know,” you said. “I wanted to have the cake made in advance so I could spend tomorrow with you, but… it’s… I…”

They drew back and crouched down on one knee to be level with your face, cupping your jaw in their enormous palms. “We can get ice cream or something,” they said, stroking your cheeks with their thumbs. “I know it’s not the same, and I know it’s not what you wanted, but if I’m with you then I’m happy. Alright?”

Nodding reluctantly, you sighed and snuffled.

With a grin, they pulled you back into their arms.

After a moment, you said, “I’m snotting on your fur.”

“Gross…” they laughed, but they didn’t move away.
