Colin Archer

Epona (Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask) Crimson Loftwing (Skyward Sword)

Melissa O'Neil

I second the giant animal pet from black and white, and cerebus in hades, the cat in spiritfarer, scratch or owl bear in bg3, companion cube in portal,

eden

Trico in The Last Guardian 🥰 Although not sure who's whose pet in that scenario

Doctor Worm

Roach from witcher. Fuck that stupid horse but he stood by me nonetheless. The jellyfish from elden ring was also my road dog.

Dakota Sheperd

Does Daxter from Jack and Daxter count? Lol

Justin K

Daffodil the cat in Spiritfarer. Bonus points because he also serves as the second player for drop-in couch co-op.

Patrick Hightower

- Boo the hamster of Minsc from the original Baldur's Gate - Charlie from Marvel's Midnight Suns - Blaze from Diablo III

Collin Voyles

Second vote for Daffodil from Spiritfarer.

Eric Juneau

I don't know why but the cat/dog from Stardew Valley comes to mind right away. I think it's one of the first things you choose, along with your name and farm type. And then you're plopped in the middle of a field and have to discover everything for yourself. Figure out how to plant seeds, how often to water, that crows eat your food, using fertilizer, using tools, how to pay for it all, running out of energy when you do. And yet, the cat is there. It doesn't ask anything of you. You don't have to feed it or water it or maintain it in anywhere. It just sits there, content, watching you. Like it's the spirit of your grandpa, or a guardian sent by him to watch you, making sure everything's all right.

This is maybe not what you’re truly looking for but one that comes to my mind is the hamster in Animal Crossing (an item I believe is in most if not all of the entries). I always thought it was strange to have a hamster villager and then have a small hamster in a cage in my home. What does the villager think when they visit and see that?

ultrapabs

I always loved getting cats into the home ship in Mega Man Legends. Apparently you can have up to 8 of them by the end of the game.

Addison

A couple more: Tar Cat from Death Stranding 2 Saber from Dragon Quest V

Will

Boo the Space Hamster from Baldur's Gate Sir Lora from Divinity 2 Palicos from Monster Hunter Dogmeat from Fallout

RaeTracer

Miniature giant space hamster Boo is my fave. “Go for the eyes Boo! GO FOR THE EYES!”

Keaton Crane

Are we counting mounts? If so then Roach. A more basic answer but well deserved is Dogmeat

Patrick R

I loved Petz (originally Catz and Dogz) for Windows way back in the day. It was Nintendogs about 10 years before Nintendogs. The best part was you could have the animals play right on top of your desktop. Also it had a vibrant modding community. Fond memories of hacking code with a hex editor to cobble together a rainbow-colored Maine Coon.

Ben The DorkKnight

Agro from Shadow of The Colossus, because I'm a sad sad boy.

Galactic Snackin' Grogu

Are we counting little robot buddies or should that be a separate category? Cause my immediate thoughts were the Metal Gear MkII from MGS4 and BD-1 from the Jedi games

Bianca

I think I'm the first to suggest puffles from Club Penguin... where are the real gamers at! /j

Benjamin Bickerstaff

That’s a tough one. First character that comes to mind is Sweet Shalquoir from Dark Souls 2, but she’s not EXACTLY a pet. Noishe from Tales of Symphonia is an interesting case. He’s a large dog-like creature in the game itself, but he’s apparently a unique magical beast that changes form throughout his life cycle. An NPC states that when he takes human form, he prophesied to save the world.

Brendan Little

Palicos from monster hunter but also Grookey

Fredrik Olsson

Boo the miniature giant space hamster from Balfurs gate 2. Cerberus from Hades and Hades 2. Pet from Stardew Valley Arguably also the Weighted Companion Cube from Portal

SakuraMew

I know this won’t be spoken about as y’all aren’t into this franchise, but in Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, the pets on your farm actually help out with getting your livestock out into the pastures, and you can train them to do lil tricks for pet shows!! They earn their way and are adorable whilst they do it :3

Caturday84

I mean…is Yoshi a pet?

Richard Snyder

The horse in Shadow of the Colossus!

Kurtis Gross

The cat from citizen sleeper

spillat

Dog (or cat) in Stardew, Daffodil in Spiritfarer, Senu in AC Origins, Scratch BG3, Palicoes or Palimutes

yaoibunga

my vote is for D-Dog (aka DD) from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Andy Lewis

I’ve always thought the pet functionality in Torchlight 1&2 was brilliant. They can take your excess loot back to town for you and sell it as well as bring back supplies so you don’t have to return to town just to offload garbo loot. Wished more games had something like that.

16-Xray

Urchin in the Coriolis from Ethersea... I mean the Gizka in the Ebon Hawk from Knights of the Old Republic. Also enjoy the cats and dogs in Like a Dragon Ishin. Also any Pokèmon, better than all other pets real and fictional.

Mike Kenney

As a person with dogs named Rush and Treble, it feels like the at least Rush must make the cut. How many other pets turn into jets, water submersibles, trampolines, and wearable armor sets?

Noah

Fave pets…. does this include steeds???

Noah

neopets!!!

Bill Radwong

baby owlbear from Baldur's Gate 3

AJ

I’d argue for BD-1 to be included!

AJ

Also: Poochy from Yoshi’s Island. Otachi from Pikmin 4. Issun from Okami. Roach from Witcher 3.

David Miller

throwing my hat in for Blade Wolf from Metal Gear, a good robot boy

Bryce Cartier

The sidekick in Fortnite because it’s my actual puppy

I Had Something For This

Has anyone mentioned Mausfanger and Son of Mausfanger from Pentiment? Not the player’s pets but I think they should count!

Taylor Kelty

The Chao garden from Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is the right answer.

David and Cory Barrow

The Mabosstiff from Pokémon Scarlett/Violet. That storyline is the only one I cared about. I had to get the fancy ingredients to heal that sweet boy! 😭

Adam Richards

The dog in Kingdom: Two Crowns. You feel like a hero whenever you find and rescue him from being trapped under that log or whatever, and I'm always heartbroken any time the Greed takes him away. 625 pixels of emotional liability.
