Hello everyone!

The BioShock video is well underway and it's actually turned out to be a bear in more ways than one. I forgot just -how much- you need to do on PC to get the thing in a good spot for playing it smoothly, and also just how rough the "remaster" for it was that came out a few years earlier. I'm actually not sure how the remaster is seen nowadays since it's also over a decade old now, but having worse visuals and sound while somehow also being more unstable wasn't in my cards to the point it would actually need more tweaking to get it into a better spot. Most annoyingly of all some basic issues like the mouse controls still being scuffed even though they were fixed in BioShock 2 which -also- was remastered in the same pack. So I wasn't really going into it approaching it as a remaster comparison thing (it would still be for the set-up mainly) but I ended up finding a lot more to talk about here than I thought. Regardless it's likely I'll just pause the charge for this month if it ends up not being in a spot I'm happy with over next weekend, but it's still up in the air so we'll see! Otherwise nothing crazy going on there.

Otherwise the Water Womb World video gave me a lot of great insight, because a lot of people actually did stop watching in about the first minute to go check out the game when I recommended doing that which was pretty cool to see the effects of. It got a lot of reviews and more attention on Steam which should be great for giving Yames more visibility there compared to the attention his games got just through Let's Plays. As a video though it felt weirdly tricky to edit since I was both trying to make it something worthy of being a good video, but also not outstaying its runtime especially when the game is so short. At times it felt like something that would be easier to make if it was targeted to people who had actually played the game, compared to reviewing what was there to people with both fresh eyes and who had played it. There were a lot of people leaving other micro/very short game recommends though, which I think has given me more push of an idea to run by the benefactor board here.

Patreon has added a lot of tools like group chats, a community board (there was an old one Patreon just auto-shut down and I have to enable the new version I think?), some kind of live streaming thing built in, and most recently something like a quasi-Twitter I don't understand, but it's much more robust than it was first starting this years back. So I'm thinking it might be fun to -actually- have something like a gaming "book club" for all of you here. Basically it'd operate similar to the regular videos but with a few different aspects:

The games are short. We're talking maximum 2 hours at its lengthiest but ideally under an hour. They're also free or cheap, at most ten USD but ideally under five especially if there's region fuckery. Think something like Water Womb World/Paratopic. A lot of games I really love end up having shorter videos ala Cryptmaster or Northern Journey but those are definitely not short games. I had quite a few short game recommends, so a poll will vote on what it'll be from some options at the beginning of a month. This would be available to everyone at the lowest tier, so I'm not trying to upsell anyone who got here for posts into anything fancier.

There's a video! Ideally it's something I have edited in less than a day or so and it's under ten minutes of run time. It gets posted to the community board (?) where people can basically use the post as a discussion/thread about the game. This might also be a good place for people to post their own recommends separate from the regular game list, though there's quite a few titles like that on there to pick out from. I still need to learn more about the features here to get a full sense of it because the interface has changed so much.

If the length of a video -does- spin out of control into something crazy longer, it becomes a regular channel upload, but would still go on the club board. Otherwise once a year there'll basically be an upload with the shorter game videos combined for the public. It might also be easy to fold in any updates or developments that happened with game in there that had news in the meanwhile. I think it's important that people who aren't paying still get videos, this is just a little more "community oriented" in a way that might be weird on YouTube to have. At least when it comes to expectations for a general audience having played a weird small game to a few hundred thousand people or seen as "watering things down" if they get especially short, so saving them for a combined upload of smaller games makes sense to me. That's not to say the edit would completely assume you've played the game and just give 0 background at all, but it might just give me more edit wiggle room if I'm not as worried about missing some minutia.

The gaming book club will aim to be once a month, but there will be times it's either delayed or people just post things to each other for a period. A good example would be something like the Total War Warhammer 3: Immortal Empires video getting into full swing, a long RPG, holidays, etc. Basically if I was already in a tight period, or something that would lead to a slower upload actively disruptive compared to playing a game, outlining some notes and then sleeping on it and getting an edit done the next day.

