This week was a lot of getting into the swing of things. After the stream we started proper with the development of this little game. We released the short announcement video on youtube and started organizing stuff. We're figuring out the rhythm of how this will work. If you have tips or thoughts, tell us about it !

Seb:

Last week I had a ton of work at my job, so I couldn’t work as much on the game as I wanted. But I toyed around with shaders, made a mockup world to try stuff out in.

I tried out an outline shader and found a depth shader that gives a painterly look to the distant terrain.

Here’s what I have so far. I quite like the look, even though it’ll require some tuning.

I tried different things for the water shader, following various tutorials and trying out stuff from godotshaders.com.

this one is quite nice, but a liiiittle too cartoony

same for this one, a little too cloudy.

I love this one, but it doesn't really fit the vibe of the game. I'll reuse it for something else for sure.

this is the one we're going for at the moment. it'll get tuned over the coming weeks, but the deciding factor were the reflections.

then I followed a neat tutorial to create the first version of the campfire (tutorial here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3xMwfrlTI8)

I also created this horrible looking waterfall. This one needs work. We’ll see later once the terrain is further along.

This week I plan on continuing on various tech bits & particle systems (fireflies? leaves? wind trails?). I need to figure out how to forbid you from walking into the water (swimming is out of scope for this game). I’m still working full time right now, so time is short, but I'll make it work!

Myu:

HOW HAS IT BEEN A WEEK ALREADY???Jokes aside, I had a speedrun marathon to help host last weekend so I’m running on very little sleep, forgive the probably high amount of capslocks in this post.

We had a Very Serious Meeting last thursday to prototype the map of the game. With Legos. Serious stuff.Look at it. It has a little lego guy in a canoe (!!!)

Then I took our lego prototype and redrew it with more details(drawn by mouse, knowing I had just borrowed a graphic tablet from Seb I don’t know why I did that, it just seemed simpler at the time…)

Then came the time to try to translate this into the terrain editor we decided to use, a nifty plugin called heightmap terrain by Zylann.AND THIS WAS MORE DIFFICULT THAN I THOUGHT, WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED(anyone who’s ever attempted to terraform any game map, that’s who)

But we now have a rather okay base I think. I will definitely keep working at it but many things will be added as separate 3D models to dress it up so I think I shouldn’t spend too much time on it anymore… I say as I re-open Godot because I just thought of something………

I do not have the excuse of having a full time job on the side, so if you wonder “where has the rest of your week gone?” the answer is: watching actual full lessons on Blender via https://cgcookie.com/, so I don’t jump into tutorials without understanding what I do. I keep getting distracted, it’s terrible. I had forgotten how tough being a student can be. Hopefully by next week we’ll have at least one (1) tree, if my brain doesn’t melt from the amount of info I am ingesting on shortcuts and collections and beveling and…

Thanks a lot for reading! See you live on wednesday on twitch, and next thursday for the next update!
