What a day for revelations! Alice makes an unpleasant discovery about her waistline when she finally returns to the maternity store to find clothes big enough to accomodate her most recent balloonage, while Jen suddenly makes a shocking discovery about Laurie's background. Could it be that Laurie isn't as perfect as she's always claimed?

Alice eating her way through the entire food court is a beautiful image, especially with the poor thing huffing and puffing without her scooter. I'm glad someone finally realized Alice needs to be full whenever they measure her. Brings us one step closer to someone actively stuffing her to so her clothes will fit for another week or two. Though, admittedly, 72 inches seems a bit small, considering Jen and Laurie measured near and over 100 when they were still in the 450-500 range. Regardless, well done! This is my favorite story of the last few.

What a great twist with Laurie. We've talked about and explored this idea that she was "destined to be fat," but I never considered how that might shape her past. The fact that she used to be chunky shines her in a new light. It's her origin story. What's interesting now is thinking about how she treated Jen versus Alice. Laurie thought she needed to lose weight to become a cheerleader, whereas Alice gained weight as a cheerleader but stuck with it. I wonder if Alice's confidence and unwillingness to back down from being both overweight and a cheerleader was why Laurie was so awful towards her, because she possessed what Laurie thought she could never do: be those two things at once. Then she began her plan to fatten Alice because subconsciously she knew the floodgates of her appetite had opened and she was going to keep getting fatter no what. My question is this: did Laurie repress her past about being a fat glutton, put a mental block over those memories, or has it been something on her mind? I'm assuming this origin wasn't initially planned when the story began, so it seems like Laurie blocked out all this out until she convinced herself that she was never overweight at all, like she rewrote her own history in her head to be more palatable as a way to cope. Regardless, it reinforces one of my favorite things about Lautie, which is that since she was always destined to be fat, her few years being skinny were anomaly. She started fat, was skinny for a couple years, then became fat again. She'll have lived the vast majority of her life overweight, with just a brief stint of time when she was skinny. Her time as a thin cheerleader will just be a fleeting moment that most people will forget. When you see her now, people wonder how she could have ever once been thin, and eventually, they'll forget she was ever skinny at all.

Some real lovely images throughout this chapter. Alice on auto-pilot eating out the food court while privately fretting and experiencing the dangers of obesity? Sheila's attempt to reassure Alice while increasingly doubtful anything could fit her? And of course that revelation about Laurie's past as a Chunker in hiding? All great.