In short I greatly appreciate everyone who has contributed over the years and I've been trying to figure out a way to "give back" more in a way that's not pay walling communication, or videos people have been clamoring for, or anything else that starts leading into me working on videos for a council of barons instead of the general public. I think this could strike a good balance, and also be helpful on my own end for being able to break out of any writer's block or game tunnel vision by having some "book club homework" and it could end up being a lot of fun to play smaller games with less dread of the sheer amount of people it'd be blasted out to that could be let down by the nature of the game where it'd make more sense to be in a collection video of them. The "short game collection video" has been something a lot of people have asked about over the years and I've always answered I wasn't sure of a way I could make that work, and I feel that this could be it since it has you all deciding what they are in the first place and then bundling them together later.

I thought of doing this as a simple poll whether to investigate this or not, but this actually might be a good test run of how many people actually use Patreon for commenting or interaction in the first place beyond the video credits questions which are the most active for obvious reasons. Patreon does seem gunning to make it some kind of social platform (which seems bizarre to me) but while I'll be ignoring a lot of the things they've added there and I assume most of you do as well, they have built a lot that could make this possible and low maintenance. If this did get going it wouldn't be until July most likely since BioShock is in such a twilight zone of where things will go with my schedule, so there should be plenty of time to read through things I might not be considering or other reasons it could be a good idea.

Anyways I won't ramble any more, but that's all for now. Let me know what you think, and thank you as always for your support!

That would be sick. Thanks for being the best vidya game YouTuber, Mandy.

Bigman Johnson

I replayed Bioshock 1 and 2 a few years ago and I HAD to play the original versions because the remaster was so botched.

Matthew Morel

Please! I would ADORE a short games book club. I was actually just recently thinking about this, and wondering if there were something like it. I think it’s a great idea

Joshua Crager

I would love to do a gaming book club. Just sad as I would recommend Sir Kicks a lot as a possible entry but it takes like 6 hours to beat and costs 10 dollars. Very Dark Messiah as it is all about improvising solutions with tools you have at hand.

Critterfreak

I think a gaming book club is a great idea. I also think a good idea would be almost doing a 3 month catch up video that goes over the last 3 months of "book club" games.

Drad

As someone who has been running a media book club myself I think the idea could be a lot of fun especially since you tend to make videos on games I haven’t heard of or played before so it’ll be fun trying out new games.

Genevieve Jones

As a big fan of the Lorebeards Warhammer book club, I definitely wouldn’t mind another fun thing to get me trying new media and giving me a place to discuss it! I’d say go for it

Media Detective

I love the idea. Even for longer games you’re the reason I checked out Stasis Bone Totem and The Sinking City. It’s also kinda funny the last time that I remember you mentioning a “game book club” was the Paratopic video and that game’s getting a big remaster/sequel at some point.

Lucas

i am already at a point of choice paralysis and really dont need more games on my list of 'might wanna play that at some point' i am also, usually, just a lurker and dont feel like i have much to contribute, so i probably wouldnt engage with it or, even if i followed along, you wouldnt hear from me much. not saying i hate it, but not passionate about it either

yaboyrobin

I would be very interested in gaming book club! Maybe I wouldn't play the game every time, but it'd be cool!

Kurahen

I would be up to see something that would otherwise "litter" main channel, don't push yourself to make it every month

Sophie

Sounds fun and I'd be interested in participating. Been trying to play more short games like that recently. One I particularly enjoyed recently was Metal Garden.

BRAYDEN WORRELL

The idea of gaming book club sounds interesting, and I would be willing to join in.

Sothoth n'gha kadishtuor hrii

I'd definitely be down for the gaming book club idea, not something I've ever experienced before so I'd love to be able to see how it works and contribute.

SlyGuy7_

I think it sounds fun. I’d love to participate if I can get over being a scaredy cat/find time.

Nomads-of-Korsun

I don't mind waiting for the longer, more in depth videos. But that's mostly because I often re-watch your old videos when I'm on trips. Regardless of what you do, keep up the great work.

Eric

If we’re aiming for short but interesting than I’d be down

OrangeJuiceEnergy

Gaming book club sounds neat. I'm definitely always on the lookout for short, cheap games now that I no longer have the time for 70hr open world games.

dogman

I usually don't leave a comment because I don't think it's a subject I could add more on/don't feel the need to, but a game club option sounds great to get a smaller community to talk about their shared experiences with a game

DiffDoff

I'd be super down to join the gaming book club, seems like it'd be a ton of fun, and it's always nice to discuss these things with other people.

