25 cent phone calls, phone booths, all the old cars everyone drives. When does this series take place?

nikkistevenreact

all that and Mark seems to have a pretty modern cell phone - very confusing

Bob Bagstone

Exactly. The office equipment is hardly state of the art

My take on it is it’s an “alternate timeline” where technology advanced differently. Lumon was founded in 1866(?), so I think of the show as taking place sometime around now (2000s) but society evolved differently due to the technological differences. So some sectors are much more advanced while others have stagnated.

Sounds plausible. It took effort to find automobiles that are in excellent condition and several decades old, just to have as background set dressing that few people other than myself would notice. Irving’s cool 4 door Nova that he drove is almost 50 years old.

Sarah Bock (Miss Huang) is actually turning 19 next month. But she does look younger.

I read that the show wanted to make the timeline as ambiguous as possible so they combined old and new to keep us guessing. Not sure if it’s true but wouldn’t surprise me.

If that were the case it worked!

And also where? Kier, PE is the town and state where they are, seen in season 1 finale when innie Irv looks at his mail. PE is not an abbreviation of any US state.

Does anyone know the melody that the guy was whistling in the cold open? I can swear I’ve heard it before but can’t remember where.

By the way, Nikki and Steve, the new way you go full screen when you are starting the episode is VERY helpful for synchronizing the show! Thank you!!

Funny (kinda) as a black person, the performance review and asking about the painting scenes feel all too familiar. Despite the work he is doing being decent, he is getting nitpicked and given a basic level of recognition, if any at all. And talking to someone who likely has similar experiences, despite her being more white passing leads to a feeling that perhaps he is not alone in how he feels.

The song is "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" sung by Gordon Lightfoot in the 70's. It was a huge hit about a shipwreck in the Great Lakes.

I love the cinematography in this episode. The scene in the bathroom with Mark between Helly/Helena in the mirror reflection is fire!!

Bill B.

Thank you so much! O idea where I heard it but I know why it stuck with me. The history behind the song is incredible. This one couldn’t have been chosen as a random afterthought.

In the episode where he was “honored” with the paintings…. The actress who plays Natalie says SO MUCH with just her face acting.
