Little bit of housekeeping: euros vs dollars (Patreon)

This is a post I wasn't hoping to make but I kinda figured it was unavoidable, and indeed here we are. I basically wanna know what you guys think about this in order to help me make a decision.

The central question:

Are you terribly attached to what kind of currency I run my Patreon page in?

I've always run it in USD because I figured that's just what's easiest. It's an international standard and everyone roughly understands the value of a dollar relative to even their own currency if they use a different one.

But the reality is that the Euro vs Dollar exchange rate is getting pretty bad. I don't wanna get into the politics of it because there's nothing we could say about it here that would make the slightest bit of difference or have the slightest bit of influence. And I've always kept politics off this page anyway. The current exchange rate is 84 eurocents for a dollar. I've always lived with a reality of it being 90-95 cents and that was just fine, and usually with the election of a new president there'd even be a little bit of a boom which was good for me.

Currently there is no boom. And I can't get around the fact that even though I earn my income in dollars, I spend it in euros. Losing 15% of my earnings, or more (I have a feeling it's gonna be below 80 cents relatively soon) to the exchange rate is quite frankly a massive blow.

I'm not swapping just yet. But if it falls below 80 cents I'm not sure I have a choice. Does it matter to you guys what currency it is? Would anyone unsub just because I switched from one to the other? I imagine the new price point would be the main point of contention, but right now I'm not even sure if the actual price point would change because you can't change prices on a tier with active subscribers in it.

There's a lot of unknowns at this point but I just wanted to know how you guys felt about it on a user experience level.

Is simply increasing prices by 20% a viable option if you want to stay with usd? I personally don't care.

USD is cheaper in my currency vs the EUR.

You know I'm US-based and I think my bank would charge a very small fee if you used Euros instead of dollars (and I'm sure the same has been true for those that pay in Euros to convert to dollars) - but honestly, it's not anywhere close to a significant enough amount to make me want to unsub. Long winded way of saying "it don't matter to me". -Sam

I'm not bothered if its in US Dollars or Euros as long as still get the outstanding work and its not used to hike the prices significantly.

That's just the issue. The dollar is a cheaper currency than the euro so it's a better deal for almost anyone that I run this patreon in dollars. My job is to find a balance between keeping it affordable and being able to earn a living haha.

I mean, if you have to use EUR then that is what you need to do in order to be able to pay your bills and whatnot.

While I enjoy paying less, I understand this being a concern for you since it's your livelihood. So yeah feel free to switch as the USD is pretty much going down, and it will keep doing that as long as Trump is allowed to run amok in the US. And it will be at least until the midterms in late 2026 when he may get some actual pushback from anyone. When you switch I hope you adapt the prices fairly, not just having the 15 dollars tier become 15 euros.

The dollar to euro is currently $1.18 dollars to one euro Personally I’d prefer to stick with the dollar since I’m pretty certain I’d get stuck with some surcharge to pay in euros I totally understand your concern over the current state of things I’m a long time patron and frankly don’t mind if you were to have to restructure the current price of tiers As the economy changes so does the price of goods As it stands Patreon already charges sales tax on top of the price A price hike of 20% would not be a surprise if it were to happen in the near future Good look sorting out this issue Keep up your amazing work

I'm originally paying in EUR anyway, so changing would be fine with me. A price hike, not so much.

Honestly, no preference for currency. I would also totally support you increasing prices due to economic conditions. That's always a fair reason. Everybody has to pay the bills!

Dangerous Lines

You charge what you need to in the currency you need to. Allowing Patreon to make the conversion is a benefit to me. Pricing in USD makes my budgeting easier, but this isn’t the only place where that’s true.

to be honest because i use € to pay. i wont complain over the current excange market. BUT. please use the curency who fits you the best. as long as you dont ramp up your monthly payments to bmuch .(like double it) i myself and a lot of your other fans will support you.

I’m just so amazed you can make a living at this! Charge what you need to to live in which ever currency.

The conversion rate from AU$ currency to $US is bad enough. Converting to Euro is worse, and makes the cost of subscribing significantly more expensive.
