This week, The Resties hop into their itty bitty spacecraft and shoot bad robots in Minishoot' Adventures. The blend of twin-stick shooter and Zelda-like adventure makes for the best PlayStation Vita game never released on the PlayStation Vita.

In the back half, Frushtick tells Plante about an impressively crafted and extremely NSFW 2D action game. Warning: click this link with caution and only if you are over 18!

Question for the comments

What's the most embarrassing game you've ever played?

Monty

By the rules of games Scarlet Maden is invincible with that armor

Sweet Wizzle

It's really funny hearing these two pure boys get into these games and have their algorithms ruined permanently. For reasons, I can corroborate that the game is actually good. I'd wager Pull Stay is the shut-in game Plante mentions and forgets to bring up again. It's on my wishlist and seems really fun! Edit: Russ, that drawing is fantastic.

Elklodge

As far as most embarrassing game I’ve played, hard to choose. Probably any one of the hundreds of obscene, edgelord flash games that were on pre-youtube sites like Newgrounds or Addictinggames. Struggling to think of one, there were so many. Now it’s just a burning memory

Geoff N

What an odd timing on the episode. RIP Roger Corman, cinema today would not be what it is without you.

Zardoz

idk, personally those two worlds don't mix. I'd rather just spank my goblin and then play Rogue Legacy 2.

Directional Joy

3D Dot Game Heroes and Dragon Quest Builders comes to mind, as good examples of games that piggybacked off of another game’s formula but incorporated its own unique interpretation.

Andrew Birmingham

The fact that steam says Scarlet Maiden features family sharing broke my brain.

Ellen Shank

I played the hell out of Max Gentleman Sexy Business and loved every second

Angryblue_Dotcom

I picked up Scarlet Maiden from the mantion last week and ... it's weirdly fun.

Kat

Re: the building temp switch over? I live in Toronto Canada, and we still fucking do that as well. Gotta turn off the heater before you can turn on the chiller for some fuckin reason.

Angryblue_Dotcom

Oh yeah, I keep wanting to mention the game: pools. It's a whole liminal spaces weirdo thing that made me actually buy a 50ft HDMI cable to do PC gaming on my couch.

Kat

New series idea: Besties After Dark?

Jeff Good

Intersection of adult scifi with actors before they were greats: Lifeforce (1985) actually isn't half bad. The special effects are pretty good for their time, Dan O'Bannon has a screenplay credit and Patrick Stewart plays a side character.

Will Maciejewski

Hey Besties, do you have a link to that talk about bullet hells and the meditative state of it all. It sounds really cool

ThanaThots

“I would describe it as somebody eating an entire birthday cake with their hands.” My…. My mind doesn’t even know where to take that imagery….

Joe Moore

Everybody does love P.O.D. they have a new album that came out this week and it absolutely slaps

Rachel

If we're diving into adult games, I have to rec Abaddon: Princess of the Decay. It's a horror game done in part as an homage to the Famicom horror game Sweet Home (never released in the US, but there's a fan tl.) Highly recommend, it is top notch horror. It's not on steam, but gog and itch have it. I also recommend playing with the erotic scenes in their original pixel format rather than the revamped illustrations. Imo, a double playthrough of both Abaddon and Sweet Home would be exactly the kind of thing Resties especially is into it.

NerdSync

The spinoff show would be called The Testes

Cam

the "okay so I know, but hear me out, it's kinda good" game for me is the Succubus series (not the first person shooter one, that's unrelated). Each game is a clone of a different classic formula, Castlevania, Mega Man, Zelda. But y'know, with boobs. But the games themselves are really well made and the pixel art is good!

