Rubato claims to be a throwback platformer, the kind that filled EB Games and Toys "R" Us in the 1990s when up-and-coming developers hoped to capitalize on Mario and Sonic mania. But! Our friends! Be warned!

As the Rubato adventure extends, things get much, much stranger. Rubato is the latest entry in a niche trend of games that have grander ambitions than their Steam pages suggest.

Plus, a bunch of other indie delights, including a mini golf game about climate collapse. For real.

Stuff discussed:

Rubato

Slice and Dice

Lone Fungus: Melody of Spores

Mini Mini Golf Golf

Fishing at the Lake Full of Cats

RTFM

Daredevil Born Again, season 2

I have a years old Star Wars dnd character named Rubato. Also this seems to not be on the rss feed on Apple Podcasts. Might just be one of those things where it’s delayed in its upload or whatever but figured to let y’all know.

I'm so time poor that any amount of friction with games causes me to bounce off them, and the jank of the tongue grappling mechanic on switch was enough for me to put Rubato down in the tutorial. I love the vibe so much, and knowing how short it is now I'll have to give it another go

Dove Men’s soap has a variant with scrubby bits in it called charcoal.

They do the exfoliating with oatmeal in soap bars now, you can get it lol

Hey y'all! Sorry for the technical issue! The episode should now appear in your RSS feeds!

Russ I think what you might be looking for is Swedish Dream Sea Salt soap. Kinda pricey but smells great and it’s exfoliating af.

I think you want a sugar scrub, Russ

so it’s 9 pm PST and weird, i was trying to find this episode since i got the email about it and couldn’t find it anywhere on spotify. i expected it to be in the besties bonus feed? ended up coming to this post and clicking open in spotify and it’s opening under the main besties ad free feed, which i don’t pay extra extra for 😅 happy to get to listen but wanted to let you know!

You already got all the sugar scrub suggestions for body wash. But for face wash, Harry's Exfoliating Facial Cleanser has volcanic rock in it!

Frog Fractions 3? It turns out, no. I played through the demo on switch 2, and I found the platforming too painful to play more… I think. I like artsy games, so I’m a little undecided. I did enjoy photo mode. And car horn mode

Hey Russ, I use a sugar scrub or a crushed coconut shell as an exfoliant that I mix with soap. Works well! Hope this helps lol

Hey Resties, I'd love it if you guys could do a segment on your top 5 games that you can get on itch.io, drawing from your memories of the last couple years. It's a place I'd love to download more games from but I find it pretty overwhelming and weekly coverage can lose some staying power on these smaller indie games. My more recent itch purchase that I have had a great time with was Blippo+!

I swear, every time you guys talk about an indie game that has a big turn or surprise, I expect it to be another Frog Fractions game. Those games broke my brain because I'm constantly on the lookout.

Lush Cosmetics has a ton of bar soaps and body washes that use little scrubby bits that feel so good

I picked Rubato up on a whim, just looking for a "go in with no context" game, which I'll do from time to time (wallet willing). I absolutely adored it. While certainly rough around the edges, I found there was always something to see, laugh at, or well up over. It's a love letter to games, self-expression, and while it does have the 'Capitalism Bad' thing that might feel played out to some, i found the themes were so much more about self-discovery, learning to love yourself, and what it means to be 'you'. That might not be for everyone either, but man, it spoke to me. You are not your job, and while the forces that keep you down may 'win' at the end of the day, you can positively affect those around you so that they won't win forever.

Maybe it's just because I was being a completionist and trying to get all the collectibles whenever they were available, but the "big twist" of Rubato to me seemed super late in the game, like last 10 or 20 percent, not anywhere near halfway
