Dev Update #73: Majora's Mask (Patreon)
Content
Zelda had always known the forest held secrets, but nothing like this. She entered the Lost Woods seeking answers—whispers of an ancient curse had begun circling Hyrule again. The fog was thick, curling like breath from unseen mouths. Each step echoed with music not her own, a lilting flute played far away and yet all around. As she picked flowers a monster gave chase... Then, clouds encircled. No sound, no time, just the hush of being unmoored. When she awoke, her body was light and wrong. Her hands, once delicate and royal, were rough with bark and wrapped in vines. A tattered cloak of green leaves clung to her, and her face—she reached up and touched it—was covered. A mask. She rushed to a pool of still water nearby. The face that stared back was not hers. It was Majora's—wild eyes, and colors that pulsed and shimmered unnaturally. She staggered backward. Around her, small shapes emerged from the trees—figures laughing, skipping, dancing in strange syncopation. Were they Koroks? Skull Kids? And when they spoke, they did not call her Zelda. They called her... Master. Zelda tried to cry out, to cast the mask away, but something within it pulsed—alive, whispering in thoughts not her own. Memories that were not hers flooded her mind: old grief, betrayal, loneliness twisted into madness. Still, beneath it all, the Triforce within her pulsed faintly. Her essence. Her anchor. She had not become Majora. Not yet. The forest wanted a queen. The mask wanted a vessel. And Zelda would have to find her way out—or master it... before it mastered her....