CJ Anderson

I was expecting much worse from Minishoot visually. I suppose it didn't steal my attention, but I appreciate the bright colors and clarity

Jon Marcopoulos

You know, an interview with an adult games publisher/developer sounds like a perfect fit for the behind-the-paywall show

Nat J

The game I’m most embarrassed to have played is COD

Sierra Powers

Thank you Chris for pointing out how funny it is that Russ was shy about the romance episode but ready to talk about Scarlet Maiden! I was laughing and thinking the same thing. No judgement! It's just funny how comfort levels around such subjects can vary. Looking at the Steam page, I was really relieved to see how positive all the "action" was. It made me think that maybe it is trying to appeal to the giggly part of the brain. If the gameplay is approachable and familiar, the art great, and the mood joyful, maybe it IS just trying to let you have a fun, giggly time that feels a bit "forbidden".

"The fact that so few games have extremely explicit sex is a little bit weird given how much of an impact it has on our society." I am delighted that this genre has come up, because I am fascinated by adult games, so get ready for an essay. I relate to Chris' catholic upbringing (southern bible belt protestant for me) and I've spent the last decade trying to free myself from the shackles of guilt and shame such an upbringing tends to hardwire into you. Aside from seeking sex positivity, as a queer person, I'm also always seeking representation. There are still folks that seem to think the mere existence of a queer person is something obscene, which means that sometimes pornography is a person's first introduction to queer people. But there's something special about this particular medium of Adult Content: the fact they are video games. It's different from the three minute plot of your typical porno, establishing that the housewife is home alone when the delivery guy rings the doorbell. There's interaction in video games which demands a certain level of quality not necessary for a passive experience like a movie. Let me give some specific examples. The lewd game I've spent the most time playing is Seeds of Chaos. Sure, there's goblin tiddies, but there's also political intrigue, and D&D elements such as stats, perception checks, dice rolls, and a map to explore. I've played 46 hours so far and there's still a lot I haven't seen. Granted, in the time I've owned the game, they've done several major updates, at least one requiring a fresh save file, but I would mark that as a positive. It's neat how much they keep adding and updating. There's definitely moments of cringe in the writing, but I appreciate what the game is doing as a whole. Next example, Cloud Meadow. I've seen it described as "horny Stardew Valley" and "Sun Haven on Viagra." I've only got 4 hours in this one, but I'm fascinated by the farming and combat mechanics. My main complaint with this one is a common complaint I have for games: the gender options are binary boring. I'm a transman and seeing a character with a body like mine is extremely rare in games, porn or not. Another thing about Adult Games that I find fun: the fact Steam tells you if one of your friends has a game wishlisted. If you are bold enough to publicly wishlist Lust From Beyond, then yeah I'll gift it to you!! Try sending your pals porn games they want and think no one will notice. It's hilarious. I gifted Treasures of Nadia to one friend who gifted me back Gachi: Space Orgasm, a third-person shooter. I'll have to give Gachi: Space Orgasm another try with a controller, when I played it mouse & keyboard, I died before I could even get to any Space Foreplay... Anyway, I'll for sure be checking out Scarlet Maiden, so thank you Bennett Foddy. I would love more discussion on Adult Games! I think it's something to do with how you can learn a lot about a society based on what it finds taboo. I'd love to hear more on why there isn't more sex in main stream games, in comparison to how common a sex scene is in cinema. I've been a long time fan of The Besties and I've long meant to comment and thank you for the dozens of games I've snagged on y'all's recommendation, but here I am, only finally commenting after the horny game discussion. Last note, Carnal Instinct is in early access, and I haven't played it, it's on my wishlist, but if anyone has played it, I'd love a review! (and can anyone tell me if the character creator will let me be a boy with a pussy, thank you) I've also heard Midnight Castle Succubus DX is good, but I haven't played it myself. (Thank you for your time, anyone who read all this)

Michael B.

This is the best episode. - Russ making Chris Plante react live to this game, and insisting on logging in for the full effect of the trailer. - All of the perfect puns while avoiding sex descriptions. - Picturing Bennet Foddy saying “wtf Frushtick, I told you that in confidence” when he starts getting messages about his taste. I’m gonna check this game out lol.

Ricker Bailey

I can’t wait for the porn-game-only spin-off show: “Chesties”.

JB

How on Earth did Plante equating porn games on porn games end up making total and complete sense. What an analogy.

