Along with Doctor Who and Sandman, my all-time favorite show!!! TY!!!! You are in for quite a ride and we will enjoy watching you negotiate the complexities of the title character and the plots! Dr. Strange and Bilbo before they were that! And remember: it's brought to you by Steven Moffat (the showrunner of the Who you are currently watching) and Mark Gattis (a Who writer and the guy who used the machine to turn himself young in DW Season 3!). And yes, I see the TBBT Sheldon similarities!

DSJ.

Before I begin, you've been watching My Mad Fat Diary?????? WHERE IS THAT REACTION????????????

Katerina Katsn

Omg I love that you are starting this show! Sherlock and Doctor Who always went hand in hand for me in terms of quality and entertainment value, which totally makes sense, considering that Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have met on set of DW and discovered that they are both big fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work and then decided to create a series based on it. So technically it’s very probable that without Doctor Who there would be no Sherlock at all. You can also spot a lot of parallels in approach to the storytelling and characters writing going forward. However, the specifics of genre and general direction of the show stops it from being the exact replica of Moffat’s writing for Doctor who in the different setting, so, while spotting some common patterns is fun enough, it does not at all take away from the experience. A lot of plot devices also serve as a nice nod to the original books, which I haven’t read myself, but I’m sure that more educated subscribers of yours will point out. The trivia of this episode that I am aware of is that it is based on the story called “A Study in Scarlet“ (the name of the episode is “Study in Pink”). The original message left by the victim in it was indeed a German word “Rache” (“revenge”), and the police inspector was the one to wrongly assume it would be “Rachel”. Sherlock pointed out it was actually the former, which implied his advantage in knowledge of the multiple foreign languages (wouldn’t really work in our age, when everyone has a google translator on the phone, would it?). So the show somewhat reversed that particular misconception, cleverly adapting it to the modern time situation. Also the phrase “It’s a three-patch problem” spoken by Sherlock using nicotine patches to concentrate is a call back to a "three-pipe problem" from original Sherlock who smoked a pipe :) Overall I’m extremely excited for you to watch this show, it’s soo freaking good! The writing is on point, the comedy is well put, the drama is a *chef’s kiss* and the acting is impeccable. The dynamics between Sherlock and Watson is simply on top, this series wouldn’t be half as good if not for the unmatched chemistry between Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Looking forward to your next reaction and, well, welcome to the game🙃

Yes when I saw Moffat's name i knew I was in for a good time!!! I've been recommended Sandman before (add it to the recommending post if you havent so i dont forget). Oh wow he did play BILBO!!!! i haven't seen LOTR since I saw it at the movies when it came out. I might be due for a rewatch hahaha

Reel Reaction

Haha i watched it years ago! Its my comfort show 🥰🥰

Reel Reaction

I absolutely love that they both met on Doctor Who! It makes me feel like this show won't dissapoint me. Its a nice safety net. I havent read the books either, but I am trying to read more this year so maybe these will be books I pick up.💜 I cant wait for this wonderful journey!!

I never actually watched the full series, only the 'most watched' ones. So looking forward to these reactions! From memory the ones I watched were not as predictable. Also if you like this I think you'd enjoy Luther with Idris Elba as the lead. Probably wouldn't do well kn youtube but well worth checking out in your free time

I don't know if you remember a few weeks back I said that there is something that really bugs me about the first episode. Now you've watched it, I will explain that I thought it annoying that Sherlock is meant to be a genius and sees things no one else does but he didn't even think about the Taxi driver when they chased after and stopped the black cab. You're the third reactor I've seen who has worked out that it's the cab driver way before Sherlock does. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment, and it's only really the first episode where I feel Sherlock should have known a lot quicker.

Max Packer

One thing I absolutely LOVE about this show is the cinematography and the way they show things (like the map of London when they're chasing the cab). The lighting, the colours, the angles of different shots are all very unique to this show. That, and the great humour which is subtle but witty.