ALittleBitKushy

Been so burnt out from playing longer games recently that a book club for shorter games sounds like a blast. Could be a fun excuse to tackle some of David Szymanski's non dusk projects like squirrel stapler, butchers creek, and that other one that involves a submarine.

ArkSeaside

The book club idea is absolutely worth giving a test run at the very least, I did the "check out at the warning and play the game" thing in WWW and enjoyed it greatly. First game that comes to mind in recommendations for this sort of thing is Gravity Bone, which is free and short and memorable

IShallRiseAgain

I just wonder how many good cheap/free games that are 2 hours or less outside of the horror/adventure game genres.

Zak K

I'd be up to experiment with this :)

Fritzguyes

Patreon trying to become a social media platform actually makes perfect sense. Not in a good way necessarily, but users are able to interact more readily with a creator's fanbase, and Patreon is able to paywall community interaction. Which is precisly what people already do with Discord access for example, so I guess Patreon wants to capture that market into their own platform.

Arkennys

Sounds awesome :3

Klobas

That sounds like a great idea. I'll be a welcome change of pace from the usual long games I'm playing

Pentbot

For the purposes of engagement, and judging metrics, I am commenting that I have read this post. I quite like the idea of a game(book) club - I know personally I'm not adverse to playing games that are a bit longer, maybe like 3-5 hours (way I see it, is that is still way less time than I would reading a book)

C2

I'd be wary about adding more regular commitments. Once a month sounds reasonable but these things can spiral. I'd be tempted to start it slow as a seasonal thing, 4 times a year, and if it's working out without being too much of a resource sink you could ramp up from there.

Drake

I think this idea would be a lot of fun.

Mar Sadeh

Hell yes! This idea sounds like a ton of fun. Regarding some other short game ideas: - Fingerbones - Iron Lung - Uriel's Chasm This last one in particular I'd like to see covered, and get a bit more attention. It's "Mostly Negative" on Steam. It's not fun to play and its purpose is unclear, to say the least... But I actually, unironically, really like it. It turns its objectively-bad-ness into part of the horror, and it's really fascinating. I should really play its sequels one of these days.

Fluffy Beaver

I dont have enough time to contribute to any club, but I will be interested in the discussions, writings, and video results.

Temky

I like the idea, even if I wouldn't know what makes a good game for the format.

Fearmeister

I like the book club idea. Sounds like a great excuse to finally review the BanBan games!

Tomthechosen1

It's funny I was thinking of doing a Retrospective on Bioshock and dropped it for the very reason that it's such a pain to get running well. Instead I did Empire At War which the fellas seemed to enjoy. As for the gaming book club it seems like a great idea! I especially enjoy the idea of just something smaller and lighter to get our noggin joggin and potentially make us all come together a lil bit more than these credit questions.

FugginSchway

Short game book club sounds like a hoot. I don't have time to play longer games these days but I could find the time to play a short one every month or so.

Griffoh

Cool idea

Davyd Miller

I do really like the idea of a gaming book club. Although I have a bit of a hard time looking for shorter games since those tend to fall into the roguelike category for me. The prequel/pitch for In Stars and Time was sort of an interesting idea but I don't know if it's shorter than two hours

uhhh_ben

I got an email notification about this post and upgraded my membership just to be able to say that I think it’s a great idea and I would enjoy participating.

Zacharyyyyyyy

I definitely would participate in a book club like that, especially if it included experimental or game jam content.

The Western Fountain

I would like to see more short form games like Water Womb World or Cryptmaster if only because I have no idea where you find them and they are great introductions for me.

LB

Considering I was planning a replay of the Bioshock games soon, your warning regarding the state of the remasters was incredibly timely. It's such a shame that games like this become abandonware, essentially, and are left to rot by publishers who want to do nothing with the IP other than keep it so no one else can have it. Let's pretend I posted a picture of the CEO from the Gwimbly Smiling Friends episode to go with this.
