WEEKLY UPDATE! - Where were we? (Patreon)
Content
Hi! Myu here, it's been a minute since I wrote for the weeklys o/But Seb is now starting his internship, so get ready to read me way more in the coming weeks...So, now that our shaders are working... Where are we on this cross stitch RPG?Well, I'm glad you asked.Because it's time to chat about... FANTASY GEOGRAPHY!
First, a quick reminder about our world structure! Most of the game will take place in the tapestry word, Tapijt ("Tap-eye-ght"), which is the stitched world. Then there is the back of the tapestry, the confusing and dangerous Anderekant. And all around that is the Buiten, the "real world" watching and maybe invading the tapestry...Easy, right?
Let's zoom in on Tapijt!
Its borders are the Sierrand, the decorated frieze framing the tapestry. This is a dangerous and strange land, stroll there at your own risks!Inside this frame, the land is divided in three big regions. These are more or less countries, with different geography, government systems and a different way of managing and seeing the Heroes... (more on that later)
First (in order of discovery in the game) is...
Kruissteek!
A monarchy, with a ruling class of nobles. The geography is west european, coastal. The architecture is a mix of medieval Brittany and the Netherlands.
Sounds dreamy, but it's a corrupt kingdom, diverting its own research against the Buiten for more military power... Within the beautiful city walls of the main cities, you can expect court schemes, power struggles, and disdain for their very own people. The very first place you visit is one of these cities, by the way. And it's there you'll find the world renowned Hero Academy... More on that later!West to Kruissteek is another land though...
Naaigaren!
Naaigaren is ruled by the Consortium, a counsel of the richest and most powerful merchants. It is mostly a desert, arid, with volcanos in the south. Its architecture is inspired by the Mongol steppes and Cesar Manrique's work in Lanzarote.
This is the land of travelling merchants, caravans, with few cities where the wealthy rule.
Fun fact: we first named it Naaien, which means "sewing" in Dutch, but it also has a history ofdouble-entedre for fu... ANYWAY, naming things is hard!It is also the land where the Naald, the arts of the healing magic, and most magic arts were first invented. The masters all go study there, as the best ones remain in Naaigaren.
It is a difficult land, but not as harsh as...
Borduur!
The land of the Allied Clans, a fractured system of neighboring settlements agreeing to form a cohesive structure to protect themselves better. It is a harsh mountain land, cold and unforgiving. Its architecture is very troglodyte Art Deco, think of the usual LOTR type fantasy dwarven style of partially hidden cliff cities.
Borduur is difficult to journey through, Clans are isolated from each otehrs and wary of strangers. It is also the place most affected by the tapestry's decay and the Buiten...
But more on that later, I hope this has sparked some curiosity for your future touristic endeavors in Tapijt ;)See you all next week for more lore (probably)!