Just on the subject of actors and characters: Mycroft Holmes (The Brother): is played by Mark Gatiss who was Dr Lazarus is series three (the doctor who makes himself young again in a machine and then becomes a monster). Mark Gatiss also wrote a handful of Doctor Who episodes as well as wrong for Sherlock. I also noticed when you moved the mouse on your computer, the X-ray listed Mycroft Holmes as "The Archenemy". I'm so glad they did that so it didn't give away the character too soon. DI Lestrade (the main detective) is played by Rupert Graves. In Doctor Who, Dinosaurs on a Shapeship episode (where Amy, Rory, Rory's Dad end up on spaceship with the Egyptian Queen Nefartiti and a game hunter), Rupert Graves plays the game hunter. And you obviously recognised Stephen Moffatt's name. Can't go too wrong with Stephen Moffatt and Mark Gatiss in the writers chairs. *I hope pointing out actors isn't annoying. I just enjoy making the connections when I watch shows.

Max Packer

Apologies for the typing errors. That was meant to say that Mark Gatiss was in series 3 of Doctor Who and was also a writer for some of Doctor Who AND Sherlock.

Reel Reaction

Ahhh yeah I totally see that! It felt like something obvious he should have caught on. Now that tou mention it, it does feel off. Especially after he said that it would be someone who go goes unnoticed and that we trust. Yeah. That one should have been obvious for him.

Reel Reaction

Yes!!! I didnt recognize him! So many actors from the UK were on Doctor Who 🩵 such a long running and popular show. I love seeing in other TV shows/movies. Im rewatching Heroes and Christopher Eccleston popped in there! Haha it was such a nice surprise.

Reel Reaction

Subtle but so good. I love when I do t see something funny coming. I cant wait to notice all the different shots they do on this show. Even the color palette!!

To be fair, this is also the very first book of Sherlock:' A Study in Scarlet' and there it's also the cabbie so I think , for the first episode, to make people acquaintance with the modern version, went with the original case and murderer. But I'm so happy they decided with the other episodes, (expect for the classic ' The Hound of the Baskervilles' ) mix everything up and went a different way.

Max Packer

My issue isn't the cabbie/taxi driver being the murderer, it's them watching intently from the cafe, the very elaborate chase through the streets of London, the opening the door and having a whole conversation with the passenger, and Sherlock STILL doesn't make the connection until the cabbie has basically presented himself to him at his own front door. The cabs and taxis are mentioned throughout 'A study in Scarlet' but never involved in a big moment in the story until the reveal. It makes way more sense in the book.

Max Packer

Yeah. I watched the TV series first before reading any of the books (still making my way through so don't tell me any details of any differences). However, I do love that reading the books still feels fresh because the TV show isn't word-for-word based on the books. Also, some things are twisted (like the whole "Rachel" and "Rache" being flipped) or added into different storylines or in different ways. Very clever.

This was so great to see and you already knew it fast. But I guess you are trained all those years ago during those walks in the park when you got all those riddles thrown upon you. Not everyone guesses it. I'm one of them. Steven and Mark used so much canon characters from the book but updated them in a way I appreciate. The only character that wasn't original was Molly Hooper, cause they just wrote her to let everyone immediately see how social innept Sherlock is. But Louise Brealey did such an excellent job, they decided to keep her in and I love that they did that. You know, when I saw Press Gang (over 30 years ago), written by Steven Moffat, I knew three things: Steven loves Doctor Who, he loves Sherlock and he loves The Princess Bride. It always shows in his writing.

Reel Reaction

Haha i was trainned by yhe master himself! 😆 and Omg the princess bride!!! I havent seen that movie in so long! Im really considering buying the books. I cant wait to see how the tv show adaptation is different.

Reel Reaction

Yeah i think the first one was pretty easy to figure out but they are not going to be all that easy im sure 😝

He was Bilbo in The Hobbit -- a book with excellent riddles if you haven't read it! I didn't love the film adaptations, personally, but the book is a classic I've read several times.
