Ian Smith

To say that this Hitchcock film is 'revered' is to put it mildly - it consistently places in film critics' Top 10 (and was ranked #1 at one point). I can't help feel it's overrated, though. Perhaps it's all the soft-focus photography; or the weepy music score; or the endless close-ups of Stewart and Novak looking overwrought. Nonetheless, Hitchcock's master stroke is to reveal the big Spoiler long before the films ending. This completely changes the films plot direction AND viewer perspective: we now know what it's all about, and we really want Scottie to realize it himself! Vertigo scrapes into my Hitchcock Top Ten, but there are far better imo. Other reaction worthy Hitchcock's that you've not yet seen are North by Northwest; Strangers on a Train; The 39 Steps; The Man who knew too much (1956 version); Frenzy; and To Catch a Thief. This last one is a who-dunnit, which makes a change from all the others, which are suspense thrillers. Whichever Hitchcock's you choose to watch, I'm looking forward to you reacting to them. :)

I dobt know if would make it in my top 10 Hitchcock movie (I have a long way to go still) but visually it is very interesting. I love that the big reveal isn't at the end...that last act like a little sneaky dessert! I cant wait to keep watching!