CPT_Turboshaft

Seems like such a bizarre choice to talk about Hades 2 when you knew Justin (who seemed by far, the most excited about it) wouldn’t be there. I’d rather wait a week honestly. I love all of the hosts, but half of what I love about the Besties is how they interact with each other, not guests.

Ryan Y

If you can't get 75% of the materials needed to complete a project, just don't start that project. Sucks to have Hades 2 hyped up then when the time comes you guys upload a completely different certainly-not-the-Besties podcast. He seems nice but I don't know Brendan from a hole in the wall and, frankly, I'd rather listen to nothing at all in the hopes that we'd get a full Hades 2 episode next week. Now, if tradition holds, we'll get a three minute blow off review about Hades 2 before moving on to 45 minutes of being told the latest Catholic coded search action game is a art while Hoops plays Balatro in another window. At the end of the day, we're all adults and it's just a podcast but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed. Love you, boys.

Moss

Listening to Chris and Russ talk about Minishoot’ Adventures sent me on a nostalgia trip recalling a game called Operation: Inner Space. Without doing any googling to confirm this I feel like they both have a similar vibe. Did anyone else play Operation: Inner Space?

Alec Lefeber

Incredibly disappointed in today's episode. Shocked by your decision to discuss Hades II without 3/4 of the crew. I was really looking forward to this episode and now I'm left feeling empty. I hope you rethink this and in the coming weeks you do another episode on Hades II with the full squad. This could have been one of the best episodes of the year and I'm shocked that you decided to waste it like this.

L

Aight Frush a freak

BucklingSwashes

Can't wait for Chris and Russ to start their second spinoff show, The Nasties.

Pman24

I am dying to hear a full segment on Lorelei and the Laser Eyes. Insanely good neo-noir puzzler with strong PS1-era Resident Evil roots (in more ways than one). Except instead of engaging in terrifying combat, you explore and think and solve puzzles. Simogo is a phenomenal indie shop, and I think they smashed this one out of the park.

Moss

Loved the Hades 2 episode, it’s always a treat to hear the perspectives of hosts from other podcasts and I’m deffo going to check out in to the aether. I think I’m also going to wait until the 1.0 release of Hades 2.

Alec Maure

There's an ep of the MST3K reboot that does nearly the entirety of Starcrash, which makes the film more palatable, to be sure.

Fox Butts

I hope you consider checking out more games in Scarlet Maiden's wheelhouse for the show, if only so we can get more of Frush's SFW drawings. For real though, thanks for being good sports about it. It's nice to see you take a game like this on its merits, even if it's obviously a little shocking at first. There is a lot of experimentation going on in the western adult games space right now. Steam opening up to this kind of content has made it more lucrative for devs, many of who also have experience making other games. I've been saying for a while now that eventually, there's going to be an adult game that's capital-G Good enough that it's hard for mainstream gaming press to ignore. Scarlet Maiden might not be that game, but I think it's coming. (Heh.)

Murlocs79

Took your "recommendation" for Scarlet Maiden and ran with it. Completely undisappointed. I love the ease of gameplay but the difficulty of levels, the Dead Cells-like ability to progress your run, and the flat out lewdness of the game. I don't think I've played anything so overt since leisure suit Larry in the land of the lounge lizards back in the early 90s

James Saldivar

What was the tower defense game that chris mentioned at the start of the 2nd segment?

Bishibosh44

Gunna go check out Scarlet Maiden brb. Princess and Conquest is another surprisingly good pixel art booby game. Edit after a couple hours playing: Is it a pretty stripped down roguelike? Yeah but bloat wouldn't be a good idea, especially so in an erotic adventure. It plays well, sounds and looks good, and seeing new naughty animations is as good a dopamine loop as bigger guns/swords. It's light, amusing, and pretty harmless if illogical in its sexuality - obviously reality isn't like this and it's never trying to be more than well-made cheesecake. Plant's blushing response is great. He can't even find the NPR words to describe xD
