For the prompt - “You’re seriously like a man-child.”

___

It was the night before the full moon, and, naturally, he was a mess.

“It’s my lazy day,” he whined, already fully shifted, with fluffy, triangular ears and a tail and big old claws that he raked over the sheets in a way that made your heart stop.

“If you rip those again, I’m making you go out and replace them right now!” you warned, pointing a finger at him. “Imminent full moon or not.”

In response, you got a long, low growl that was mostly just whine from somewhere under the covers.

“You’re seriously like a man-child,” you huffed.

“It’s lazy day,” he repeated. “It’s a full moon tomorrow. I need to conserve my strength.”

“Oh, next you’ll be saying you want pizza delivered personally to the bedroom, with a side of cookie dough ice cream…”

He perked up visibly at that, and you laughed. It wasn’t that you were unsympathetic - shifting like this took its toll on him for sure - but goodness did he know how to luxuriate in his own misery beforehand. The waxing of the moon seemed to make him nothing but moody and grouchy, and even though you’d been together for years, it never seemed to ease up.

Softening slightly, you chuckled and turned to leave the bedroom. “If you manage to heave your fluffy arse downstairs,” you said, pausing in the doorway and looking back at him, “I’ll order a meat feast pizza and a whole tub of ice cream. And I’ll scratch your belly while we watch Neftlix. But only if you come downstairs.”

He looked away, clearly debating with himself whether remaining in bed to marinate in his own pre-full-moon funk or taking you up on your offer would make him feel better. Reluctant as a recalcitrant toddler, he pinned his ears back and whined at you, nose twitching. Finally he shuffled out of bed, leaving the covers in a wrinkled pile, and followed you downstairs. He immediately curled up in a miserable ball on the end of the sofa while you ordered the food, only unravelling after you’d sat down and scratched your fingers invitingly on the sofa cushions between you a little to encourage him to uncurl.

“C’mon, you big softy,” you smiled as he nosed his way into your lap like an overgrown dog and not the supernatural killer he could have been. As your fingers worked through his thick, shaggy coat, he began to relax tangibly. The anxiety and tension of the full moon dissipating a little under the attention of your hands in his fur, he let his head fall heavy in your lap, and even began to wag softly. “I love you,” you whispered before bending over and laying a kiss atop his head.

He raised his head and nosed his muzzle against your cheek, licking and lapping softly, affectionately. “Love you too,” he said. “Thanks for taking care of me.”

“Always,” you smiled, petting his ear just so and teaming it with a well-placed belly scratch.

His hind leg thudded repeatedly against the end of the sofa and he melted a fraction more.

This is all great, but the waggling leg at the end is a particularly perfect touch!
